Da Sha’s father was a prominent man in the village. Did he lack the means to treat his own son’s injury or was he reluctant in his choosing?
“How many days have you been here?” Shen Lang asked worriedly.
Da Sha, tried-and-true, raised his finger but the attempt was futile, muscles too weak to move around. He resembled nothing like the strong youth Shen Lang once knew.
“One hand is not enough to count…” Da Sha smiled crookedly, a cockiron certainty of sadness written in the pools of his eyes.
To say nothing of the least, he was left here, in the ditch, alone to rot for well over six days. God knows he has not eaten or drank liquid ‘cept the rainfall, if ever it came.
Bleeding a river of red, Da Sha had no food, no water, nothing. He would have died in this sorry and pitiful state had Shen Lang not found him.
Shen Lang bent his body, touched Da Sha’s several wounded visceras: cracked ribs, damaged liver, deep cuts inside the stomach, and fractured lungs — all were heavy case of internal injuries. True, the inflicted injuries were genuinely severe to treat, but surely he would have been saved had the father spent the necessary amount to treat him, but he did not.
He left his son here to rot and die.
Fortunately, the broken ribs did not penetrate through the organs else his death would be looming over imminently.
The true reason Da Sha neared the troughs of death was simply put, he went through day and night without food. Given the conditions of his body, he incurred a sudden high fever and grew weaker each and every day.
“Shen Lang, I’m going to die,” Da Sha smiled dismally. “I was afraid of what would happen to you, but it looks like you’ll be okay.”
Following, Da Sha closed his eyes and breathed weakly. He was attached to worldly life, had many dreams in life, but yet, he was not afraid of death, just a little sad in his heart.
“No, you won’t die. Not today, not like this. I’ll save you. I’ll take you away.” Shen Lang muttered.
Then he pulled out a slice of ginseng and placed it through Da Sha’s dry, cracked, and peeling lips.
For what reason did Shen Lang choose to bring ginseng? Because he thought himself that if ever he found himself in a precarious situation, he’d at least have some herbal plants to relieve the pain.
Shen Lang looked at Da Sha’s glassy eyes, one that held no desire of living.
There truly is no greater sorrow than death.
From the moment he was abandoned, he no longer desired to live. Though he was neglected, abused, thrown away from beginning of birth ‘till now… though he never had enough food to eat, his father’s voice directed towards him always cold… Da Sha firmly believed his father loved him so, just not good at expressing himself.
And he really did eat too much.
Though he was hungry each and every day, he held himself back and had no more than two bowls of corn rice per meal. He toiled and worked laboriously. All he wished for was the acknowledgement of his father.
But he finally realized… his father never loved him. He almost died saving his little half-brother and yet… his father was unwilling to loosen out the money from his pocket to treat his injuries. Rather, he abandoned him in the ditch to die.
And death? He was no longer afraid of it.
“Silly fool…” Shen Lang slapped Da Sha’s face and shouted, “Da Sha, I’ve been bullied! Please help me!”
Like a conditioned reflex, Da Sha’s eyes suddenly opened and extended his arms to shield Shen Lang from all harms.
“Da Sha, you can’t die like this. You have to make them regret! Let your father see how good you are and make them regret their actions, right?”
Da Sha remained silent for a while, pondering shortly, before nodding his head vigorously. “Yes… I want father to know that I am useful. I want to support him when he’s old,” he said with cockiron certainty. “I can’t die. I have to support father. My little brother is too naughty. He certainly won’t care to support father when he grows up.”
His thoughts to support his father in the future left Shen Lang speechless.
“Put him in the carriage,” Shen Lang ordered.
The two knights stood upright pale in shock but quickly recovered from the trance. “Yes!”
They quickly carried Da Sha into the carriage.
