Chapter 1271: Scars Of War 2 [Super Gift Bonus Chapter ]

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Asher sat on the ground like a defeated man without any direction in life. He was consumed by his thoughts as various emotions coursed through his veins, leaving him unable to find peace within himself.

He hadn’t been able to say anything to the woman. What could he possibly say? That it would be okay? That everything would be fine? That she should curse the Velkarin Empire?

While he empathised with the woman and understood her pain, he could never truly comprehend the suffering she felt, as he had never personally experienced such a loss.

In his past life, he had neither parents nor grandparents, as he had been an orphan, so he had never experienced the kind of loss others suffered when even a single parent died.

Even Jennifer, whom he had loved since they met, hadn’t died. She had been perfectly fine, and he had been the one whisked away to this world.

Although these thoughts crossed his mind, he had no desire to experience a loss merely to understand what the soldiers here were feeling.

For him to experience such a loss would mean a loved one dying, and nobody wished for a loved one to die.

’This is all my fault.’

He told himself as he remained on the ground. Various maybes filled his mind, and countless what-ifs echoed within his skull. Maybe if he had done this, or if he had done that, then everything wouldn’t have turned out this way.

Lyra’s figure appeared gracefully behind him. Her eyes were filled with heaviness, as she felt somewhat sorrowful that her Young Master was going through this pain alone.

"Young Master..."

She began to speak, her tone calm and gentle. Even if Asher hadn’t called out to her or asked her to speak, it didn’t mean she wouldn’t offer him some words of comfort.

"It isn’t your fault, Young Master. In a world like ours, it’s impossible to save everyone. Not even the Primarch, who is considered one of the strongest people alive and among the strongest to have ever existed, can save everyone."

Her tone was comforting as she lowered herself beside him, sitting on the shattered earth while staring into the same distance as her Young Master.

"This is simply how war works. There is bloodshed, there is death, there is pain, there is sorrow, and there is guilt. If people from both sides don’t die during wars, then it can never truly be called a war, Young Master."

She stated, her words containing nothing but unblemished truth.

Could there really be a war in which nobody actually died? Could such a thing even be called a war?

"All I can say is that no matter which route you could have chosen, Young Master, people were still destined to die today, regardless of what you did."

Lyra continued calmly, her hair dancing in the breeze that carried the stench of blood and death.

Her words were the truth. No matter which option Asher had chosen, millions were still going to die regardless. The moment those bombs had been planted across various Frontiers and Outposts, having zero casualties had become an unrealistic expectation, little more than a delusion.

Asher remained silent, neither saying anything nor interrupting Lyra as she spoke. While he blamed himself for the losses, his brain, which almost always operated on logic and reason, still forced him to acknowledge the truth in Lyra’s words.

’Even Father can’t save everyone.’

The thought echoed in Asher’s mind. Although those words were true, to him, they still felt like nothing more than a lame excuse.

"Thank you, Lyra."

He finally spoke. His mood hadn’t improved one bit, but he still thanked Lyra for her words of comfort.

"You’re welcome, Young Master."

Lyra replied, her body turning into smoke as she vanished from her position beside him, returning to her guard duty.

’Is it possible to change Fate and Destiny?’

Asher thought to himself.

Lyra had said that no matter what choice he had made, people were still destined to die that day. If Fate and Destiny had predetermined everything, then what was the point of trying? What was the point of doing anything at all?

The answer to Asher’s question was a resounding YES.

It was indeed possible to change Fate and Destiny. The greatest proof of this was Threshold I, who had faced Azaron almost a year ago. She had been destined to die that day, but through an epiphany during the battle, just before the moment of her death, she had managed to alter her Fate ever so slightly and survive.

However, this had been the result of her own ridiculous Freedom ability.

Whether Asher could one day acquire such an ability or create a powerful skill capable of changing Fate or Destiny remained unknown. He was simply too far from that level of power, as he was still an overpowered ant in the grand scheme of things.

’I can only grow stronger.’

He thought to himself as he closed his eyes.

Although he felt guilty at that moment, he had never made it his mission to become some sort of hero who would save the world from pain and death.

But just because he wasn’t a hero didn’t mean he would sit back and feel nothing when people died, nor did it mean he wouldn’t act if the Empire or the world ever needed his strength.

As Asher was lost in thought, a commotion erupted a kilometre away. His attention snapped in that direction, breaking him out of his thoughts.

"DIE!!!" "DIE!!!" "DIE!!!" "DIE!!!"

One man screamed at the top of his lungs as he stabbed a Velkarin soldier over and over like a madman, continuing even after the soldier had already died. As if suddenly coming back to his senses, his head snapped towards another chained Velkarin soldier.

The moment their eyes met, the soldier flinched, and before he could react, the man had already closed the distance and stabbed him in the throat.

The Velkarin soldier fell backwards with shock in his eyes, while the madman collapsed on top of him.

"YOU BASTARDS TOOK MY DAUGHTER FROM ME!!!"

"YOU DON’T DESERVE TO LIVE!!!"

"YOU DON’T DESERVE TO BE PRISONERS OF WAR!!!"

He shouted as he stabbed repeatedly and frantically, his movements driven by the overwhelming grief and fury consuming him.

Nobody rushed to stop him. Every soldier had suffered a loss one way or another, so why should they help the people who had invaded their land and brought such devastation upon them?

Thus, they simply watched.

However, as the man continued his rampage, a higher-ranking soldier finally intervened. She appeared in a blur and slapped the man across the cheek, the impact sending him flying backwards. His body slammed against the ground and ricocheted several times before he finally slid to a stop on his side.

"We’ve all lost someone today, Soldier. Don’t let the guilt consume you and twist you into something you aren’t."

The General-ranked woman spoke in a heavy tone as she stared at the soldier she had slapped. The man slowly shifted into a kneeling position. She sighed before vanishing from where she stood, as there were simply too many things to handle at that moment.

The soldier rose shakily to his feet, his eyes red and his teeth grinding against one another. His expression reflected not only his anger over the loss of his daughter but also the unbearable guilt that accompanied it.

His daughter had begged him to let her join the Frontier for years, but he had repeatedly rejected her requests until he finally agreed. Now, barely six months after joining, she had died at the hands of war.
