Adam, wearing Zhou Liang’s face, found most, if not all, of the information related to the Wall, as well as the rune magic shielding and strengthening it, inside his office. But because he lacked eyes, it took him some time to go through all the information. He spent two hours going through the crucial intel, and by the end of it, he more or less knew the ins and outs of the Wall.
However, he could not operate it. That authority belonged to the master of the Wall. In this case, that was the General of Tiesha Tang’s army, Han Xun.
To be more precise, only his mana signature could alter the functions of the Wall.
"This is going to be a problem," Adam murmured, a deep frown on his unfamiliar face.
The Faceless Mask granted its wearer flawless shapeshifting. Meaning, the wearer could mold their body and flesh and mimic their target’s face, body, voice, scent, and most importantly... their mana signature!
However, Adam knew the deep enmity that Goro shared with Han Xun. He’d heard the Venom Dragon speak on many occasions about how he needed to be the one to deal the final blow to this arch nemesis of his.
"Hmm, must I kill him with my own hands?" Adam mumbled, stroking his beard. "And leave nothing for Goro... wait a minute!"
Adam suddenly realized that he didn’t need to kill Han Xun.
He could just... become him!
It’s a good thing that I met him earlier today, he thought.
Thanks to the mask’s passive ability, I was able to completely memorize his body structure, voice, scent, and even his mana signature.
Yes, this is possible. I just need to be very careful. Can’t have the Tiesha Tang army see two Han Xuns inside the camp.
Now, onto the next problem...
Adam massaged his forehead in slight dismay.
How the hell should I hide my eyes?
He couldn’t wander the Wall with a bandage covering his eyes. Nor could he go out without concealing them. At times like these, he hated the fact that he could not use magic. Just a simple illusion spell could have done the job.
Perhaps... there’s an illusion magic Artifact somewhere here? Even a Grade 1 Artifact would do.
As for the mana fluctuations that will be emitted while activating the artifact, I can conceal them with the help of the Faceless Mask!
Damn it, this artifact is way too useful, only if it didn’t have the one glaring flaw...
Having made up his mind, he quickly called for one of his attendants.
A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door.
"Vice General, may I enter?"
Adam adjusted his posture and said in a deep voice, "Come in."
The attendant entered and immediately frowned when he saw Zhou Liang lower his head and massage his temple.
"My Lord, is something the matter? Should I call a Herbalist?" he asked with concern.
Without raising his head, Adam waved a hand. Then, said in a dismissive tone. "Find me an Artifact capable of illusion magic. This is crucial for tomorrow’s battle. Now, go!"
The attendant straightened his back. "Right away, my lord!"
Almost ten minutes later, Adam found himself playing with a pendant studded with an emerald gemstone. This was a Grade 2 Artifact capable of weaving illusions. It was enough to fool the eyes of a Mana Vortex Magus if they weren’t proactively looking for any flaws.
He put the pendant around his neck and activated its enchantment. A moment later, fog swirled above his hollow eyes, and then a pair of brown eyes weaved into existence.
Adam blinked a few times, then smiled. He then rose to his feet and exited his office.
It was time to put his plan into motion.
***
Adam wore Zhou Liang’s face and walked through the camp, inspecting the soldiers who would fight the following day, ensuring the armory was up to date, and making sure that supply lines ran uninterrupted.
He did everything that Zhou Liang did. As the Vice General of the army, his workload was significantly more than the General as well as any other top officers.
It was close to midnight, and most of the top officers had already retreated to their private quarters. The camp was patrolled by Mana Liquefaction Magi and only a handful of Mana Vortex Magi, who didn’t take things seriously.
Who could blame them? They were nestled within the safety of the Wall and protected by towering cliffs on both sides. The Kurogane Pass was said to be unconquerable. This gave rise to feelings of complacency.
Never in their wildest dreams could they have imagined that not only was the Wall secretly breached, but one of their top officers had even been killed and his face stolen!
"What do you think you’re doing, soldier?!" Adam approached a Magus guard who was yawning without a care in the world.
Seeing the Vice General suddenly appear out of nowhere and reprimand him, the guard was dumbstruck.
Adam roared. "Yawning while on night patrol? Are you so tired of living? Be alert, you stupid dog!"
"Y-yes, Vice General!" The guard straightened his back. He seemed to be on the verge of tears.
Adam spat at the guard’s feet, then stomped away.
Because of his sudden arrival and how he’d reprimanded the guard for not doing his job properly, the surrounding guards became serious, afraid that the Vice General would scold them next. Or worse, punish them.
After briefly touring the camp, Adam learned that there were still around two thousand fresh soldiers. If things went according to Tiesha Tang’s plan, then the Tsuitsui army would definitely perish the following day.
There was no way a group of injured and weakened soldiers, numbering less than five hundred, could hope to stand against an army of two thousand fresh and uninjured men.
Not unless the Ghost intervened.
Adam arrived before an entrance leading to an underground level beneath the Wall. That was the place where the towering structure’s main control system was housed.
"Vice General!" Two guards stationed by the entrance immediately straightened their backs upon seeing Zhou Liang approach them.
Adam nodded. "At ease."
He then gestured for them to open the door.
"Yes, my lord!" The guards respectfully obliged and then opened the door for him.
Then, they watched him descend the flight of stairs and disappear into the darkness.
After they’d closed the door, the guards exchanged confused glances.
"Why would the Vice General visit the Nexus Hall at this time of the night?" Asked one of them.
"Who cares?" The other one shrugged.
The first guard felt something odd about the Vice General and his sudden visit to the Nexus Hall. But in the end, he sighed without concern.
"Yeah, who cares..."
