The sound of explosions and the painful cries of the monster echoed through the city.Adam ensured to keep the battle away from the ground as he exchanged
dozens of moves with his undead opponent. They fought in the skies and along the grey barrier.
The more time passed, the more difficult it became for him to fight the four-headed abomination. Every time the creature regenerated from an attack, it somehow became more powerful. To be more precise, the creature was beginning to adapt to the cadence of battle.
With so many innocent people taking shelter on the ground, Adam had to hold back from going all-out. And it was getting quite annoying. The need to destroy the pillar artifact increased by the second.
In the broken-down building somewhere in the city, Vortigan arrived at the gruesome scene. He entered through the broken wall, his gaze landing on two headless corpses and a pool of blood staining the ground.
The warden's body trembled. He didn't even cast a glance at Edsel. He barely knew the man.
But Elira... he had known her for so many years. He had lived with her, walked with her, practiced mindfulness with her, studied magic with her, eaten with her, and slept with her. He loved her.
And now, when he saw her cold, lifeless body, he broke down completely. Tears streamed down his blood-stained face as he knelt beside her body. With shaky hands, he reached out for her head and embraced it.
"Oh, no, no, no..." he murmured in between chokes and sobs. "Elira, why... why...?"
The entire situation should have been under their control. Even excluding the fact that Orion had already been "taken over", they still had seven Mana Core Magi and twelve undead knights on their side.
By all means, such a roster should have been more than enough to deal with a single enemy, no matter how powerful this enemy was.
They had all heard about the infamous Dark King. Despite hearing of his glorious feats, Vortigan was certain that nineteen beings at the Mana Core Rank should have been able to defeat him.
But the results were vastly different. All the undead knights had perished, and among the Mana Core-level cultists, he was the only one standing. He even had to unleash his trump card - the four-headed abomination. And yet, even that was turning out to be futile.
How could one person carry such strength? How could a single man even remotely have the capabilities to defeat so many enemies at the same arcane rank? Just what kind of enemy had the Cult made?
Vortigan wanted to feel enraged. He wanted to turn the hatred and anger into strength and seek vengeance upon the man who had killed Elira, but...
He just couldn't find the courage to. He was afraid. So afraid.
And so, he decided.
Vortigan gently closed Elira's eyes, which still radiated shock and fear. He then laid a gentle kiss on her forehead. A few moments later, he had already wrapped her corpse in a clean cloth and put it away inside his storage artifact. He rose to his feet and walked out of the building, not even casting a cursory glance at the other cultist. Once outside, on the broken alley, he turned toward the distant sounds of fighting, his eyes flashing with fear, but also fury.
A moment later, he turned around and walked away. He was going to ensure that the Dark King didn't leave this place alive. Even if it meant his own death. Regardless of the consequences, he was going to go all-out against the man who had murdered Elira. His Elira.
To hell with Master's orders of bringing him alive, he thought with venom in his eyes.
He retrieved the summoning artifact and poured mana into it, giving the four-headed monster a final, deadly command.
Vortigan's eyes narrowed as they flashed with rage and grief. His lips parted, and he coldly spat:
"Go berserk."
***
The monster swiped its claws, its speed now significantly faster than when it had emerged from underground.
Adam theorized that the creature must have been locked away in the depths of the prison complex, inactive for a very long time. And now, after it had warmed up enough, it was slowly getting faster and stronger.
However, he continued to nimbly evade the attacks in the air. He dodged when he could, and defended at other times. From time to time, he would slip in a counter-attack, but that hardly did any damage.
Adam had long since come to the conclusion that to deal with undead creatures like the one he was battling now, the optimal solution was not to fight them head-on at all.
It was to exile them into the depths of the spirit world.
And that was why he needed to deal with the giant pillar at the center of Jomuran. But no matter what he tried, the monster continued to prevent him from reaching the stone artifact. It was as if it knew what his motives were and was actively trying to disrupt them.
After exchanging dozens of moves in a span of only a few seconds, he found another opening. Taking advantage of this opportunity, he flew forward and
struck decisively.
Hand of Doom: Billowing Strike!
One palm facing the monster and the other facing skyward, Adam discharged a tremendous amount of mana and then spun his hands.
A moment later, a deafening explosion echoed across the skies of Jomuran as the upper-right half of the monster was completely obliterated. Along with its four arms, two of its heads were also reduced to blood mist.
However, Adam wasn't satisfied with the results at all. Instead, a dark expression blew across his face when he realized that the monster had instinctively leaned to the side at the last moment, just barely evading certain
death.
But the current outcome was good enough. As he watched the monster fall from the skies, he snorted and rapidly flew toward the stone pillar. He didn't bother finishing the creature, for he knew he wouldn't be able to not quickly
enough, at least.
Just a few strikes at the pillar and the barrier would come crumbling down. After that, he could effortlessly exile the abomination into the dark depths of
the spirit world.
But not even two seconds had passed when a vast and ominous aura spread through the city. The level of bloodlust and malice being radiated sent a chill
down Adam's spine.
Instead of stopping and turning to look at the source, he increased his speed
and flew faster toward the pillar.
But in the next heartbeat, intense alarm bells rang inside his mind, warning him
of the immense threat to his life.
There was no time to cast a spell, and no time to evade.
All he could do was coat himself with mana before the attack came down.
And when it did...
His world was engulfed in red.
