Chapter 1938: Unwavering Truth

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Although Adam did not show it on his face, he felt a sense of danger from this man standing on the terrace.

The man radiated no hostility, yet the threat was unmistakable.

It was the aura of someone who had survived countless life-and-death battles. An aura forged through victory after victory.

It seemed to proclaim a single, unwavering truth:

No matter what happens... I will win!

How did Adam recognize this aura?

It was because he, too, radiated the very same one.

Just as Adam had sensed it from the man, the man, too, had sensed it from Adam.

The Lone Wolf couldn’t help but break into a wide grin.

It was a feeling that not even the so-called leaders of the City Hall had ever managed to evoke in him.

He took a casual step forward and plummeted from the edge of the rooftop, landing calmly in the courtyard. Then he walked toward the raven-haired youth with confident strides and stood half a dozen steps away from him.

"How did you do it?" he asked. "How did you escape that zealous monster?"

Adam calmly looked at him and shrugged. "Don’t know what you’re talking about."

"Don’t lie now." The Lone Wolf’s eyes narrowed.

"I saw through that illusion your little pet wove that night. That cat earlier, it should be the winged panther, yes?"

Adam’s eyes narrowed, his dark pupils flashing with a sharp light.

"So how did you do it?" The Lone Wolf asked eagerly.

Even someone like him had to avoid the sun temple, wary of how the Antlered High Priest might react.

But here was Adam, a fellow human, who had not only survived almost a week of torture, but also managed to escape from that sick place.

To say that he was fascinated would be an understatement.

The Lone Wolf’s gaze swept over Adam’s exposed upper body. His brows furrowed lightly when he looked at all the scars.

"I’m surprised you’re even alive," he said, his voice low and contemplative.

He then matched Adam’s gaze and asked again, "So, tell me! How did you do it?"

Adam studied the youth, trying to understand what it was that he wanted. He couldn’t help but ask, "Why are you so interested?"

"Well," The Lone Wolf began, spreading his arms. "I would try to do the same if I ever got trapped in that temple. I hear it’s full of treasures."

The corner of Adam’s lips twitched.

What an idiot!

He waved his hand dismissively and said, "Go ask the folks at the City Hall how to survive the sun temple."

The Lone Wolf sneered. "Fuck the City Hall."

Adam’s brows rose in surprise. "You’re not with the City Hall?"

The Lone Wolf spat on the ground in disgust. "I would never affiliate myself with those bastards."

"Why?" It was Adam’s turn to be curious.

"I’ll answer your question after you answer mine."

Adam fell silent.

Suddenly impatient, the Lone Wolf demanded, "I was considerate enough not to disturb your rest at the portrait house. I waited for you to come out. So, tell me!"

Adam’s lips curled into a dangerous smile.

"It’s a good thing you didn’t disturb my sleep. I would have killed ya."

The Lone Wolf blinked.

People rarely threatened him. If they did, they hardly lived past to see another sunrise.

But this... this was very interesting to him.

His lips curled into a wild grin. "You think you can take me on?"

"You wanna try?" Adam didn’t back down.

Although he did need to play his cards carefully. He was in a severely weakened state right now. If he were to fight the man in his current state, the odds were... it would end badly for him.

At the same time, he couldn’t afford to show fear.

From experience, Adam knew that people like this were difficult to deal with. They respected strength above all else. Show even the slightest hint of weakness, and they would immediately seize the initiative. They would press harder, probe every weakness, and dictate the pace of the encounter.

No. If he wanted to leave this conversation on his own terms, then from the very first word, he had to convince the Lone Wolf that he was standing before an equal.

They glared at each other for several long moments. It even seemed that the two would explode into a brutal dance of fists and blood.

But suddenly, the Lone Wolf arched his head back and let out a belly laugh.

Adam secretly heaved a sigh of relief. He truly did not want to get into a difficult fight given his current condition.

"You are all right!" The Lone Wolf grinned.

He crossed his arms as he studied Adam once again.

"But I wouldn’t fight you now. It would not be fun. Perhaps, when you’ve recovered."

He paused for a moment, then proposed, "Want to eat?"

"Huh?" Adam thought he had heard wrong.

Was the brute really inviting him for a meal after all of that?

"Follow me to my hideout," said the Lone Wolf. "We’ll eat, we’ll drink, and then we’ll speak about our exploits in this cursed realm!"

"Drink?" Adam perked up. "Drink what?"

The Lone Wolf gave him a strange look. "Ale, of course. What are you, a child?"

Adam laughed. "You should have started with that!"

The Lone Wolf followed and laughed together. He then looked at Adam and grinned, "What is your name?"

Adam stepped forward and offered a handshake.

"The name’s Constantine," he said. "Adam Constantine."

The Lone Wolf couldn’t help but subconsciously glance at the giant scar on Adam’s wrist. He looked away and tightly clasped Adam’s hand.

He grinned and introduced himself:

"I am called Luca."

"Just Luca?" Adam asked curiously.

"...Just Luca."

Adam studied the towering man, who stood a full head taller than him. After a moment, he nodded.

"Just Luca it is, then."

"Come!" Luca slapped Adam’s shoulders. "We shall feast tonight! I have all kinds of monster meat!"

Adam’s lips twitched again. "Sure. After you."

They scaled the building together. Then they vaulted from one rooftop to the next as Luca guided Adam through the monster-infested urban maze.

It was only afterward that Adam realized that Luca’s invitation hadn’t been a spur-of-the-moment decision.

It had been deliberate.

Luca already knew where Adam’s hideout was. By bringing Adam to his own, he was showing that trust went both ways.

The Lone Wolf, it seemed, possessed more than just brawn.
