Adam opened his eyes and found that he was no longer in his room.He found himself lying on his back, staring at a vast expanse of white nothingness. He felt slightly disoriented, as if he were in a state between slumber and wakefulness.
"I'm... dreaming" he murmured as he slowly sat up straight.
He looked around and softly called out, "Val?"
"Myu!" The adorable gray cat suddenly popped into existence and landed on his lap.
Valerian appeared excited, but also anxious as he snuggled into Adam's arms. "Brother... what is this place? I don't know how I did what I did. It just... happened."
Adam frowned as he gently held the young dragon and got to his feet.
"What do you mean?" he murmured as he looked around.
The little guy shook his head. "I don't know what I mean."
The corner of Adam's lips twitched. He knew that because of the strong familiar bond that he shared with the young dragon, it was relatively easy for Valerian to pull him into a dream, even without reaching the Transcendent Rank.
After all, Valerian had done it subconsciously before, when he was even weaker than he was now.
Adam noticed that the white space around them was trembling ever so slightly, flickering in and out of existence. Intrigued, he turned to his little brother and saw that he, too, was slightly shuddering from anxiety.
Could it be...
"Val, calm down." He said gently as he stroked the little guy's head. "Take deep breaths. Listen to my voice. Breathe in, breathe out. Breathe in, breathe out..."
Valerian closed his eyes and followed his brother's words. Slowly, but surely, he began to calm down. His little frame gradually stopped trembling.
Adam's dark eyes narrowed as he noticed the surrounding white space stabilizing.
"Good boy," he said with a smile.
"Brother, now what?" Valerian raised his head and glanced at the youth.
Adam was speechless.
Idiot, shouldn't you know that?!
He didn't say that part out loud, for he realized that Valerian's mental state was crucial to the stability of the dreamscape.
"What did the book say?" he asked in a gentle voice.
"Something about psyche and consciousness, uhm... and this and that," Valerian awkwardly said.
Adam was dumbfounded.
He really wanted to give the little guy a good beating. But instead, he gently asked, "Recall what the book said. Close your eyes, think deeply. Then tell me."
Valerian scratched his cheek, thinking hard.
"It said that the dreamscape isn't created from nothing" the young dragon began. "You don't build it like a house, but instead... you weave it from the target's psyche. The emotions become the sky. If you force it, the dream collapses."
Adam frowned, thinking to himself with intrigue.
So the dream is based on the target's psyche and not the weaver's?
Is that why that dream took place by the oak tree in my hometown? Yes, that's probably it.
Valerian shifted in his arms, now more focused.
"The book called it 'threading the consciousness'. You extend your intent into the spirit sea, latch onto a stable memory or feeling, and then layer your will over it. You aren't supposed to control everything. You're supposed to guide it. If your will is stronger than the dreamer's resistance, you can shape the environment. If not, the dream pushes back."
"I see," Adam murmured.
He had put up almost no resistance. Even the Lotus recognized Valerian.
--
The young dragon continued, "It also warned that the clearer the caster's mind, the more stable the weave. Doubt makes distortions, fear creates cracks, and if the weave snaps... both sides wake up."
Adam nodded slowly, trying to get the gist of the dream-weaving fundamentals.
"Okay," he said. "I'm going to focus on a memory, and you're going to catch it. Just like catching fish, yeah?
"Myu!" Valerian blinked. "I'll catch the fish!"
Adam nodded. "I'll bring the memory to the surface. You just wait for the tug.
Don't panic. Okay?"
His lips curled into an excited smile, and he added, "Feel for it. The moment my memory brushes against your consciousness, latch onto it gently."
"Got it!"
The next moment, both closed their eyes.
Adam recalled the memory of his hometown in Behal. Meanwhile, Valerian gently felt for the memory and then began weaving the dream around it.
The white surroundings began to ripple like a mirage under the heat. The empty space wavered, then slowly started to gain color.
Golden wheat pushed up from the ground, spreading in gentle waves. In the near distance, an oak tree took shape, its trunk solidifying. Beside it, a small hut
formed piece by piece.
The raven-haired youth was completely enamoured by what he was witnessing. The dream did not stretch far. It was only a small patch of reality carved from the white void.
The borders of the dreamscape appeared to be breathing, as it slowly pushed outward. Threads of color crept into nothingness, expanding inch by inch. It was unstable but growing, like a fragile island growing in an endless sea of
white.
It took time, and the edges still appeared blurry and white, but Valerian had finally managed to weave a dream from Adam's memory!
"...Incredible!" he exclaimed softly.
Valerian finally opened his eyes, his topaz pupils gleaming with excitement, pride, and wonder. "Did I do it?"
"Yes..." Adam was still in a state of shock. "You did it."
Valerian clapped with great excitement. "I'm a genius!!"
But the moment the little guy allowed his emotions to overwhelm him, the dreamscape trembled. It looked like it was almost on the verge of collapse.
"Calm down, Val."
Adam's gentle voice echoed in the young dragon's ears.
"Control yourself. Stabilize your emotions."
Valerian quickly closed his eyes and murmured. "S-Sorry..."
He took steady breaths in and finally managed to calm down his raging
emotions.
The dreamscape gradually stabilized as well.
Adam, still shocked by what he had just witnessed, remained silent for a long
time. He glanced at the familiar surroundings and then at Valerian, who rested
in his arms.
So this is dream magic, he wondered in awe.
This is the power of shaping reality itself!
