Chapter 1887: Simple Plan

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The plan was simple.

Though it carried great risks and required the team members to place all their faith in Adam.

It went without saying that Valerian would follow Adam to the ends of the universe. As for Genevieve, she had also begun to trust Adam after the days they’d spent together.

And as for Darren... Adam did not care if the Paladin trusted him or not.

As night fell and the crimson moon rose once again, the undead rose from their graves and resumed their battle. The clash of rusted steel and the terrifying sounds of their shrieks echoed throughout the battlefield.

Adam stood before the entrance, stretching his body lazily.

Behind him, Genevieve stood with Valerian in her arms. The former showed a concerned look on her face as she said, "Are you sure this will work?"

"Yup." Adam nodded confidently. "I dare say this is the only thing that will work."

He paused, displaying a reassuring smile to her. Then he continued, "You saw how the trail left behind your spiders was tampered with. So we can’t use that method for sure."

"What if..." Genevieve’s words trailed off.

"It will work," Adam assured her.

He turned to Valerian, then said, "Everything depends on you, Val. I’m the lighthouse, and you’re the ship, got it?"

The little guy brought his paw to his forehead and offered a salute. "Aye, aye, captain! Uh... wait. Aren’t I the captain?"

Adam chuckled fondly. Valerian had been in a happy mood ever since arriving in this secret plane. Adam guessed that it was because he no longer restricted the little guy to his spirit sea.

Seeing Valerian happy made Adam happy. Very happy.

"Yes, you are," he said.

He turned to Genevieve, then said, "Trust him. And protect him. Once you leave the safety of this chamber, run with all your might. We don’t know if and when the swarm will attack you. Okay?"

"Okay!" Genevieve nodded seriously.

Finally, Adam turned to Darren, who had been silent for all this while.

The raven-haired youth intently looked at the Paladin, causing the latter to feel uneasy. Then, he said simply:

"Look. If you wish to get out of this place, then follow my instructions. If you don’t, that’s up to you. But..."

Adam took a step forward and placed a hand on Darren’s shoulder. "I hope you won’t get in the way."

His words had turned cold. And his eyes narrowed.

"Will you, Darren?"

The Paladin’s eyes trembled. He did not dare to look Adam in the eye. Instead, he nodded silently.

"Good man." Adam offered a smile that wasn’t really a smile.

Then he turned away and headed back for the exit. He cast a sideways glance at Genevieve and said with a genuine smile, "Be careful, yeah?"

The woman nodded. Then she said in a soft voice, "You too."

Adam bid farewell to Valerian, rubbing his furry head. Then he took a deep breath and exited the underground hall.

Before long, he disappeared into the sea of undead above, blending seamlessly into their ranks.

Meanwhile, Genevieve, in the safe confines of the protected chamber, steeled her nerves. She whispered softly:

"Now we wait..."

The crimson moon finally dipped below the horizon, and a new day had arrived.

As if a silent command had been given, the fighting ceased. One by one, the undead abandoned the battlefield and sank back into their graves. Before long, only silence remained.

Mist slowly rolled across the land once more, swallowing the scars of battle.

Only then did Genevieve and the others emerge from the underground hall. It would be an understatement to say that she was nervous. However, she chose to trust Adam.

Even before emerging from the hall, she had already cast defensive and hastening spells upon herself. Meanwhile, Darren also prepared himself. He had been silent throughout the entire time.

Once they stepped out of the entrance, the mysterious mist hindered their senses once again.

Without wasting a moment, Genevieve turned to Valerian, who was still nestled cozily in her arms, and said solemnly: "Let’s go!"

"Myu!"

Valerian was incomparably excited. For the first time in a long while, Adam had placed such a heavy responsibility on his shoulders. And he would do everything to live up to his brother’s expectations.

He closed his eyes, felt for the familiar connection between them. The next moment, his eyes snapped open, and he turned in a particular direction.

"There!" he said, pointing his little paw.

Without hesitation, Genevieve burst into explosive speed, thanks to her augmentation spells, and ran where the little guy pointed. Darren followed closely behind.

With Valerian leading the way, Genevieve and Darren ran through the thick mist and across the barren wasteland.

Several times, Valerian abruptly changed direction without warning. At first, Genevieve thought he had lost the trail. But after the third or fourth turn, she realized something was wrong. Much to her shock, she realized that the mist wasn’t just obscuring their vision.

It was distorting their sense of direction!

Had they continued in a straight line on their own, they would have unknowingly drifted off course, circling the same stretch of wasteland over and over again.

Only the young dragon’s unerring sense of Adam’s true location kept them on the right path, guiding them through the deceptive mist toward their destination.

Several hours later, the trio arrived before another broken, dilapidated structure. Its crumbling walls barely remained standing.

At the shattered entrance, a lone figure waited.

Adam stood with his arms crossed, his shoulder resting against a broken pillar. His expression was calm, as though he had been expecting them all along.

As he watched them approach the entrance, his lips curled into a faint smile. "That wasn’t so tough, eh?"

"Myu!"

Valerian leapt from Genevieve’s arms, then jumped into Adam’s embrace. "Brother, how did I do?"

"You did well, little Val," Adam said while stroking the little guy’s head. "No. You did excellent!"

Valerian affectionately rubbed his head against Adam’s cheek.

Genevieve and Darren finally arrived, the former already out of breath.

"Anyone follow you?" Adam asked her. "Anything suspicious along the way?"

"No," Genevieve said in between ragged breaths.

Adam turned to Darren, who then shook his head in response.

"Alright, get in." Adam made way.

As the two disappeared into the dark passageway, Adam scanned the surroundings with an intense gaze. Though his senses extended no farther than ten feet, he remained still, waiting to see if anyone would follow.

A minute passed, but no one came.

At last, he turned and entered the sanctuary underground.

Several seconds later, the mist stirred, and a dark figure burst through the haze, landing atop the broken pillar Adam had been leaning against.

It was a bat.

Its crimson eyes gleamed with intelligence and... amusement.
