Dorian’s claws were a moment away from piercing Adam’s skull.
He could see it — the eyes exploding, the skull shattering, and grey matter spraying in every direction. Just the thought of doing that to his brother’s killer filled his mind with euphoria.
But what he envisioned did not come to pass.
Before Dorian could kill Adam, his vision was suddenly engulfed in blinding grey light. A moment later, he felt his claws slam against something hard and impenetrable. Instantly, he felt the bones in his finger crack.
And that wasn’t all. Just moments later, a vicious maw clamped down on his neck, its sharp teeth threatening to tear out his throat!
It had all happened too quickly for Dorian to react. Thankfully, the creature’s fangs seemed incapable of piercing his flesh.
Enraged and startled, Dorian grabbed hold of the creature that had suddenly appeared out of nowhere and violently slammed it to the ground.
A whimper escaped the beast’s maw, and it was only then that Dorian realized what, or rather, who it was.
"It’s you!" he growled angrily.
Sprawled on the ground before him was the panther that he had seen accompany Adam.
Valerian scrambled to his feet and quickly positioned himself in front of Adam. His topaz eyes blazed with bloodlust, though hints of fear remained within them. He bared his sharp teeth and snarled.
His intent was clear: he would not let anyone hurt his brother.
Dorian’s cracked fingers quickly healed. The moment they did, he pounced on Valerian.
At the same time, Valerian fearlessly lunged at him as well. But Dorian effortlessly evaded the armored panther’s attack and unleashed a barrage of vicious punches. This time, he was careful not to use his bare nails.
Valerian grimaced in agony as blow after blow hammered into him, though his scales absorbed most of the force.
Even so, within a few short moments, Dorian had brutally beaten the beast to the ground.
Several dents marred Valerian’s armor, his limbs were twisted at unnatural angles, and blood pooled from the corner of his mouth. Yet despite the tremendous force of Dorian’s attacks, not a single one of his scales had broken.
"Damn you!" Dorian roared, his attention now completely shifted to Valerian. "Just what kind of beast are you?!"
His gaze then drifted to the blood dripping from the corner of Valerian’s mouth. The moment Dorian looked at the blood and sensed the immense mana radiating from it, his pupils constricted.
In that moment, he knew that Valerian was no ordinary beast.
Something primal stirred within Dorian. His mouth began to water as an overwhelming urge seized him. His instincts screamed at him to consume Valerian’s blood.
Kill the beast!
Drink its blood!
Drain it dry!
Those words repeated inside Dorian’s mind relentlessly. The thought was so powerful that, for a moment, it drowned everything else.
Meanwhile, Valerian was so weak and battered that he could no longer maintain his transformation.
His massive body began to shrink. The scales receded, the armor-like plates vanished, and within moments, the formidable beast had reverted to the form of a small cat.
He looked utterly miserable. He had never been in such a pitiful state before. His tiny body trembled, and tears welled up in his topaz eyes as he stared helplessly in Adam’s direction.
Then, almost instinctively, he sent a weak mental transmission.
Brother... I’m scared...
When those words echoed inside Adam’s mind, he felt as though his heart had exploded inside his chest.
Valerian had disobeyed him and started fighting the vampire. Adam knew that, with Valerian’s fighting prowess, he would have no problem fighting foes an entire rank stronger than him. But Dorian wasn’t just any foe.
And just as Adam had feared, the vampire had beaten his little brother to an inch of his life. And all Adam could do was stare helplessly as he desperately tried to get rid of the toxins coursing through his body.
And when those words echoed through Adam’s mind, something inside him snapped.
That was the final straw.
Never in his life had he experienced such overwhelming wrath.
It was primal, absolute, and all-consuming.
A fury so profound that it seemed capable of shattering the very world around him.
His anger had reached a point beyond reason.
In that moment, Adam saw nothing but red.
Dorian, completely mesmerized by the quality of Valerian’s blood, had nothing else in his mind. If his mind was even remotely aware of his surroundings, he would have noticed how the very air around Adam had begun to twist and distort.
Instead, he continued to walk toward Valerian, completely consumed by his hunger for blood.
"Dorian, behind you!!"
It was only when the other vampire roared in alarm that Dorian finally snapped back to his senses.
Suddenly, Dorian’s back was drenched in cold sweat. He had this strange feeling that countless swords had pierced his body. He had never felt such a thick killing intent before.
He abruptly turned around, facing the source of this unbelievable bloodlust.
And what he saw frightened him.
Adam stood perfectly still, his hands hanging loosely by his side. His aura had flared so violently that the scenery behind him appeared completely distorted, warped by the sheer force of his presence.
And his eyes...
Dorian subconsciously took several steps back.
Another primal instinct surged from the depths of his being. It screamed at him that he was no longer the predator.
The human standing before him, with those cold, murderous eyes, was the true apex predator!
Every instinct in Dorian’s body screamed the same command:
RUN.
The other vampire had also astutely recognized Adam’s threat level. He knew that if he were to face Adam at this moment, he would surely meet his end.
He was finally beginning to realize why Dorian had feared this human so much even before coming here.
But this was ridiculous!
Was that truly the aura of a mere Mana Core Magus?!
He carefully weighed his options. Genevieve lay beside him, knocked unconscious and bound with rope. He could seize the human and flee. He would still have completed his mission.
On the other hand, if he chose to ally with Dorian and fight Adam, their chances did not look particularly promising.
In the blink of an eye, he made his decision.
He would wait for the right opportunity, seize Genevieve, and run for his life.
But just as he had made his decision, Adam moved.
He simply vanished from his spot.
A gust of wind swept past Dorian, and he shuddered violently. He instinctively looked down, checking that he was still alive.
Then, from the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of Adam crouching on the ground right beside him.
Dorian’s heart leapt into his throat.
When did he...
