Volume 3 Chapter 3: The Town of Silbesta 2/2

This chapter is updated by NovelFree.ml

Cain’s field of vision, dyed a blinding white, gradually returned.

In front of him was the pure white world of the gods, as well as the gods themselves, sitting down around a table.

“Cain, you’re always so entertaining.”

Zenom, sitting in the middle, smiled at him, stroking his beard.

Cain sighed at the fact that they were always watching him through that screen of theirs for their entertainment.

“It has been a long time since we last met. I had some questions for you, see…”

“Yeah, that little girl called a ‘Saint’, right. Lime is the god that little girl is the oracle of. Well, she doesn’t even stand up when doing so though…”

Prompted by Zenom, Cain sat down in his usual seat.

And then Lime, who was right beside him, opened her mouth.

“You’ll be meeting the Saint I’m giving commandments to in a couple of days, right? I want you to protect her.”

“You want me to protect her?”

Cain tilted his head in confusion at the sudden declaration.

“We gods watch over all humans equally. Even if something happens, that’s just a part of life. You’re a little amusing though, so we watch you more often.”

“Amusing, you say…”

Cain pursed his lips at Lime’s words. Zenom lightly cleared his throat, at which Lime pulled herself together and continued talking.

“Well, you see, even though us gods are praised in the church, it’s split into two factions. The faction of the Saint, whom our voices can reach, and the faction of the pope, who rules the country. And now, as he found her heading to your country a good opportunity to do so, the pope has concocted a plan to do away with the Saint. The Saint has received my blessing, and she’s a very timid and devout child, so I would like you to save her.”

If the Saint were attacked in the Kingdom of Esfort, it was easy to imagine what huge uproar there would be, one that would even get the royal family mixed up in it. Moreover, there was no going back once she had been assassinated. It would also cause trouble for Cain and Silk’s families, and that was only putting it lightly.

“If I’m there, I’ll probably be able to do something. Although I can’t be with her 24/7…”

Even though he suspected he was getting involved in something troublesome again, Cain nodded.

“You’ll probably be able to do something. We’ll leave it to you then, Cain. I think it’s about time now though…”

With those words from Zenom, Cain’s field of vision dyed itself white once again.

Returning to his senses, he had returned back in front of the altar.

Not having noticed anything, Silk was sitting next to him, still praying. As he was looking at Silk’s face from the side, she opened her eyes as if she had finished with her prayers and turned towards him.

As the two looked at each other, Silk blushed a little.

“Cain-kun, being stared at so much is kinda embarrassing…”

“Sorry, I was lost in prayer.”

He smiled at Silk, after which the two of them left the church, having finished their prayers.

After that, they spent the day leisurely, walking around the town, just the two of them. Needless to say, they received another lecture about the Marineford religion from Ragnaf over dinner.

And a few days later, the day when they had to go pick up the Saint arrived.

Going to the border to meet her were Cain and Silk, with ten royal guards, and Ragnaf, leading ten knights.

They were also accompanied by a number of servants and attendants.

Ragnaf’s carriage led the way, with the carriage Cain and Silk got on following it as if it was an escort.

“Cain-kun, do you know what kind of person the Saint-sama is?”

“I know she’s around our age, but nothing else really…”

While replying to Silk, Cain recalled what Lime had told him.

(Lime said she was being targeted, I wonder if it’ll be okay… It would be nice if nothing happened.)

The border was half a day’s distance from the town, so when they arrived at the meeting-place, they started preparing lunch.

There was a small river flowing along the border, with a bridge crossing over it into the Holy Country if Marineford.

“This is where we will be meeting the Saint-sama. We’ve put some tents up, so please wait there.”

The tent they were guided to had a carpet, table and chairs. Cain and Silk drank black tea that had been prepared by one of the attendants.

As the black tea in this territory was made with added dried special fruits, its faintly sweet fragrance wafted through the air.

“This black tea with added fruits is also delicious.”

While the two of them talked about such topics, they continued their conversation, occasionally nibbling some sweets.

While chatting, Cain was using [Search], checking how things were on the Marinefordean side of the border. If he focused on a single direction, he could now know everything that was happening even ten kilometers away.

He had already found the carriage heading towards Esfort. However, he could also see that there was a group of people following that carriage with a fixed distance.

As he couldn’t see it visually, he wondered if they were merchants or bodyguards or something.

They were around five kilometers away, so Cain estimated that they would arrive at the border in an hour or so. Then, suddenly, he felt the people chasing the carriage closing in on it.

Then the carriage stopped moving, and a fight commenced.

Cain stood up hurriedly, slamming down his cup of tea on the table.

“This is bad. The Saint might be being attacked.”

“Eh!? What!? Cain-kun, what’s up with you?”

Silk was surprised by both Cain suddenly standing up, and the words he had said right after.

“Silk, I want you to go tell Sir Ragnaf immediately. The carriage is being attacked a couple of kilometers away. I’m going on ahead.”

Cain immediately ran out of the tent, and passing by the royal knights, he went over the bridge into Marineford.

The knights were stunned by Cain’s actions that had come out of nowhere.

