Volume 3 Chapter 1: Departure

This chapter is updated by NovelFree.ml

As the summer holidays approached, Cain was summoned to the royal castle one day.

He was guided to the usual reception room, and spent a little time waiting there while enjoying both some black tea that had been prepared for him, as well as its refined fragrance.

It wasn’t long before the king, Duke Eric, and Prime Minister Magna all stepped into the room. Cain made to stand up, but the king stopped him with a wave of his hand.

“We kept you waiting, Cain, so it’s fine if you stay sitting down.”

With that, the king sat down in his usual seat in the very middle, with Eric and Magna sitting down on either side of him.

“It’s about the Saint-sama, who we talked about previously. We’ve been told when she’ll be heading here, so I’d like you to be in the town of Silbesta, which is near our border with the Holy Country of Marineford, before she gets there, to be there to greet her properly. I’ll let Magna explain the details to you.”

Cain nodded at the brief explanation, after which Magna started telling him the details.

The town of Silbesta was five days south-east of the royal capital by carriage1, and the lord there was Count Ragnaf von Ruuvest Silbesta. As the town was close to the Holy Country, there were many enthusiastic believers there, and the area was so famous for its wine, it even exported it to other countries.

It turned out even the wine Cain had bought for his announcement party in the royal capital had come from Silbesta. Although of course, that didn’t really mean anything to Cain, as he was still underage, and thus couldn’t drink alcohol.

“So, she will be arriving in Silbesta ten days after the summer holidays here have started. So I want you to be there before that, and maybe get everything ready alongside Ragnaf. But, well…”

Magna glanced at the king as if the next word were a little hard for him to say. Feeling that glance, the king stepped in to help him out.

“Ragnaf, well… he’s quite the fanatic Marinefordean. He might go a little overboard, so I’d like you to apply the brakes on him. He’s by no means a bad guy, but still…”

The king explained with a face as if he had just swallowed something sour.

For zealous believers, a Saint was the very definition of a messenger of the gods, meaning that talking back to her would be synonymous with opposing the gods themselves.

While having this strange premonition that he would be caught up in something troublesome again, Cain listened to what they had to say.

“And then, even if you try to stop him, it might not even work, as he’s a count, while you’re a viscount. So I’ll give you This.”

What the king laid down on the table was a noble’s proof of status, made with platinum. It was clearly more extravagant than Cain’s proof that he was a viscount. However, the coat of arms on this proof was the same as that on the Esfort Kingdom’s flag. Indeed, it was proof of belonging to the royal family.

“This is the proof that members of the royal family carry. Or, in certain cases, it is also given to people representing the royal family. I want you to carry out your role as a representative of the royal family. Like this, even if Ragnaf were to go out of control, you should be able to stop him… I hope…”

“This proof, wouldn’t it be better for Lady Silk to have it…”

As the Saint was a girl, naturally, Silk would be around her way more. Cain thought that if Silk had all the authority that came with the document, he would be able to dedicate himself to his bodyguard duties.

“Not happening. Only heads of noble families can carry this proof around with them. Simple members of a noble’s family should not be given that amount of authority.”

The king rejected Cain’s idea. After all, while members of a noble family were treated as nobles, technically they were actually only semi-nobles, possessing nowhere near the authority the head of their family had. So there was no way they would ever be allowed to possess a proof of being a member of the royal family.

“– – understood. Then, I shall make sure to keep it safe.”

Cain took the proof of being a member of the royal family from the table and stored it away in his [Item Box].

“I’m counting on you, Cain.”

Leaving these words hanging in the air, the three of them left the room. Left alone in the reception room, Cain looked out at the sky.

“I hope nothing bad will happen…”

Then, it was the day before the summer holidays started. From the next day onwards, it would be the summer holidays, meaning a break from school for two months. Then, it would be time for Cain to head to Silbesta with Silk in order to greet the Saint.

“Cain-sama and Silk on a trip alone, just the two of them…”

When they met Telestia in the classroom on the last day of school, she was in a bad mood. The reason for that being, of course, that Cain and Silk would be going to greet the Saint together.

She had begged the king countless times for her to be allowed to tag along, but as there was obviously no way they could send a princess off like that, the king had not given his approval.

“Uhuhu, it’ll be fine. We’ll be back soon enough. Teles, you wait for us in the royal castle!”

