Adam tucked the journal safely inside his pocket and exited the room.
After reading the journal entries, he felt a complicated mixture of emotions deep within his heart. It wasn’t the history of the secret plane that bothered him.
No. It was the identity of the creatures he had slain in this temple.
He glanced at the debris scattered across the floor and the remains of the Stone Angels he had just slain. Their shattered bodies lay motionless, their once-serene faces reduced to fragments of stone.
Adam had already devoured their souls, ensuring that there was no afterlife for them. The same held true for the High Priest’s soul.
And that was what made his feelings complicated.
According to the journal, these creatures had once been nothing more than innocent children. Choristers of the Sun Temple. Children who had sung praises to the sun god. Children who had smiled alongside the High Priest.
And yet, he had killed them.
More importantly, he had devoured their souls.
Adam remained silent for a long while, his gaze glued to the stone fragments. Then, slowly, his expression hardened.
There was no point dwelling on it.
The identity of the enemy did not matter. At the end of the day, they were just that - enemies. On the battlefield, there was no room for hesitation.
Either they died. Or he did.
He cast one last glance at the stone remains, then resolutely turned away and headed for the dungeon.
As he descended the cold stairs, Adam’s thoughts began piecing together the missing parts of the journal. It was fairly easy to fill in the gaps.
Based on his own understanding of the secret plane, the monsters he had encountered, and their connection to the Brand of Evil, he could roughly surmise what had truly happened.
Jacob and his army had been on the losing side. At the final moment of desperation, when defeat had become inevitable, Jacob must have sought power from the devils.
As a result, he won the war.
Adam’s eyes narrowed and he wondered, Perhaps that is how Jacob turned into a vampire?
He wasn’t certain about that part.
But one thing seemed clear. After making a deal with the devil, Jacob had won. The land had been cursed. Its people had mutated into monsters. The sun had hidden from sight. And the moon had turned blood red.
All because of those damned devils!
Adam arrived at the dungeon again.
His gaze fell upon the mutilated body of the High Priest that he had tortured. It lay there, dead and broken, stripped of his flesh.
Adam sighed.
He leaned against the wall, his gaze still fixed upon the corpse of the High Priest.
I didn’t think the High Priest and the person named Shireen were the ones who created the talismans, he wondered.
His expression grew even more complicated.
If not for them...
He fell silent for a moment.
So many people who entered this secret plane over the years would have died.
The thought weighed heavily on him.
It was because of the sacrifices made by the High Priest and the mysterious woman named Shireen that so many adventurers were still alive.
Adam remained silent for a long time, gazing at the mutilated corpse with a blank look in his eyes.
Soon, his brows furrowed and he wondered, But who is Shireen?
The journal had mentioned her several times, yet there was nothing else that could tell him who she was or what had happened to her.
And then there was the number.
108.
Adam’s eyes narrowed and he thought, What is the significance of that number?
There had to be some deeper meaning behind it.
He remembered the talismans. One side had a half-sun and half-moon carved into it, while the other bore a circle containing one hundred and eight lines.
What are they about?
Adam remained silent for a long while, his mind turning over the same questions.
The sun, the moon, and the number 108.
And the mysterious talismans created by the High Priest and Shireen.
Somehow, all of them were connected.
But how?
Adam’s thoughts returned to the final entry of the journal.
The basement. Remember the symbolism. 108. The Morning Star.
What the fuck is the Morning Star?
The High Priest must have left those words for a reason.
Adam immediately activated his Sphere of Resonance and thoroughly scanned the basement. There had to be a clue here.
The High Priest wouldn’t have deliberately led whoever found the journal down into this place during his final moments of sanity without reason. Before the curse had completely taken over his mind, he must have wanted the reader to find something here.
Something important.
And apparently, Sandra, too, knew the importance of this thing.
Adam’s senses swept across every corner of the basement. The walls, the floor, the ceiling. Nothing escaped his perception. Then, suddenly, his eyes narrowed.
His gaze shifted toward the far wall. He stared at it for several seconds before his expression changed slightly.
Recalling the talismans, Adam carefully examined the arrangement of the bricks. He could vaguely make out something peculiar. Several bricks had been placed slightly forward, forming a loose circle.
Without his heightened senses, he would have never noticed them.
Adam began counting. "One, two, three..."
His eyes gradually narrowed.
There were exactly 108 bricks!
"So that’s what you meant," he murmured.
He thought for a brief moment before raising his hand. A simple spell formed at his fingertip. One hundred and eight wind projectiles materialized in the air. They hovered silently before him, each one precisely aimed at one of the protruding bricks.
Adam carefully controlled his strength. He had no intention of destroying the wall. He only needed enough force to push the bricks inward. His fingers moved slightly, and the next instant—
Whoosh!
All 108 projectiles shot forward simultaneously.
Thud! Thud! Thud! Thud!
One after another, the bricks were pushed inward. For a brief moment, nothing happened.
Then, suddenly...
CLICK!
A faint mechanical sound echoed from within the wall. Something had been activated. The next moment, the entire wall began to tremble. Stone shifted against stone as a hidden mechanism had been triggered.
Slowly, the wall parted. Dust spilled from the cracks as a narrow opening appeared, revealing a small hidden space behind it.
Adam stared into the darkness beyond. The chest waiting for him inside did not escape his eyes. Anticipation flickered in his tenebrous eyes and he wondered:
Could it be inside?
Adam approached the ornate chest cautiously, his senses thoroughly examining every inch of the object. Finding nothing unusual, he reached out and slowly lifted the lid.
The moment it opened, Adam’s gaze fell upon the object resting inside.
A weapon.
It began with a heavy, leather-wrapped metallic hilt etched with runes. Extending from its handle was a long gleaming chain of thick, interlocking iron links. At its tip was a massive, solid iron orb covered in sharp, wedge-like spikes designed to fracture bone and tear through armor and flesh alike.
Adam stared at it for several seconds, his lips curling into a smile.
"So this is what Sandra and the High Priest wanted me to find," he murmured.
His fingers slowly reached toward the weapon. The moment they touched its hilt, a warm sensation spread through his body.
"The Morning Star!"
