Chapter 1390: Another Divination

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Adam sat in the same spot for a long time.

The joy of countering the corruption and nourishing his body was overshadowed by the results of his divination.

He kept thinking over and over again: eyes, tendrils, gates, and the river... what do they all mean?

Especially the mysterious river.

Of all the memories he had absorbed, not a single one of them included the existence of the river that flowed backward.

He had learned about the River of Fate and even had the privilege of interacting with it once. In fact, he had even learned of the elusive River of Time from the memories of the experts.

But the river that flowed backward? He had no idea about it whatsoever.

Adam believed that he was quite knowledgeable for someone of his station. This confidence stemmed from the fact that he had absorbed a great deal of memories from the experts of the Greater Universe.

Yet, he knew nothing about this strange river that flowed backward into the past. Nor did he know anything about the Beyond.

He couldn’t help but wonder... were these things something that he wasn’t supposed to know?

The more he thought about it, the more solemn he became.

Just what the hell have I stumbled onto?

Come to think of it...

He suddenly recalled something that he had done in the past. At the time, it was just a passing whim. But now that he looked back on it, that event could be considered to be what set all of this into motion.

The planting of the ash tree’s seed!

Somehow, this simple action of his had caused the world to gain sentience. And eventually, it was the Will of the World that had guided him to the Dark Valley.

Adam couldn’t help but wonder:

Could the Great Mother have known what was happening in the Dark Valley?

No, it’s very likely that she knew. After all, she’s the silent cosmic observer. One of her many titles is The One Who Watches.

Then the chances of the Great Mother Yggdrasil knowing about the Beyond and the river that flows backward are also very high.

The more Adam thought about it, the more he believed that this was highly esoteric knowledge that someone like him had no business knowing.

He then thought about another key detail.

Could the Great Mother have blessed the ash tree’s seed because she wanted Tron to gain sentience, so that it could then guide me to this forsaken place and deal with the abomination from the Beyond?!

Adam’s body involuntarily trembled.

I’m way out of my league here!

He gulped subconsciously.

Slap!

He slapped his cheeks and tried to get his mind straight.

That’s not what I should be focusing on!

The divination... what does it mean? I cast Augury in hopes of getting a clue regarding what would happen if I transplant the abomination’s eyes into myself.

But I ended up with even more questions.

Dragonshit!

He inhaled deeply and tried to calm himself down.

I’ll perform another divination,

he mused.

But this time... I’ll change my question.

It was important to note that because of his deep connection with the lotus, Adam was actually quite skilled in divination.

But, in the end, all divination results would turn out to be useless if he wasn’t able to interpret them correctly.

Divination wasn’t all-powerful.

And so, after preparing the magical components, he cast the spell one more time.

Rank 4 Spell: Augury!

As his consciousness drifted away, he repeated the following question in his mind:

What will happen in my battle with the abomination residing in the heart of the Dark Valley?

***

A colossal black serpent emerged from the shifting haze of symbols.

Its scales seemed to absorb all light, as if carved from darkness itself. Its pair of topaz eyes gleamed with cold intelligence.

Without any warning, the serpent began to slither away. With each movement, it grew fainter and fainter.

Until it vanished entirely, leaving behind nothing but an unsettling emptiness.

***

The vision ended there, and Adam’s consciousness gradually returned.

His brows furrowed into a tight knot, and he thought, A black serpent with topaz eyes?

Given his strong connection to the Coil of Eternity, Adam was certain that the two were related. However, he couldn’t recall ever meeting a black serpent with topaz eyes, especially one that was so vast, ancient, and powerful.

And that serpent slithered away and... disappeared?

What is this uneasy void that I feel?

Once again, Adam was left with more questions than answers. He was even beginning to wonder if the recent transformation had lowered his intelligence.

Well, the thing was...

The result from the first divination was too cryptic for him to understand, while the result of the second one was too obvious.

Is it because my questions are all related to the abomination, and that is why the results are so obscure?

So does that mean any divination relating to it will result in such answers?

No, that shouldn’t be the case either.

Adam’s spells had been strengthened by the lotus, making the possibility of a successful divination highly likely.

Then that could only mean one thing.

The problem lies with me, he thought with a dark look on his face.

I’m simply unable to decipher them!

He paced around the cave for a while, then sat back down again. He was ready for another round of divination, and this time, he was going to go with a simpler, more direct question, something that didn’t involve the abomination.

Adam prepared for the magical components of the spell one more time and then finally cast the spell.

Once again, his consciousness drifted away as he repeated the question in his mind.

Where will I be after the next planetary alignment?

***

A grand metropolis rose along the edge of the sea.

Towering buildings pressed against one another. Districts were linked by broad avenues. Massive spires pierced the skies.

The streets bustled with all kinds of species. Magic bled into every alley. Magi moved through the crowds in arcane robes, while Paladins roamed in gleaming armor.

Smoke curled from chimneys, and high above the city, griffons patrolled the sky.

Beneath it all, a second city sprawled underground, shrouded in shadows, mirroring the one above. Light and darkness entwined, two sides of the same coin.

Voices echoed in every nook and cranny ceaselessly. Money changed hands whether it was day or night. Laws weighed heavier than chains.

This was a city of magic, power, commerce, and ambition.

A city of magnificence.

A city of grandeur.

This was the City of Marvels.
