Chapter 1778 Beyond Saving

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Sparks flew in a clash of steel.

"How could you!" Daniel Ranzenberg had never felt so enraged.

All this while, he had thought that the passing of years would have calmed the hatred, anger, and sorrow in his heart.

More than forty-five years had passed since that fateful day…

He truly believed that he had managed to temper his emotions, that he had found a modicum of closure.

However, that was simply wishful thinking on his part.

How could he possibly hope to gain closure when he hadn't even avenged his dearest friend and his teacher, who was no different than a father to him?

And on this day, when he came face to face with the perpetrator, the man responsible for the deaths of two of the people closest to him, all the negative emotions buried in his heart came flooding out.

"You fucking traitor!"

Daniel raised his sword again, shadowy miasma swirling violently around its blade, and swung it vertically.

Marden Benton looked utterly detached as those accusations were hurled at him. He saw the blade coated with Daniel's mana coming straight at his head, but he didn't seem to be bothered about it at all.

At the last possible moment, he sidestepped and leaned his body away from the strike. Daniel's sword whizzed past his robes and ended up slicing through nothing but empty air. But when the blade's momentum was stopped by the ground…

Boom!

A giant fissure was instantly carved across the earth. This went on to show just how powerful and sharp Daniel's attack had been.

If so, then what did it say about the man who had just casually dodged it?

"Calm down," Marden said in a low voice. "You don't understand—"

Daniel changed his grip in quick succession, his eyes bloodshot from rage. Then, in a swift motion, he swung the blade in a diagonal upward manner.

At the same time, the winds behind Marden picked up. The man's eyes narrowed, his pupils constricting as intense alarm bells thundered inside his mind.

Another attack!

He honed in his senses as two daggers formed from his own blood appeared in his hands. Then, he jumped and twisted his body at an insanely impossible angle midair and parried both attacks.

Clang! Clang!

However, the threat was far from over.

As his body descended toward the ground, he saw the shadows below him come alive. Daniel willed them to solidify into sharp spikes and reach toward him.

At the same time, dozens of windblades were violently hurled at him from the side.

Marden gritted his teeth and rapidly weaved hand seals. And in the next heartbeat, the two attacks engulfed him in an explosion of wind, shadows, and blood.

Boom!

After retreating for several meters, Daniel finally came to a stop. His breathing was slightly heavy, and there was a dark frown on his face.

A gust of wind blew, and Nylian Feno arrived beside him, sword in hand. "We didn't get him, did we?" he asked in a grim voice.

Daniel shook his head, a deep frown marring his face. "I doubt it."

They hated to admit it, but the Blood Lord was far stronger than they were. After all, he was someone who had defeated Marcus Blackwood himself!

In the distance, a partial blood sphere had materialized. Its sides were etched with deep gashes caused by Nylian's wind magic. While the bottom-left side of the sphere was riddled with holes due to Daniel's shadow magic.

A moment later, the blood sphere slowly dissipated. Inside, Marden appeared standing tall and calm. He had only sustained minor injuries from the previous clash. And even then, those injuries were slowly disappearing thanks to his regeneration.

The Blood Lord glanced at the gaping hole in his right foot, slowly mending back to normal. Then he shifted his attention to the gaping cut on his left shoulder, which was similarly healing at a rapid speed.

Witnessing this, he couldn't help but sigh. He then casually said, "Using the blood of all those powerful Magi from Indus was truly worth it. Maybe blood really is the way going forward..."

He suddenly paused and slipped into thought. "Hmm, it's a pity they had to suffer for it, though."

Hearing the man say such vile things so flippantly caused Daniel to grimace. He clenched his jaw and gripped the sword hilt tighter.

"Just what the hell happened to you?!" He roared. "You were never like this!"

"Or perhaps, he was always like this and simply deceived us all," Nylian added, his eyes as cold as ice.

They all remembered the days when Marden was but a baby boy and would play with Daniel, Nylian, and even Marcus. Everyone doted on him back then. Everyone loved him. Most of all... Sabrina.

But now, even the word hatred fell short.

Marden clearly heard those words. At the same time, the ghosts of the Benton Family behind him seemed to agree with Daniel and Nylian.

The Blood Lord couldn't help but smile wryly. He turned to the two men and said in a lecturing tone, "Do you know what happens to a mortal's soul after it is harvested by a devil?"

Marden and Daniel quickly turned solemn. They didn't attack. But they didn't let their guards down, either.

"They are reborn in Hell," Marden continued. "Reborn at the very bottom of the infernal hierarchy. They are subjected to a lifetime of slavery and torment. And if they're fortunate enough to climb the ranks and become proper devils… well, they are made to fight for eternity."

The Blood Lord's lips curled into a crooked smirk. "If it's any consolation… the souls of the Benton Family will never suffer such a cruel fate. They shall pass onto the afterlife, as nature intended."

"Vile bastard!" Daniel roared at the top of his lungs. "This is your justification? This is what you tell yourself?"

Nylian, on the other hand, was much more cold. "But what if the devils lose this war?" he said. "Killing your family will have been for nothing then. Would you still be able to live with yourself?"

Marden's smile slowly faded away.

"As much as I hate to admit it… killing them had served a very crucial purpose. If they hadn't died, then I would have remained a puppet forever. But now, I am unshackled. I am free. Their deaths did not go in vain. All that happened was meant to happen. Everything has led us to this moment in time."

He paused briefly as he clenched his hand tightly.

"Their deaths made it possible for this world to survive. You may see this as the ramblings of a madman, but in the future… you will understand."

"You are beyond saving." Daniel's aura turned cold and bloodthirsty, completely unlike his usual stoic self.

Nylian didn't say a word. Instead, he raised his sword as his wind magic came to life around him.

"I thought my purpose fulfilled," Marden spoke as though in a trance. "But there is still one more thing left for me to do. And for that…"

His eyes turned cold as his bloodthirsty gaze locked onto Daniel and Nylian.

"You two need to get out of my way."
