Bai Qingyan left the house around six o’clock. She didn’t want to be late in meeting her uncle. They had agreed to have dinner together and chat.
Once she arrived at the appointed place, she stood on the other side of the street. From there, Bai Qingyan could see her uncle and, as soon as she recognized his face her eyes filled with tears.
Bai Jian stood under a camphor tree wearing a beige casual shirt, paired with black pants and shoes. A modest, straightforward appearance just like she remembered. He was a good-hearted person and didn’t have the habit of dressing-up.
Bai Qingyan quickly crossed the street and ran towards him.
Bai Jian noticed Bai Qingyan was running across the street toward him and cautioned her, “Yan Yan, be careful!”
In her rush, Bai Qingyan did not notice there was a car heading straight for her at high speeds. After hearing her uncle’s shout, she tried returning to the sidewalk but only managed to take two steps back and fall on the ground.
“Creek!”
The black car made an abrupt stop but managed to avoid hitting her. The driver lowered the window and shouted at her with a furious expression, “Watch where you’re going! I almost ran you over! Are you tired of living?!”
“Yan Yan… ” Bai Jian immediately ran over to assist his niece, apologizing to the driver as he helped her stand up. Bai Qingyan, still in shock, held onto his arms and nuzzled her face on his chest. “Uncle…”
A woman suddenly poked her head out of the car and exclaimed, surprised, “I can’t believe it’s her! What a coincidence!” After her comment, the driver pulled away and left.
Bai Jian stared at Bai Qingyan, concern written all over his face. He patted her head gently, trying to soothe her. “Yan Yan, don’t be afraid. It’s okay. Did you get injured anywhere?”
Bai Qingyan stared at her father figure with reddened eyes. She shook her head and said, “I’m fine.”
Bai Jian gave his niece a long look. She was remarkably similar to his deceased sister. Every time he looked at Bai Qingyan, it was as if he was looking at his younger sister.
As time passed Bai Qingyan resembled her mother more and more. Now, as a grown-up, their appearances were practically identical.
“Uncle, let’s go eat steak!” Bai Qingyan urged him while clutching his arm.
“No, that’s too expensive! Uncle will take you to the big stall.” He replied, shaking his head.
Bai Jian was used to living frugally. He was the sole financial source in the Bai Family. Even after being a singer for so long, Bai Xiaojin still begged Bai Jian for money every now and then.
But Bai Qingyan wasn’t going to allow him to refuse. Gu Yezhi had given her a card, and she was sure it had a lot of money in it.
“It’s not that expensive! My husband is very wealthy, remember?” She wiggled her eyebrows smugly.
Her uncle put up one last effort before giving up. “You… You have to save money; it doesn’t grow on trees.”
“I know, Uncle!”
As a result, they went to the best restaurant in Wei City. Just as they reached the door, Bai Qingyan’s phone rang. It was Gu Yezhi calling. She suddenly remembered she forgot to let him know she was going out for dinner with her uncle!
“Uncle, go ahead and get us a table. I’ve got to take this call, it’s my husband.” She gestured to him with the phone. Seeing Bai Jian nod, she walked away, seeking a secluded spot.
“Hello, Yezhi.”
“Yan Yan, are you at home?
