Possessions that could make me the wealthiest, most knowledgeable, and most powerful Magus in this world...Those words echoed repeatedly inside Adam's mind.
Wealthiest, most knowledgeable, and most powerful...
Wealthiest...
The raven-haired youth couldn't help but involuntarily gulp. He glanced at the Joker's visage, and although the latter was smiling slyly, Adam knew that he wasn't messing around.
Whether or not he was given ownership of this great secret plane truly depended on his answer.
"So what's it going to be, lad?" The Joker grinned from ear to ear.
Adam stiffened. "So that's it? I just answer the question, and the secret plane is mine?"
"Fafafa!" The Joker laughed out loud. "But, of course, the answer should be satisfactory and..."
His eyes narrowed.
"...The right one."
Adam blurted out. "Isn't right or wrong subjective?"
"It is." The Joker snorted. "I will decide whether the answer is right or wrong"
The raven-haired youth gritted his teeth. He turned around to ask his sister's opinion, but then his eyes narrowed.
"I've teleported them elsewhere," the Joker's voice echoed. "The answer should come from you and you alone, Adam Constantine. Do not let others' opinions sway your heart."
Adam sighed and turned back around. He glared at the flamboyant spirit and said, "You know me so well, don't you!"
The Joker simply smiled in response.
Adam bit his lower lip, wondering whether it was a good idea to throw some insults at the clown. But at the last moment, he turned around and cursed under his breath.
"Dragonshit!"
He paced back and forth for a few minutes. At last, he walked up to the spirit and asked something that had been on his mind.
"Sir Joker, do you mind satisfying my curiosity?" He then quickly added. "It is unrelated to the final test."
"Hmm, go ahead." The Joker snapped his fingers and summoned a large cushion mid-air. Then, he hopped on top of it and casually lay down.
"You said Magus Mathias was a Transcendent Magus," Adam began. "So how was he able to return to the Outer Universe with his arcane level? The laws of the universe should not have allowed such a thing."
The Outer Universe was the outermost part of the Magus Universe, occupying only a small fraction of its vast expanse. It was distant, sparse, and far less saturated with mana than the Greater Universe.
In this remote stretch of existence, Mana Core Magi stood at the peak of power. They were the strongest beings capable of traversing its worlds and enduring the void between them.
The Outer Universe could not sustain anything beyond that arcane level. Its laws rejected higher existences outright, expelling any being that surpassed the limits it imposed.
Besides, existences greater than the Mana Core Rank had no reason to venture into the Outer Universe in the first place.
There was little there to interest them. No higher laws to comprehend, no abundant mana to harness, no treasures worthy of their attention. To such beings, the Outer Universe was barren and restrictive, offering nothing that justified the effort of crossing into it.
The Joker's eyes narrowed as he intently studied the raven-haired youth.
"Lad, you... who are you?" He couldn't help but ask. "Are you some old monster from the Greater Universe whose soul traversed the void and then inhabited the body of this child?"
The corners of Adam's lips twitched. "You sure have quite the imagination." "Are you a reincarnated individual who has retained the memories of their past life?" The Joker pressed.
"Goodness arcana, stop it!" Adam couldn't help but roll his eyes. "In my youth, I inherited the legacy of a powerhouse from the Greater Universe, which is why I'm privy to such knowledge. Thought I'd mentioned this to you before."
"Huh." The Joker stroked his chin. "Is that so?"
"Yes, of course!" Adam was bewildered. "Do you really think a reincarnated old monster would behave the way I did in my youth? Come on."
The Joker pursed his lips. "Fine. Fine."
He sighed.
"While it is correct that beings greater than the Mana Core Rank cannot set foot in the Greater Universe," he began, "there are still some loopholes one can
exploit."
Adam's brows furrowed as he listened intently.
"And one of them is..." the Joker continued.
"Mana oath."
Adam was stunned, his eyes slowly widening.
"Heh." The Joker chuckled. "Did you think mana oaths were only meant for contracts, or to see whether someone was telling the truth?"
He paused.
"The mysteries of mana oath run far deeper than that, young lad."
Adam remained silent for a few moments as realization dawned on him. And
when it did, he was truly astonished.
"Don't tell me... did Magus Mathias... did he swear a mana oath with the
universe itself?!!"
The Joker smiled. "You catch on quick."
He paused for a moment, his lips curling into a sad smile.
"My master was at the peak of the Transcendent Rank when he neared the end
of his lifespan," he began.
"He knew his end was near, and so he chose to return home. But as you said, the laws of the universe forbade his entry into the Outer Universe. And so, he swore a man oath with it. In exchange for his remaining life, he was granted passage back to his homeworld, just long enough to lay down his inheritance."
He exhaled softly.
"The universe judged it an equivalent exchange, and thus... allowed him to
return home."
Adam's body trembled. "H-How many years did he have left when he made the
oath?"
"More than a hundred years," the Joker said with a smile.
"And instead of attempting to break through to the Saint Rank, he decided to return to Tron and lay down his inheritance?!" Adam was filled with disbelief. "It might be difficult for you to understand, as you are someone who prioritizes pursuing magic above anything else," The Joker said gently.
"But my master was different. He was talented, no doubt. Or he wouldn't have become a Transcendent Magus. But he also deeply loved the homeworld that
gave birth to him and nurtured him."
He spread his arms wide.
"And that is why he laid down this inheritance on Tron, so that future generations could benefit from it, and one day walk on the same path he once
did."
The Joker's gaze hardened.
"So, Adam Constanine," he said in an even voice.
"I will ask you again, if you inherit the Soaring River Secret Plane, what do you
intend to do with it?"
