Chapter 1710 Final Barrier

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

"Raise the curtain!"

As soon as the enemy fleet had entered the attack range, Prince Marlow commanded his men to activate the defensive formation.

House Fireborne could be considered to be one of the wealthiest families in the Sovereign Union. For the longest time, they had depended on their numerous Grade 4 Artifacts to secure a stable standing among other kingdoms ruled by Mana Core Magi.

And when King Maximillian advanced to the Mana Core Rank, House Fireborne's standing was elevated even further.

And now, Marlow displayed the full might of his family's armory.

Dozens of Magi stood along the edge of the port, their hands pressed to the stone beneath their feet. Embedded into the ground were Grade 4 Artifacts, etched into the very structure of the pier itself. One by one, the Magi began channeling mana into them.

A faint glow spread through the carvings. Then a thin, silver layer of energy began to rise. It moved like water, lifting upward like a glowing sheet, forming a curtain that curved along the pier. The surface rippled. It was fluid, yet firm as it grew taller and sealed the harbor's edge.

The Amberfall Magi did not stop, however. More mana flowed in, stabilizing the barrier as it expanded and strengthened.

At the same time, along the city's southern wall, another set of Grade 4 Artifacts came to life. Light ran across the stone in straight lines, linking one point to another. Then, with a low hum, a second barrier rose. This was taller, broader, and more solid.

The barriers rose just in time. Cannons and spells were hurled from the Haynam fleet. However, all of them were stopped by the first barrier curving along the port.

Seeing the silvery curtain ripple with dozens of constant impacts, Prince Marlow knew the time had come. He inhaled deeply and then gave the signal. "Retreat to the wall!!"

The enemy bombardment intensified, strikes landing one after another as the barrier flickered under the pressure. The surface trembled, its light breaking and reforming with each hit, which was akin to the full might of a Rank 3 spell. Thousands of Amberfall Magi began to pull back, leaving the edge of the port and moving toward the southern wall in steady lines. There was little panic in their movements, but they were filled with urgency.

At the same time, the Haynam fleet continued to advance, closing the distance bit by bit as their attacks grew heavier.

Seeing the Amberfall Magi retreat from the harbor, Prince Liam grew bold. "Attack! Keep attacking!"

His fleet continued to bombard the silvery curtain. With each hit it took, the barrier weakened and flickered. It seemed that it would barely hold for another minute. And the moment the barrier crumbled, Liam would lead his armada through the mouth of the harbor.

He had lost far more ships and men during Amberfall's second wave of attack. Naturally, he was enraged. In total, he had lost more than sixty warships! But he still had close to a hundred and forty ships left. And that was going to be more than enough to obliterate the enemy.

Under the relentless bombardment of Prince Liam's fleet, the silvery curtain held for nearly a minute.

Blow after blow struck its surface. The barrier rippled again and again, its glow flickering with each impact. Cracks of light began to spread across it. It was thin and faint at first, but it soon grew wider as the pressure built. Until finally, it failed.

The curtain shuddered once, its surface breaking apart in uneven waves. The silvery light dimmed, lost its form, and then collapsed inward. In the next moment, it dissolved completely, scattering into countless motes of fading light that drifted away and vanished.

The harbor of Amberfall lay exposed!

His objective now within reach, Prince Liam screamed at the top of his lungs. "Advance!!"

Now all that stood between the city and his army was the second and final barrier along the southern walls. But Liam was certain that it too would crumble under his army's might.

Slowly, the ships began to enter the mouth of the harbor, one by one. All the while, they kept up a relentless barrage, striking the second barrier again and again as they advanced.

Liam's ship was one of the first to enter the harbor. Standing tensely at the bow, his attendant, Rio, caught sight of the two towers built on either side of the harbor's entrance.

Rio's eyes narrowed when he noticed that the towers looked newly built. A foreboding feeling welled up in his heart, and he quickly turned to the prince. "Your highness, the-"

But his words were interrupted.

"We're almost there, men!" Prince Liam roared. "Bring that barrier down! Bring it down!"

The bombardment did not let up. Shot after shot slammed into the barrier as more ships pushed through the mouth of the harbor. One by one, they entered and spread out. The port was vast, large enough to hold at least a hundred and

fifty ships.

And as fate would have it, the Haynam fleet had been reduced to just the right number.

Standing atop the southern wall, Prince Marlow looked at the enemy fleet slowly entering through the mouth. Before him, the barrier constantly rippled as cannon balls and spells struck it time and time again. But the barrier still

held.

The thousands of Ambefall Magi waited with bated breath. Some even collapsed and vomited on the floor as they witnessed the sheer number of

enemy ships entering the port.

Seconds bled into minutes, and the minutes seemed to stretch on without end. Marlow noticed that all but about a dozen ships had entered the harbor. The remaining ships stayed anchored just outside the mouth, held in reserve in case

of any emergency.

He had expected this.

And now, the time had finally come.

"My Prince," Kasper called out to him in a shaky voice, knowing full well that what was about to unfold would be beyond anyone's wildest imagination.

"Aye." Prince Marlow nodded.

His following words were cold and ruthless.

"Pull the chain."

From the East and West Towers on both sides of the harbor's mouth, the order

was carried out at once. Heavy mechanisms groaned as the massive chain was

pulled tight.

Link by link, it rose from the water, thick and dark, stretching across the wide entrance. The surface of the water churned as it broke through, then settled as

the chain locked into place.

In mere moments, the passage was sealed.

There was no way out for the ships that had already entered. They didn't even notice that they had been trapped. Only the men aboard the dozen ships outside the harbor saw the giant chain. But there was nothing they could do

about it.

Once everything had fallen into place, Prince Marlow's roar thundered across

the battlements.

"Burn them!"

One by one, wooden barrels broke through the surface of the water and drifted

between the ships. By the time the enemy noticed them, it was already too late.

A flaming arrow cut through the air and struck one of the barrels.

For a brief moment, nothing happened. Then the harbor erupted in crimson

flames. Courtesy of Mikael the Mad...
