Several people had gathered on the upper deck of the Red Wind.Although they couldn't see the battle taking place on the ground below, they could still hear the distant rumble of thunder and the sound of explosions echoing time and time again.
Lisa stood at the edge, her hands clasped tightly around the railings. The wind pulled at the hems of her gown, but she didn't move. Her gaze stayed fixed.
And although her face remained impassive, the look in her eyes betrayed her inner feelings. Concern flickered across the green eyes, and whenever the distant sound of thunder rumbled, her hands clutched the railing a little tighter.
She turned to the side and saw Adam calmly standing with his hands clasped behind his back. She knew he was constantly checking on Edward's battle, and that he wouldn't let anything happen to him.
But still... she couldn't cast away the heavy feeling gnawing at her heart.
Edward had only just advanced to the Mana Core Rank a few days ago. As such, it was already a difficult match-up for him to fight someone who had centuries of experience. And as if that weren't enough, she just learned of another enemy Mana Core Magus joining the fray.
In such a situation, how could she not feel apprehensive? Although she and Edward were no longer together, and she didn't respect him as much as she used to, she couldn't help but worry about him.
Suddenly, she saw a figure move past the people gathered on the bow and walk toward Adam.
She cast her gaze on this person, and her eyes narrowed.
Blackfire Balthazar!
She couldn't help but begin to wonder with slight hope in her heart.
Is Adam going to send Lord Balthazar to aid Eddie?
But then, she heard Adam's cold words echo through the deck. His tone was low but carried immense depth.
"Burn that place to the ground."
A tense atmosphere settled on the Red Wind. No one really knew what the Dark King's instructions meant. They could only patiently wait to see how Blackfire reacted to it.
Blackfire flexed his shoulder muscles and weaved hand seals. As his feet left the bow of the ship, he turned to the Dark King and nodded.
"Aye, Commander."
And then he flew away, his figure tearing past the clouds and heading further north.
Seeing the direction Balthazar was headed toward, Lisa couldn't help but frown.
Is he not going to help Eddie? She thought to herself as she subconsciously clutched the fabric of her gown.
She glanced around the deck, looking to find Anna. She hoped to go with her and ask Adam about what was happening. But after searching for a few moments, she couldn't find her.
Anna hadn't stepped out of her cabin for the past few days. Everyone knew what she was attempting, so no one dared to disturb her.
Lisa heistated briefly, her hands clenching and unclenching a few times. She then took a deep breath and strode toward the head of the bow.
Glancing at the familiar, yet all so unfamiliar, back of her childhood friend, Lisa finally mustered the courage to speak.
"Adam," she called out gently.
The Dark King turned to her, his earlier cold expression replaced by warmth and a gentle smile.
"Worried about Eddie?" he asked softly.
Lisa felt warm in her heart. No matter how dignified and authoritative Adam behaved with the rest of the Magi of this elite force, to her, he always spoke gently... like he was conversing with a dear friend.
She silently walked right next to him, her hands clasping the railing once again. She didn't answer his question directly. Instead, she turned toward the distant storm clouds. She was silent for a few moments before finally speaking.
"You think he's going to be all right?" She asked, her voice barely a whisper.
Adam shrugged nonchalantly. "He'll live."
Lisa almost smacked Adam on the shoulder, but quickly realized where she was and that there were several of his subordinates standing behind.
She sighed in light exasperation. "But if something were to happen... you'll save him, won't you?"
"Heh," Adam chuckled. "How can I let my brother die under my watch?"
He turned to her and could see how much relief washed over her just from a
few simple words. He could clearly see the concern in her eyes, which she so fiercely tried to hide, but failed.
"You still care for him," Adam said with a faint smile.
Lisa did not answer. Her silence itself was the answer.
Adam thought for a moment, then asked, "Is there any chance that you both... you know-"
Lisa cut him off without hesitation.
"No."
Adam raised his hand slightly in a show of surrender. "Just asking."
He knew her childhood friend. He knew Lisa wasn't someone who bent easily. She was a headstrong woman. Once she made a decision, she held on to it. Edward had crossed the line too many times. No matter what they had once meant to each other, no matter how deep it had been, that trust was gone.
And for her, that was enough. There was no going back.
"Fattie's loss, honestly." Adam tried to lighten the mood.
However, Lisa's expression remained hard. Noticing that, Adam couldn't help but softly sigh, silently reprimanding himself for even bringing up that topic in
the first place.
There was another reason Lisa refused to go back to the way things were with
Edward. One she didn't say out loud.
Deep down, she felt inferior to him...
Edward's talent in the arcane arts was on a completely different level. What
took her effort and time came to him almost naturally. The gap wasn't small. It
was overwhelming.
And she knew it. She knew it well.
If she stayed by his side, she wouldn't be his equal. She would be a burden. So even if there was still something between them, she chose to step away. Because to her, that distance felt necessary. She didn't want to be a burden to him, to Adam, to anyone she cared for.
She inhaled slowly and deeply, reining in the turbulent emotions that she had long since buried in her heart.
The distant thunder kept rolling, and all she could do was hope...
Hope that the Storm King emerged victorious, without paying too high a price.
