Asher and Saitama stepped into the room, their eyes falling on Acker Holloway, who sat in silence, cultivating non-stop.
’Was this guy always this hardworking?’ Asher couldn’t help but think to himself. He guessed that Acker had probably been cultivating since morning.
After a moment, Asher shook his head and made no comments, nor did he disturb Acker. Geniuses like him and Acker didn’t reach their level by sleeping too much or being lazy. Acker being this hardworking meant he had possessed this habit from the very beginning.
Saitama climbed onto his bed and immediately dozed off without a care for whether others out-trained him or not, as though he understood his own genius and power better than everybody else.
Asher stared at the empty bunk above Saitama for a moment before climbing onto his own bed to sleep. However, before he could shut his eyes, Acker’s voice came from below.
"A man named Cadet Parker came to find you," he stated without stopping his cultivation.
Before Asher could ask what the man wanted, as he was indeed curious, Acker continued.
"He asked me to pass along a message," Acker stated. "Your roommate, or rather, our roommate, died yesterday." His tone was slightly pained as he remained in cultivation, tears beginning to fall from his eyes.
"Another man lost to the Sins of the World... Amitabha," Acker stated in finality as he stopped cultivating for a moment and said a short prayer. "I hope Buddha accepts and guides his soul," he added.
Asher remained motionless on his bed as he stared at the ceiling. He didn’t ask what had killed the man, as he knew that if Cadet Parker had said anything, Acker would have mentioned it. It was funny, or rather, ironic, how he had visited the Memorial Wall that very day, only for his own roommate to die during a deployment—a man he had never even met.
Saitama, who had his back turned towards both Asher and Acker, released a heavy sigh, as though the news had affected him in some way. But if it had, nobody knew, as he didn’t say anything.
’I’m guessing we won’t be getting a new roommate until a new round of Cadets is introduced,’ Asher thought to himself. He was sure that if Corporal Gideon had been aware of the man’s death from the beginning, he would have assigned four people to this room instead of three.
’Another name on the Memorial Wall,’ he thought in finality as the Dream Realm consumed his consciousness.
The next moment, the alarm buzzed for breakfast, but none of the three moved, as they remained asleep without bothering about breakfast.
When the time reached 7 a.m., Asher rose from his sleep. As he woke up, Astra Energy coursed through his body. Although he loved bathing, there was no way he was going to share the bathroom with a bunch of people.
As he was about to begin his daily cultivation, a knock echoed through the room. Asher didn’t need to guess who it was, as he had sensed Raul’s presence the moment he woke up. Saitama opened the door, allowing the man to walk in.
Raul simply greeted them and immediately distributed the weapons and breastplates without engaging in any lengthy conversations. He also informed them that whenever their weapons became damaged or anything of the sort happened, they could request a repair or replacement, and it would be completed before their next deployment.
With that, the man turned and walked away. Neither Asher nor Acker glanced at their weapons or breastplates, as they vanished into their respective space rings. As for Saitama, he simply put on his dark green glove with a smile on his face. The only part of his body exposed at that moment was from the neck upwards.
An hour passed as Asher and Acker returned to cultivation, while Saitama delved into his usual sleep.
The door suddenly snapped open without a knock, causing the three to glance in the direction of the intruder. The intruder was none other than Corporal Gideon.
"Cadet Asher, Cadet Saitama, Cadet Acker, leave for your first assignment," he stated flatly, then threw an orb into the air that exploded with a soft bang.
At the bang, a sort of Google Maps-like direction opened across the floor before them, pointing them towards the exit. Corporal Gideon didn’t say anything else. The moment he threw the orb, he was gone before it exploded, as he had other Cadets to inform of their assignments.
Asher and the others didn’t hesitate to move. They followed the golden line on the ground until they arrived outside, where they saw other Cadets whose lines branched off in different directions. Asher saw his own line split into three, with names written on each path. Following the one with his name, he moved in that direction as the line began to fade.
Within minutes, he arrived at another part of the Algorith Frontier. There, he saw four Cadets and a Corporal already waiting for him. He was the last one to arrive, as always.
As Asher joined them, the Corporal began to speak.
"Now that you are all here, we shall begin," the Corporal spoke, her tone almost sweet to the ears. "I am Corporal Sonya, and I will be leading this assignment, which is basically meant to show you one of the things Cadets do," she stated as she stood straight, a spear hanging perfectly on her back.
"But before then," she continued, "I will be giving you a few items and explaining their functions." She walked towards them and immediately began, as though she had no time to waste.
’Another round of items? I wonder what it is this time,’ Asher thought to himself.
As for the other four Cadets, he recognized them, as he had seen them two days ago in the classroom where Lieutenant Chioma had taught.
"I will be giving you two items. The first is the Emergency Pulse Bead," she stated as she took out what resembled a bead and passed one to each of the five Cadets. "When crushed, these beads release a unique pulse that reaches the Frontier, regardless of where you are, and automatically broadcasts your current location," she explained. "They are only to be used in the event that you encounter an End-Class Monster, a Void-Class Monster, or a Rank 9 or Rank 10 Emovira."
Asher stared at the bead for a moment before transferring it to his system inventory. He understood how smart and practical it was to distribute these Emergency Pulse Beads to everyone. After all, encountering beings of such caliber and scale wasn’t reserved for only the strong. Even a random Cadet could encounter a Rank 10 Emovira.
Although Corporal Sonya didn’t say it, Asher already guessed that the pulse from the bead, which activated the alarms within the Frontier, was undetectable.
"The last is the Life-Saving Orb," she stated before passing two green orbs to each person.
"The Life-Saving Orb does exactly what its name suggests: it saves your life by teleporting you back to the Frontier when you inject your Astra Energy into it," she explained calmly. "Know that you only get two per year, whether you use them or not. So, be smart when using them, but don’t hesitate to use them when necessary," she stated.