“Just what is Cain-sama doing…”

Silk also headed to Ragnaf’s tent soon enough, and relayed Cain’s message to him.

“What!? He said the Saint-sama was being attacked! We can’t have this. Send support immediately!”

Ragnaf gave out orders to the knights, who formed groups immediately, got on their horses and hurried over the bridge.

Six of the royal knights stayed behind to guard Silk, while four others got on their own horses and followed after the normal knights.

While the knights were moving around in a hurry, Cain was already on his way towards the Saint’s carriage, using wind magic to run at speeds over a hundred kilometers an hour.

There were not even ten people protecting the carriage. On the other hand, the attackers numbered around thirty. Cain accelerated impatiently.

Running for a few minutes, the carriage came into sight, where the defenders, wearing shabby equipment, were fighting the robbers, who had brand-new weapons.

A number of knights had already fallen.

Cain shot magic at the attackers.

[Water Bullet]

Tens of water bullets appeared simultaneously, downing the attackers one after the other.

Cain had adjusted their power, making the bullets non-lethal for those that didn’t have the bad luck to be hit directly.

The defenders, while surprised at the sudden appearance of a child wearing noble’s clothes, decided that, as he was knocking their attackers down one after the other, he was probably an ally, and started pushing the robbers back.

With Cain’s support, after a few minutes not even a single robber was standing any more.

More than half of the attackers had already died, while around ten of them were still breathing, groaning in pain from wounds inflicted by swords or magic.

Cain straightened his posture and took out his proof of nobility from his pocket and showed it to the knights.

“The Saint-sama is inside that carriage, correct? I’m Viscount Cain von Silford Drintor, from the Kingdom of Esfort. I came here on royal orders to meet the Saint-sama, but I noticed you were being attacked, so I came to help out. Where’s your squadron leader?”

The knights were obviously surprised at the child in front of them pulling out a proof of nobility from nowhere. Him showing them his proof of nobility meant that he was the head of a family.

One of the escorting knights stepped forwards at Cain’s words. He was wearing armour that matched the rest of the knights, and seemed to be in his forties. Unlike the other knights though, he had a red scarf wrapped around his left arm.

“I’m Masteena, a paladin who leads the knights protecting the Saint-sama. We are thankful for your help. – – Bolt… do it.”

Masteena called out to the knight named Bolt behind him, who, along with the other surviving knights, went up to the fallen attackers.

And all of a sudden – – he stabbed his sword through the attacker’s neck, putting an end to him.

“Wh-what!?”

Cain was stunned by the knight’s sudden actions. The attackers’ weapons were all brand-new. That fact spoke of how they weren’t just your everyday bandits. Although there had been a possibility of acquiring some information about them, the knights ended all the attackers’ lives.

“There’s no way we can take these bandits along to your country. Nor can we send them back to the town we left earlier. So, we’re disposing of them.”

“But, what about information from the – –”

“Unnecessary.”

Masteena interrupted Cain.

While that was going on, the knights had finished finishing off the attackers and returned to the leader.

“Captain, we’re done.”

“Mhm, good job. You’ll all get a bonus later.”

The knight named Bolt nodded at his Captain’s words and returned to the rest of the knights.

“– –why did you feel the need to kill them all…”

Cain was now distrustful of the knight captain. If the attacker had been left alive, they might have been able to get not a small amount of information. Them going out of their way to destroy the evidence made Cain raise his eyebrows.

“We are grateful for your assistance, but this land belongs to the Holy Country of Marineford. Sir Silford, you are a noble of the Kingdom of Esfort. As such, you have no say what goes on in this country.”

“…indeed.”

Masteena had made a sound argument. Even if something outrageous like this happened, this place was still the Holy Country of Marineford, and as such, one had to abide by this country’s laws.

So, Cain had no choice but to nod reluctantly.

After all that was over, the sound of countless hooves could be heard approaching from Esfort.

With Ragnaf leading them, around ten of both knights and royal knights came galloping up.

“Sir Cain! Sorry to have kept you wai-… what the… what is this…”

The close to thirty attackers were all lying on the ground, dead.

The knights became speechless at the sight. It was truly a scene of hell, with a mountain of bodies and sea of blood.

Naturally, with such a scene, the blood would attract monsters, not to mention all the bodies becoming a breeding ground for germs, so, obtaining permission from Masteena, Cain decided to bury them all.

Cain made a hole in the ground with magic, into which the knights threw the dead bandits one after the other. When all of them had been thrown in, Cain once again used magic, this time to cover the hole with earth.

The bodies of the three knights that had passed on were stored in a magic bag Masteena had in his possession.

“Sir Silford, we are grateful for your aid. Naturally, under these circumstances, we can’t have the Saint-sama disembark from the carriage. Please, if you could accompany us to the town.”

“– – Understood.”

Their formation reorganized, with Ragnaf leading the way with Silbesta’s knights. The Saint’s carriage and its guards went along in the middle, with Cain and the royal knights following at the very rear.

And thus, they proceeded to the place where Silk was anxiously waiting for them.
