"You fight well."One of the vampires said with a faint smile, revealing his sharp fangs.
"For a human," said the other, taunting.
Adam’s expression turned solemn.
Just from the aura radiating from the two vampires, he could tell they were extremely dangerous.
If he had to compare them with someone, he would place them on the same level as Aldo Wagner.
In other words, it was like facing two Wagners at the same time.
These vampires were physically built like Paladins and could cast magic like Magi. Hence, these undead creatures were so feared.
However...
Adam wasn’t the same man he had been when he fought his archnemesis on Tron.
"Before I kill you," he began, "let me ask you something."
The two brothers, Dorian and Louis, found themselves enraged upon being looked down upon by a human.
"Why are you so determined to get your hands on that... thing from the old man?"
Dorian’s eyes narrowed. "For power."
Louis, on the other hand, replied with venom in his voice. "Just because you took care of a few beasts and orcs and humans, do you really think you can fight us?"
His lips curled into a wide grin, twisting his face in the process.
"We’ve studied your every move, human," he continued.
"Have you, now?" Adam asked, amused.
While Louis was engaging in a verbal battle, his brother, Dorian, was carefully observing every last one of Adam’s moves. He looked beyond the young human and noticed, much to his dismay, that everyone except Esmond and Valerian had been knocked out cold.
What a clever man, he thought.
He secretly weaved a hand seal in an attempt to [Compel] the two inside the defensive formation. If possible, he didn’t wish to fight Adam. If he could get his hands on the item Esmond possessed, he’d be happy to withdraw from this fight.
But just before he could finish casting the spell, a gust of wind blew, and along with it came an ominous feeling.
Adam’s cold voice echoed once again.
This time, it came from very close by.
"I wish to test something."
The vampires froze.
In the blink of an eye, the young human had abruptly arrived between the two of them. In the next instant, his hands shot out and viciously clamped around their necks.
Adam tightened his grip. Yet no matter how much force he applied, he was unable to crush their throats.
"No matter. Let’s take this somewhere else."
He crouched ever so slightly, reinforcing his hips and legs. Then he vaulted into the darkness beyond, dragging the two vampires with him.
Inside the camp, Esmond was flabbergasted by what he had just witnessed.
"Did he just..." He was at a loss for words.
Adam was standing in front of him one moment, and the next, he was already before the two vampires who stood over a dozen meters away.
He didn’t even use a teleportation spell.
Just speed.
Valerian grunted, itching to set foot beyond the runic formation and watch Adam’s battle. But his brother had strictly forbidden him.
"Never mind," he grumbled. "Let’s just wait it out here."
"What... what do you mean?" Esmond turned to the panther. "Shouldn’t we go out there and help him?"
"Help him? Why?" Valerian tilted his head, puzzled. "It’s just two vampires."
***
Adam landed at a clearing in the woods.
The area was big enough for their battle, and at a considerable distance from Esmond and the rest. The runic formation he had set up around the camp would alert him instantly if someone tried to break through it.
There were a few reasons why he wanted to fight away from the camp. Most importantly, it was for the safety of Valerian, Esmond, and the others.
Also, he didn’t want Esmond to fully see all that he was capable of. If possible, Adam wanted to keep most of his cards hidden. This was a new world, after all. It was better to be cautious.
Furthermore, he wanted the vampires to satiate his curiosity.
"So what is it, folks?" he asked casually. "What does the old man have that you want so badly? Come on, you’ve been on our tail for ten days now. That can’t have been pleasant. Hiding from the sun all day, stalking us all night. What’s making you tick? Tell me."
Louis coughed violently as he rose back to his feet. "You lowly creature! How dare you!"
"Last chance before I butcher you," Adam said coldly, his eyes narrowing. "Are you going to tell me or not?"
It was directed at Dorian, who was the more cool-headed of the two vampire brothers. He rose to his feet, his pale face full of solemn wariness. Adam’s movements had been too fast earlier. He just couldn’t react in time.
He’s been hiding his true strength all this time, he thought.
Dorian raised his hands slowly, in a show of surrender. "Okay, we’ll tell you."
Louis turned to him and barked, "Dorian!"
"Quiet!" Dorian snapped.
He looked Adam in the eye and said in a solemn voice. "It’s a map. And a method."
Adam’s brows creased slightly. "A map and... a method?"
"Yes." Dorian straightened his posture. "That’s all I’m willing to tell you. However..."
His crimson eyes gleamed with a conspiratorial light. "If you help us retrieve that map, we will invite you with us—"
"Dorian, you can’t!" Louis interrupted him.
"Silence!"
Dorian had had enough of Louis not being able to control his emotions.
He then turned to Adam and asked in a low voice, "So what’s it going to be, human? Help us, and I promise you, you will be handsomely rewarded."
Adam slipped into silence.
But only a moment later, he clicked his tongue and lowered himself into a combat stance.
"I think I’ll pass."
His words had barely even left his lips, but he had already charged forward.
There was no wasted motion in his advance, and somehow he was able to generate maximum force from minimal movement. His footwork was impressive and beautiful.
In the blink of an eye, he had arrived before Louis and swiped his right hand in a clean chop toward the neck.
Seeing the vampire instinctively raise his hands to block, the corner of Adam’s lips curled into a smirk.
A feint!
Tyrannical mana swirled around Adam’s left fist, and he drove a vicious blow to Louis’ ribs.
BAM!
With a deafening impact, the vampire was lifted off his feet and hurled into the distance.
Dorian seized the opportunity to pounce. His claws were long and sharp, ready to reap the human’s life.
Adam thrust out his right hand toward him. From the shadows of his sleeve, half a dozen snakes emerged. They coiled around Dorian’s arms and neck before sinking their fangs into his cold flesh.
They failed.
But in the next moment, Adam stepped forward and clasped Dorian’s throat once more.
"Sturdy," he remarked.
Then he raised his other hand and pointed two fingers straight at the vampire’s head.
[Magic Missile]
