Chapter 1937: Lone Wolf

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

"Captain..."

One of the elves couldn’t help but grow uneasy.

"What do we do?" The other elf asked, tone filled with barely suppressed panic.

Genevieve silently observed their reactions, her face calm and composed. Though inwardly, she couldn’t help but wonder.

Why are they so afraid of him? He has yet to show any hostility toward us.

There must be something about this Lone Wolf that I do not know.

She turned to Michael, hoping to gauge his reaction.

She knew that his instincts were unusually sharp when it came to judging the threat posed by a person or monster. She still remembered what he had said about Adam while they were traveling to Kinran Valley.

’Don’t let his friendly demeanor fool you, Genevieve,’ he had said. ’Adam is the most dangerous person I have met!’

When she turned to Michael and saw his reaction, her eyes narrowed.

Michael seemed visibly shaken by the arrival of this newcomer!

"Hey," she called out to him in a low voice. "Is everything okay?"

Michael gulped and subconsciously took a step closer to Genevieve and behind Leah.

"That man..." he began.

"He’s dangerous!"

"That he is," Leah said in a grim voice. "None of you are to speak to him."

She turned to the two elves in her group and added firmly. "Especially you two."

Leah turned back to the newcomer on the other side of the street and continued, "Let me do all the—"

Her words got caught in her throat.

The Lone Wolf had disappeared.

"H-He just vanished!" One of the elves, who had had his eyes on him all this while, blurted out.

The group looked around, trying to find the man’s presence. But they were unsuccessful.

"He’s fast!" Michael couldn’t help but exclaim.

He turned to Leah and asked incredulously, "What’s a Templar Paladin like him doing out here in the city? I don’t think I’ve seen or even heard of him in the City Hall."

Leah smiled wryly.

"That’s because he doesn’t live in the City Hall," she said. "And he’s not a Templar."

Michael’s eyes slowly widened.

"He’s a Cavalier like us," Leah added.

"Why doesn’t he live in the City Hall?" Genevieve couldn’t help but ask.

"He got off on the wrong foot with the higher-ups," Leah said. "It happened a little more than a year ago. He’s been living alone in the city ever since. That’s why we call him the Lone Wolf."

"Alone?" Genevieve’s eyes narrowed.

"So it is possible to live by yourself in the city," she added.

Her thoughts immediately drifted to Adam. If someone like the Lone Wolf could live independently in the city, then by all means, Adam could too.

"He’s an anomaly," Leah said, turning to her.

"There have been many in the past who believed themselves capable of surviving alone in the city," she continued. "None managed to live past a month. Most don’t realize how dangerous it is to live in the city compared to the City Hall."

Genevieve couldn’t help but lightly frown at that statement. But she quickly adjusted her expression and politely said, "I understand."

In her heart, however, she knew Adam was not like the others. If there’s anyone who could survive alone in the city, it would be him.

And this Lone Wolf, apparently, she mused.

The horde of wolves soon disappeared around the corner.

"Let’s go," Leah instructed. "Keep your guard up at all times. We’re entering dangerous territory now."

The group silently followed behind her.

From the corner of her eyes, Genevieve couldn’t help but notice how the two elves appeared drastically more uneasy since the Lone Wolf’s sudden appearance.

I wonder why they’re so scared of him, she mused.

She secretly observed Leah and noticed that her captain didn’t seem to be all that shaken.

How curious...

Dust rose silently inside a dilapidated courtyard, the signs of battle fresh.

Adam stood amid three corpses, all of them belonging to Rank 2 mutated ghouls.

Despite having to deal with only three of these creatures, his body was riddled with claw marks — especially his back and chest.

Adam’s didn’t let it show on his face, however. He barely felt the pain anymore.

He stretched his back lazily as he willed the mana to heal his injuries.

"I still feel very rusty," he said, stretching his arms. "And miserably weak!"

"Brother, do you think we can eat these monsters?" Valerian asked curiously as he sniffed the ghoul corpses.

"Definitely not!" Adam grimaced.

These monsters looked way too much like humans for him to even consider eating them.

"Mm?" Valerian blinked. "Why, though? I bet they’ll be nutritious."

"No!" Adam chided him. "We’ll go look for wolves or something. These were for practice. And clothes."

He bent over and yanked the trousers off one of the corpses. After casting a minor cleaning spell, he put them on. "Thank goodness, it fits."

"No shirt for you!" Valerian shook his head. "You tore or destroyed all of them."

"It’s fine as long as I cover my private parts," Adam said casually. "It was getting awkward moving around."

"Brother, look! I think these boots might fit you."

"Oh, nice one, Val!"

"Myu!"

After looting whatever they could, the brothers prepared to leave.

"Remove the sound-cancellation barrier," Adam said, his eyes suddenly narrowing. "And come here."

Valerian dove into Adam’s arms, nestling comfortably. Then, with a wave of his paw, the air shimmered faintly, and the invisible barrier came undone.

Adam waited in the courtyard for a few moments.

Valerian looked up at him and murmured, "What’s the matter?"

Adam silently circulated mana inside his body. He didn’t answer Valerian. Instead, he turned around ever so slightly and glanced toward the terrace of the two-story building behind him.

"What are you, a stalker or something?"

Valerian’s eyes slowly widened. Without another word, he turned into a flash of gray light and disappeared inside Adam’s spirit sea.

The midday sun behind him cast muted rays over the tall, imposing figure standing at the edge of the terrace, looking at Adam through curious grey eyes.

He was bare-chested, with a wolf hide draped across his shoulders.

"So it was you," said the Lone Wolf.

"Come again?" Adam quirked a brow, fully turning around to face the stranger.

The newcomer’s next words made his expression stiffen.

"It was you, the one who caused a commotion last week and escaped the sun temple."

The Lone Wolf’s lips curled into a grin, revealing a row of sharp white teeth.

"Wasn’t it?"