Said Silk, who was in a good mood, completely unlike Telestia.

Seeing Silk’s huge smile, Telestia’s mood worsened even further.

“It’s not a trip, though? It’s work as a noble! We’ll come back here soon after meeting up with her, okay? If I find anything that seems like it would be a nice gift, I’ll buy it for you too!”

Cain eventually managed to persuade her. Hearing that she might get a gift, Telestia’s expression gradually improved.

“Cain-sama, it’s a promise, okay? Don’t forget it.”

Cain nodded countless times at Telestia’s words.

◇◇◇◇

It was the first day of the summer holidays. There were a number of carriages standing in front of the royal castle, as many servants and knights to guard everyone would be going along with Cain and Silk.

Cain didn’t have any exclusive knights to be his bodyguards yet, as they would be dispatched from the royal knights once he had met the Saint.

As all of Cain’s luggage was stored away in his [Item Box], he spent the remaining time on the terrace, sipping some black tea that a maid had brewed for him.

Telestia was sitting next to him, there to see him off.

“I’ll be lonely, not being able to see Cain-sama for a while…”

While the two of them chatted on, a carriage bearing the coat of arms of the duke arrived in front of the royal castle. Silk, wrapped in a travelling outfit, got down from the carriage.

“Cain-kun, sorry to have kept you waiting! It seems like it’ll be a little longer before everyone’s ready. Could I have some tea as well, please.”

Sitting down opposite Cain, Silk looked at the maid standing next to her, who wordlessly began preparing some more black tea.

“I really wanted to go too… I envy you, Silk…”

Telestia sipped her tea while complaining about how the king still had not given her permission to accompany them.

While the three of them continued talking back and forth, a guard eventually came to tell them that all the preparations were complete.

“I apologise for having made you wait. Everything is ready now, so please, if you would.”

Prompted by the knight, Cain and Silk stood up from their seats and headed towards their carriage.

The carriage the two of them got onto was one that had been prepared by the royal family for them, and it was large enough to be able to carry ten people. It had four horses pulling it, and both the coachman and guards had been sent from the royal knights. The number of guards was twenty, more than ever before.

As they got into the carriage, Duke Eric came to see them off.

“Cain-kun, Silk, please take care.”

“Yes, of course.”

“I get it, father, all right?”

The two of them responded to Eric.

“Ah, and then, Cain-kun. …no sharing the same bed yet, okay?”

“Eh?”

“Huh?”

“Wha-…say what!?”

Telestia reacted the most to Eric’s words.

“Cain-sama and Silk in the same bed… he hasn’t even done that with me, how could I let myself get beaten to the punch…”

Cain immediately tried to correct Telestia, who was staring at the ground and muttering like that.

“Teles! That’s not happening! It’s all right, okay!”

“Huh! Indeed… announcing your engagement hasn’t happened yet, and yet to be sharing the same bed…”

“That’s right. The announcement of our engagement hasn’t happened yet, so we’re not going to do something like that. Okay? Silk, you tell her too– –”

Cain turned to his side to look at Silk, but it turned out she was staring at the ground with a bright red face, muttering ‘Sharing a bed with Cain…’ in a nearly inaudible voice.

“Hey, Silk! Come back to this world, will you!”

Hearing Cain’s words, Silk looked up with a startled face.

“Teles, it’ll be fine. There’s no way I’d sleep in the same bed as him.”

Silk said, her cheeks red, wild delusions having already made themselves at home inside her head.

“I’m terribly sorry to interrupt, but we should be going…”

One of the knights escorting them interrupted apologetically.

When Cain looked around, everyone was ready to depart, all they were waiting for was his signal to go.

“Ah, sorry. Hey, Silk, you get on the carriage too. Then we’ll depart.”

Cain prompted Silk to get in the carriage, then got in himself afterwards.

“Well then, depaaaaarture!”

At Cain’s words, the guards leading the whole procession began moving, with the carriages behind them doing the same soon after.

Cain stuck his head out of the window and waved to Telestia.

“Teles, I’m off then!”

“Cain-sama, please be careful. I’ll be waiting for you!”

Cain continued waving until Telestia eventually disappeared from sight.

And thus the carriages departed towards Silbesta.

1in chapter 51 it says one month south-west, though?
