Adam had completely ignored Dorian’s existence. All that mattered to him was Valerian. He crouched beside his little brother and carefully examined his injuries, exercising as much patience as his fury would allow.
There were heavy bruises covering much of Valerian’s body, but thankfully, Adam could find no signs of internal injuries. The worst were his twisted limbs, though even those could be healed given enough time.
Valerian was still conscious. His topaz eyes looked up at Adam, filled with pain and fear, as though silently pleading with him.
He weakly murmured, "I’m sorry, Brother... I just... wanted to help you..."
Adam felt his heart shatter when he heard those words. He was so furious.
Not at Valerian, of course.
But at himself.
"Can you enter?" he asked.
Valerian’s lips trembled, and he weakly nodded. "Myu..."
And just like that, in a flash of grey light, he was gone.
Meanwhile, Dorian stood frozen just a few meters behind him. Forget moving, the vampire hadn’t even dared to breathe.
Adam finally rose to his feet. He turned his body ever so slightly, his gaze locking onto Dorian.
"You will pay for this."
Even before the last of his words had escaped his lips, Adam had vanished once again.
Dorian tried to dodge, but against Adam, who seemed to have abandoned all reason, it was utterly futile. He felt one hand clamp around his hand, and another seize his face.
Crack!
His wrist and jaw shattered simultaneously.
Then, with a feral look on his face, Adam opened his mouth wide and—
CHOMP!
His teeth sank into Dorian’s neck. With a savage jerk of his head, Adam tore through flesh and muscle, ripping open the vampire’s throat.
Dorian’s eyes widened in shock, and he watched it happen. No sound escaped his lips. All he could manage were painful, strangled gurgles.
Adam finally released him.
The vampire stumbled backward before collapsing to the ground. His hands desperately flew to his neck, desperately trying to staunch the bleeding.
Adam watched his struggle with wrathful eyes. He spat the torn flesh from his mouth and let it fall to the ground.
Then his lips curled into a wide, cruel grin.
He straddled Dorian’s stomach and leaned over.
A maniacal laugh escaped Adam’s throat as he raised both hands and drove his thumbs toward Dorian’s eyes.
Along with Adam’s laughter, Dorian’s soundless screams tore through the night.
The vampire flailed wildly, trying desperately to free himself from Adam’s grip. But no matter how much he struggled, the man simply wouldn’t budge.
Instead, Adam’s thumbs dug deeper into his eyes, while the rest of his fingers clenched viciously against the sides of his skull.
All the while, Adam laughed and laughed and laughed.
He raised his head, caught the horrified gaze of the other vampire, and continued laughing like a man who had finally lost all semblance of sanity.
The other vampire had already seized Genevieve and was preparing to flee. But when he saw what Adam was doing to Dorian, he froze in unprecedented terror.
Then his eyes met Adam’s.
The mad gleam in them sent a violent shudder through his body. For a moment, he nearly dropped his hostage.
He forced himself to turn away and ran. He ran as fast as his legs could carry him, desperate to put as much distance between himself and that monster as possible.
He had only taken a few steps when he suddenly heard the ominous sound of bones shattering and muscles squelching, followed by a dreadful silence.
He didn’t need to turn around to see what had happened.
Dorian had been butchered in the most violent manner imaginable.
The other vampire gritted his teeth and pushed himself to run even faster. No matter what, he had to escape this forest and reach the mountains. Once he crossed the mountain pass, he was sure his allies would notice him. And with his speed, he was confident he could outrun the monster.
But he had gravely miscalculated.
In the blink of an eye, Adam had already caught up to him through pure physical speed alone. Not that Adam could use hastening magic at the moment, anyway. His mind was anything but calm and practical to cast spells.
The vampire barely had time to react before Adam struck. He hastily twisted his body aside, narrowly dodging the first blow. The second came immediately after.
Boom!
The attack struck true. The vampire’s legs gave out beneath him, and he crashed to the ground, his grip on Genevieve breaking as her unconscious body tumbled onto the earth.
Adam continued to laugh sinisterly as he ignored the woman and slowly walked toward his enemy.
Meanwhile, the vampire covertly concealed his hands and prepared a spell. Then, in one final burst of desperation, he turned and hurled all the magic he could muster.
[Black Crescent Blades]
Crescent-shaped blades of black energy tore through the air toward Adam. But he didn’t even bother to dodge.
One blade after another slammed into his body. The vampire watched in disbelief as the attacks carved deep wounds into Adam’s flesh, blood pouring freely from the gaping injuries.
Yet Adam continued walking. He didn’t slow down. He didn’t even flinch.
He simply kept advancing, laughing as though the blades were nothing more than a minor inconvenience.
The vampire’s expression turned into one of sheer horror.
Then the final blade was hurled.
Adam rushed forward with frightening speed, and in the next instant, he was already upon him.
With overwhelming force, Adam slammed the vampire to the ground and pinned him there. He gripped the vampire’s throat with one hand, then raised the other to deliver a punch.
Stab!
Adam paused.
He looked down and saw a dagger protruding from his chest, having pierced through his flesh and slipped between his ribs before sinking into his lung.
His gaze followed the hand gripping the blade.
The vampire stared back at him with a pale face, full of fear, terror, and desperation.
The next moment, Adam laughed and brought his fist down.
Bam! Bam! Bam!
The vampire desperately twisted the blade inside Adam’s lung, hoping it would force him to back away. However, Adam continued hammering his fist into the vampire’s face.
Again and again and again.
Soon, the vampire’s strength gave out. His hand went limp and fell to the ground, but the dagger remained embedded deep into Adam’s chest.
Adam continued punching.
Only when the vampire’s skull had been completely shattered, his brain reduced to bloody pulp, and Adam’s fist began striking the blood-soaked grass beneath him did he finally stop.
He raised his head and took a deep breath. His lips curled into a wide smile. His dark eyes reflected the crimson moon in the night sky, along with a deep sense of grief and helplessness.
In the distance, he could feel the monsters coming out of their hiding places.
Then, suddenly, an ethereal voice, bright and melodious like that of a skylark, echoed in the air.
"Isn’t the moon so lovely?"
Adam slowly turned his head. His gaze settled on a woman with snow-white hair and beautiful crimson eyes. She wore a flowing black gown and sat on the branch of a tree, curiously observing him.
"I must admit," Sandra said with a light smirk. "You are crazy."
In the next moment, she vanished like a specter.
Before Adam could react, she reappeared behind him, a blade of conjured blood in her hand.
Then, she drove the blade straight through Adam’s chest.
