Chapter 1990: Personal Journal

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Adam’s consciousness returned to the outside world.

He stood silently for a few long seconds, trying to understand the severity of what had just transpired.

The key was mysterious, yes. The Lotus hadn’t deemed it a threat to him, yes.

But the only thing that stumped him was one question:

Why?

Unable to find the answer to that, as well as the true purpose of the key, Adam shook his head and sighed again.

As long as it’s not harmful to me, he thought as he stroked his beard.

He truly disliked things he could not understand. Especially if said things now resided inside his mind. But as long as the Lotus was there, he was certain about one thing - his spirit sea would remain protected. He had at least that much faith in the divine artifact.

Adam decided to put the matter to the back of his mind for now. He could contemplate the key’s mysteries later, when he had the time and luxury to do so.

For the moment, there were more immediate matters to investigate.

He walked over to the large desk and began searching through its contents.

To his surprise, he found several books that were still in remarkably decent condition. Unlike the other objects scattered across the room, these records had somehow survived the passage of time with their pages and bindings largely intact.

Adam picked up the first one and flipped through it. They were records of the temple’s daily affairs.

Priests would normally keep such records to maintain an account of everything that happened within a temple.

There were entries concerning offerings made by worshippers, donations and tributes received by the temple, expenditures on repairs and supplies, inventories of sacred objects and materials, records of ceremonies and rituals, and even notes concerning important visitors who had passed through the temple.

There were also records of the priests themselves, their duties, rotations, absences, and various matters concerning the day-to-day operation of the temple.

In other words, these books were essentially the temple’s history written through the mundane details of its daily existence.

Adam’s eyes gradually narrowed.

This might be more useful than I expected.

If he wanted to understand what had happened to the Sun Temple, these records could potentially provide him with clues that even the ruins themselves could not.

He first cast a defensive and concealment spell at the doorway, just to be safe should anything happen. Despite just gaining new strength, Adam was cautious as ever.

Then he finally began studying all the records.

Adam spent nearly an hour carefully studying the records, and by the time he finished, he had uncovered a surprising amount of information.

According to the older entries, the Sun Temple had existed for an extraordinarily long time. The exact date of its construction was unknown, but judging from the records, Adam estimated that it had been established roughly two thousand years ago.

During that distant era, this region had belonged to the Valouis Kingdom. Adam noted that this information was in line with what Isabella — the woman in the painting — had said to him.

The people of the kingdom had primarily worshipped two deities - the sun god and the moon goddess.

Adam’s gaze lingered on the records for a moment, his eyes narrowing.

So the sun god and the moon goddess had once been the primary faiths of this kingdom, he wondered.

But to think that these people would dare to worship these two when the God-Emperor exists. According to Luca, this would be considered the highest level of blasphemy.

The Sun Temple itself had been located in what was now known as Adventurers’ City. But that was not what caught Adam’s attention. According to the records, the city had once been known by another name.

The Royal Capital of Valcourrone.

Adam thought to himself, So Isabella really didn’t lie to me.

He turned another page.

The records concerning the moon goddess were considerably briefer. They mentioned that a Grand Temple dedicated to her once stood on the other side of the Lamiyan Mountain Range.

Adam paused.

The other side of the Lamiyan Mountain Range...

He recalled Sandra’s map, and the two spots marked with X. One of them turned out to be the Sun Temple.

Could the other one be the Moon Temple?

But why does she want me to go to these places?

His fingers tapped lightly against the page.

That was interesting.

The records did not provide much else. There were no detailed descriptions of the temple, no account of its current state, and no explanation for why the moon goddess’s temple had been built so far from the royal capital.

Still, the question remains... why did Sandra want me to visit this spot on the map?

Surely, she didn’t just want me to kill the werewolf. She could have done so herself. I have a feeling she is stronger than the werewolf was.

So why?

Adam scoured through several more books, carefully searching for anything that might shed light on the temple’s history. He wanted to know why he had been tasked to come here.

Then, while examining one of the drawers, his fingers brushed against something unusual.

He paused.

There was a hidden compartment concealed within the drawer. Adam carefully opened it and found a single book tucked inside.

Unlike the other records, this one contained no official markings. He opened it, and his eyes narrowed.

It was the personal journal of the High Priest!

With anticipation visible in his eyes, Adam began to read it.

The first few pages had been destroyed. On the next several, the ink had partially worn away, leaving only faint traces of what had once been written. But after that, the words became clear enough for Adam to make them out.

It was written in the same handwriting as the other books.

Adam’s eyes gleamed with a sharp light. He began reading the first entry.

But then he froze.

For several seconds, he simply stared at the sentence. The words were short, but the urgency behind them was unmistakable. Adam could clearly tell that the High Priest had written in fear.

The first entry read:

"The King has doomed us all!"
