Lucian left shortly after discussing the next stages of Operation Constantine with Adam.Meanwhile, Adam stayed behind in Constantine. He planned to rest here for a couple of days before resuming his journey.
The raven-haired youth made his way past the layers of security around the ash tree and finally reached the base.
He moved unseen, so no one sensed his presence.
Adam pressed his palm against the bark and gazed at the canopy with a light smile on his face.
"You've grown so big," he murmured.
He inhaled deeply and closed his eyes.
Then he recited a short prayer:
"Great Mother Yggdrassil,
"Root of the world and shelter of all living things.
"Spread your branches over this land,
"Let your roots hold the earth firm beneath our feet.
"Guard the fields, the forests, and the city that rests in your shade.
"Protect the innocent. Shield the children from fear.
"Turn aside the hands that would bring ruin.
"If a storm must come, let it fall on me first.
"Grant me strength to stand where others cannot.
"Grant me the will to fight, not for glory, but for those who cannot.
"O Great Mother, watch over this land.
"And if sacrifice is demanded... let it be mine."
Somewhere along the countless trials and battles, Adam had changed.
He had once only cared for himself. Survival was his only rule. He trusted no one and kept everyone at arm's length.
But hardship has a way of reshaping a man.
He fought beside others. He bled with them. He survived because of them. And slowly, without noticing, he began to care. Their lives stopped being variables in his plans. Their faith in him stopped feeling like a weakness he could exploit, and started feeling like a responsibility he had to honor.
The cynic who trusted no one learned to rely on allies.
The selfish survivor learned to fight for something greater than himself.
And in doing so... he found purpose.
The vibrant leaves of the great ash tree rustled softly, as if responding to Adam's conviction. He opened his eyes and felt the warm breeze rustle through his raven-hair.
Suddenly, his eyes narrowed.
He heard footsteps approaching. He turned toward the source of the sound and saw a familiar person he had not expected to see here.
A young woman with dark hair streaked with orange approached. She wore a flowing white gown that moved gently with each step. Her orange eyes gleamed with quiet vitality.
Perched on her shoulder was a small yellow bird, leaning close as if whispering something into her ears.
Adam's pupils constricted, and he thought to himself in surprise, Autumn?
Indeed, it was none other than Autumn Godsaint.
With a light frown on her face, she approached the base of the tree. The birds and the little animals told her about an unfamiliar presence near the tree.
However, she couldn't see anyone there.
How strange, she thought.
She was about to turn away when suddenly, she saw a teenager with raven-hair standing at the base of the tree, seemingly admiring its beauty. She found this person familiar for some reason, but couldn't quite put a finger on it.
With a slightly stern look on her face, Autumn approached the figure and said, "This place is out of bounds, kid. How did you even get past security?"
Adam turned to her with a smile. He then awkwardly scratched the back of his head. "Ah, forgive me, my lady. I didn't know I wasn't allowed here."
Autumn intently studied the youth, the frown on her face deepening. "Do I know you from somewhere?"
Adam laughed. "Probably not. Mother always said I had a common face. So people often mistake me for someone else."
The corner of Autumn's lips twitched. You call that a common face?
She shook her head and sighed. "Return to the Inner City. And don't come here
again."
"Yes, yes, apologies!" Adam offered a bow and then darted away.
Autumn watched the youth's departing back with a puzzled look in her orange
eyes.
Why does he look so familiar?
Anna sat in the outdoor seating area of a popular teahouse in the Inner City.
On the table in front of her, Valerian lay sprawled out, reading a book written in a strange language she couldn't understand.
"Where did you get this book, Val?" She asked curiously as she sipped from the teacup.
"Someone from my clan gifted it to me," Valerian said softly, attention glued to the book. "It's about magic that my kind excels at."
Intrigued, Anna asked, "What are you studying?"
"Dream magic. Dream divination. Things like that," Valerian said nonchalantly.
"I'm still too weak to cast dream magic, though. I'd have to reach the Transcendent Rank first. But... maybe I can test it on my brother."
"Dream magic?" Anna arched a brow. "Sounds fancy."
Compared to the young dragon's magic, hers seemed... lackluster.
"You probably don't remember it, Val, but you once subconsciously pulled me
into a dream."
Adam's voice appeared out of thin air.
And the next moment, his figure appeared, already seated at their table.
"I did?!" Valerian got on all fours. "When! How!"
Adam nodded and then briefly recounted the incident when he was healing his
severe burns in the Tsuitsui Clan.
"Whoa!!" Valerian's pupils expanded in awe. "I'm amazing!"
Adam rolled his eyes in response.
"What plans now?" Anna asked with a faint smile.
"Let's spend a few days here and explore the city. What do you think?" Adam
asked.
"Yes, I wouldn't mind that." Anna looked around the place and smiled. "This
place is beautiful."
Later that day, the siblings checked into a tavern and took two separate rooms.
As the sun slowly dipped below the horizon, Adam found himself being relentlessly urged by the young dragon to become his experimental test
subject.
"Brother! Brother!" Valerian jumped on the bed. "Tell me! Tell me! How do I do
it?"
"I don't know." Adam shrugged and lay down on the bed. "Back then, you did it subconsciously, so try doing that again."
He thought for a moment before continuing, "Enter my spirit sea first. Then
focus on the intent of pulling me into a dream. Your way of casting magic is different from mine, so I suppose intent alone should be enough. And the connection we share should make it easier for you to-"
Before he had even finished explaining, Valerian had already transformed into a
gray light and entered his spirit sea.
Adam clicked his tongue. "So impatient."
A few moments passed, but nothing happened.
But then... Adam felt hi eyelids grow heavy.
"Dragonshi..."
Before shock could fully grip him, he was already pulled into a dream.
