"Are you a masochist?"Luca sat with his back against the wall, casually tearing off a piece of roasted meat from the bone.
Across the hall sat Adam and Valerian, a little distance in between.
The little fellow perked up. He looked at Luca and asked innocently, "What is a masochist?"
"Erm..." The Lone Wolf suddenly felt a little awkward.
By all signs, Valerian behaved like a child despite his ferocious panther transformation. So then, would it be okay for him to explain to a child what a masochist truly meant?
He cleared his throat and said, "It’s someone who enjoys pain."
Valerian blinked. Then he vigorously nodded. "Yes! Brother is that! He’s always hurting. I think he likes it!"
Adam gently shoved the little fellow’s head into the food laid before him. "Shut up and eat."
"Grr!" Valerian turned to Adam, displaying faux annoyance. But he found that monster meat tasted very good, so he quickly shifted his attention back to the food.
Meanwhile, Adam continued to eat the monster meat that Luca had provided. It needed a bit of seasoning, but he wouldn’t complain. It was better than no food. And he needed food at the moment.
Of course, he still didn’t fully trust his new companion and made sure that the food wasn’t poisonous before letting Valerian eat it.
And judging by the distance between the two parties, it was clear that Luca did not trust him either.
This was much better than the man suddenly acting so friendly with him. That would suggest Luca was either stupid or he was scheming.
Adam did not think the Lone Wolf was an idiot.
"I have a high pain tolerance," he replied.
Luca accepted that answer. He took another big bite of roasted meat, then asked, "How did you draw the other monsters to the sun temple? I’ve never seen the wicked Pupeteer come anywhere near the temple before."
Adam carefully studied the Lone Wolf’s expression and body language.
Just why is he so interested?
He couldn’t help but wonder, Does he truly wish to only study my tactics in case he ever gets trapped in the sun temple?
If so, he’s either a fool or a very cautious individual.
"I had an expendable artifact with me," he casually lied. "It turns the monsters in the vicinity into a state of mindlessness. They turn berserk and are drawn by it."
Luca paused eating, his grey eyes gleaming.
A few moments later, he asked, "You said you were pinned to the wall. And that the high priest rarely left the dungeon. So how did you manage to use that artifact?"
"I had Val’s help," Adam replied without hesitation.
"Mm?" Valerian looked at him curiously. But he was wise enough not to ruin his big brother’s net of lies. So he nodded.
"I see. I see." Luca nodded, intrigued.
He thought for a long time, then said in approval. "Very resourceful, I must admit."
Adam smoothly changed the subject.
"What’s this about treasure? You mentioned something about the sun temple containing a lot of treasure?"
"You didn’t know?" Luca quirked a brow as he resumed eating. "I assumed that’s why you were foolish enough to enter the sun temple in the first place."
The corner of Adam’s lips twitched.
"I was... trying to find a place to stay for the night," he said awkwardly. "I didn’t think I’d be in so much trouble."
Luca cast him a strange look.
"Everyone knows the sun temple is a forbidden zone," he said. "Wait a minute. When did you arrive in this secret plane?"
"Less than two months ago," Adam answered.
"Ah." The Lone Wolf nodded in understanding.
"Well, now you know," he added. "Also, the castle by the lake is a forbidden zone. There’s a powerful knight who is a Templar Paladin."
"There’s another one?" Adam’s eyes narrowed.
Luca nodded. "I fought the monster once. He gave me this scar. Look."
He pointed at the long scar running across his right shoulder bone and up his neck. The man looked somewhat proud to display it, as though he was showing off a trophy.
"I wanted to test his prowess, so I headed to the castle," Luca said, tearing off another large piece of meat.
"But he’s got an impenetrable armor on, that bastard! Decent spear skills too. Fortunately, the monster never leaves the throne room. So I managed to escape."
Adam was a little speechless. He was slowly beginning to understand Luca’s personality.
"So you only need to be wary of these three," he continued.
"I would say, in terms of fighting prowess, the Knight trumps the other two. But it also poses the least threat since it never leaves the castle. Between the High Priest and the Puppeteer, things get a little dicey. I feel like the former is more powerful, but the latter is more tricky to deal with."
Adam nodded, silently filing away this precious intel. He had almost paid with his life because of his lack of information about this city.
"I appreciate it," he said sincerely.
He thought for a moment, then asked, "So just these three in the city? I thought there would be a lot more Rank 2 monsters, to be honest."
"Oh, there are." Luca nodded, burping unceremoniously.
He retrieved a flask of ale and gulped several mouthfuls before continuing, "But most live in the woods beyond the city walls. And from what I’ve gathered, many more dangerous monsters live beyond the mountains."
Adam’s eyes narrowed. He took away several important points from Luca’s words just now. But the one thing he couldn’t help but be curious about was:
"You seem to have traveled far beyond these walls. Do you... have a way of getting out of the city?"
"Hmm?" Luca blinked. "Obviously. How else would I leave the city?"
"Is it the tunnels?"
Luca sneered. "Those bastards hold a twisted monopoly over the secret tunnels. They’ve refused me passage several times!"
Whenever he spoke about the City Hall, his voice dripped with contempt.
"I’ve found my own way of travel beyond the city walls," he said proudly.
"Over them."
