"...I don’t know," Michael said. "We just woke up here."He then turned to the teenager sitting next to him and said with a chuckle, "And I found him knocked out cold right next to me."
Koby nodded. If, for some reason, he woke up alone in this dreadful place, he wouldn’t know what to do. After all, this was his first time going on a mission with a band of adventurers. Needless to say, it was also the first time he had set foot inside a secret plane.
"I’ve been very lucky," he said.
Then he turned to Adam, who sat across from them, and said with admiration:
"It’s amazing how you can travel through the land at night. I heard the sound of battles and the constant screams. We all did. I don’t think I could have done what you did. You are very brave, sir Adam!"
The raven-haired youth glanced at the youngest member of their party, and simply smiled in response.
Brave? He thought in amusement.
I’m the most cowardly person I know.
"It’s true." Genevieve nodded at the Squire’s words. "If it weren’t for Adam, we wouldn’t have been able to make it out here."
She glanced at the grey cat who lay comfortably by the fire. "Valerian helped too," she added with a smile.
The little guy’s tail swayed gently in response.
Michael turned to Darren, who had been quiet ever since arriving, and couldn’t help but ask: "What’s gotten into you?"
Darren shifted his gaze from the fire to Michael. He stared for a moment before turning back to the fire.
"Someone’s in a bad mood." Michael scoffed.
"Leave him be," Adam said.
He then glanced at everyone sitting by the fire, then said in a solemn voice, "We’ll rest for the day here. I’ll leave this chamber at night and journey to the next one. When the sun rises tomorrow, Valerian will lead you there."
Koby said excitedly, "You said Kara is there, right? I mean, at our next stop."
"Indeed." Adam nodded. "I met up with her a couple of days ago. She’s doing fine."
He paused, then said with a dry smile, "Although she did try to scout through the mist and ended up getting lost. Luckily, she found herself in another underground hall."
"So tomorrow we go to Kara’s hiding place, rest there for the day, and then journey deeper into the secret plane, yes?" Genevieve asked in a grim voice.
"Yes." Adam nodded.
"That wall I mentioned, it’s only a few hours away from Kara’s hiding place. And for some odd reason, the dangers of this wasteland do not approach that wall."
"Do we scale the wall?" Michael asked quietly. "Or is there like an entrance?"
"There is an entrance," Adam said. "But I hadn’t had enough time to figure out how to get through it."
"We’ll figure something out!" Genevieve chimed in.
Adam turned to her and smiled. "That we will."
He then rose to his feet, adding, "Alright, then. All of you rest up. We leave this place tomorrow morning and rendezvous with Kara."
Once again, Darren walked to the corner of the hall, distancing himself from the rest of the group.
Michael and Koby found his behaviour strange, but neither tried to check up on him. It was obvious that Darren had been unfriendly to them in the past.
Valerian lay by the fire, watching the embers rise like fireflies. He was very satisfied with his efforts today. Adam had given him an important responsibility, and he had carried it out properly.
I did excellent! He mused, his tail swaying behind him.
Genevieve walked up to Adam, who was staring at the talisman hung by the entrance. She clasped her hands behind her back and just silently stood there beside him.
Seeing that she had no intention to strike up a conversation, Adam was a little amused. He cast a sideways glance at her and said with an arched brow, "What?"
Genevieve shrugged, smiling faintly. "Nothing."
Adam chuckled. He returned his gaze to the talisman and began studying it.
Unlike the other talismans he had seen, this one was turned outward, revealing its opposite side. Etched upon its surface was a celestial sphere split cleanly in two. One half depicted a blazing sun, the other a pale moon.
The sun and the moon, he thought.
And one hundred and eight lines forming a circle on the other side.
What does it all mean?
How is the talisman preventing the monsters from coming inside?
"What next?" Genevieve said suddenly.
"Excuse me?" Adam turned to her with an inquisitive gaze.
"What next after arriving at the wall you saw?" she asked.
Adam looked at her deeply, then smiled.
"I don’t know," he said. "We’ll see when we get there."
"What I mean is..." Genevieve’s expression suddenly turned somber.
She said the next words through [Mind Whisper]:
’I’m beginning to see why no one who set foot inside this secret plane was able to come out,’ she continued.
’If there’s a secret plane, then there has to be a plane spirit. What if the spirit is preventing the Magi and Paladin from escaping? What if... there’s no way out?’
Adam was a little surprised that Genevieve spoke so discreetly. But listening to her words, he understood why.
He replied mentally, his voice calm and reassuring:
’Don’t overthink. If there’s a way in, there has to be a way out.’
He looked her in the eye and smiled.
’There’s always a way,’ he said.
Genevieve fell silent as she gazed into Adam’s tenebrous eyes.
She had never seen eyes so dark before.
Yet unlike Darren, who saw only terror in them, Genevieve found them strangely tranquil. They reminded her of the stillness of night, a quiet darkness that gently lulled one to sleep.
Realizing that she had been staring for too long, she looked away and turned her attention to the talisman instead.
"The Guiding Star," she whispered in a slightly teasing voice.
"Hmm?" Adam arched a brow.
"Nothing." Genevieve shook her head, then turned and walked away.
The smile on her face gradually faded away.
After hearing Adam’s words just now, listening to Valerian’s story over the past few days, and recalling the existence of the Constantine constellation in the night skies of Myrrandor, an overwhelming feeling washed over her.
It felt like...
Divine providence.
It was nothing more than a feeling with no evidence to support it. Yet she couldn’t shake the sense that some immense, inexorable purpose was beginning to reveal itself to her.
As though unseen hands from the past had been quietly weaving countless threads together, only for them to converge at this very moment.
The thought lingered in her mind long after she had dismissed it as absurd.
