Adam learned that the Morning Star was a powerful Grade 2 artifact. It was a whip-type weapon. At first glance, it appeared to be beautifully crafted. But its true power did not lie in its craftsmanship.
The Morning Star had been imbued with the power of the sun. That power was essentially the combination of fire and light magic, two forces that possessed an almost natural advantage against undead creatures.
And that made the artifact particularly terrifying within this secret plane. After all, the entire place was filled with undead.
The monsters, the mutated inhabitants, the countless creatures that wandered these cursed lands, all of them were beings that existed in opposition to the very magic contained within the Morning Star.
Against ordinary opponents, a Grade 2 artifact was already extraordinarily powerful.
But against the undead...
It was a natural bane. A weapon forged specifically to slaughter the very creatures that filled this cursed land.
As Adam climbed the stairs, he stared at the Morning Star fastened to his hip. His tenebrous eyes gleamed with understanding.
So that’s why they left this behind, he wondered.
The High Priest and Shireen, it seemed, had prepared properly before their minds and bodies gave in to the curse. The Morning Star was not merely a powerful weapon; it was a weapon meant for this secret plane.
When he came aboveground, he saw crimson light spilling through the crack in the dome. Not only that, he sensed several monsters around the temple. They must have realized that the Antlered High Priest and the Stone Angels were no more, or they wouldn’t have come anywhere this close.
He stood amid the broken pews and stared at the crimson moon visible through the dome. The shrieks and howls of monsters intensified, but he paid them no mind.
Adam glanced at the remains of the Stone Angels scattered on the ground with a bittersweet feeling in his heart.
With a simple hand seal, the ground beneath the rocky remains caved in. Another swipe of the hand, and they were buried underneath the earth.
Enemies they might have been, but at one point, they were once innocent little children.
Adam was not so heartless as to allow their remains to be consumed by the monsters in the city. In fact, he had even given the High Priest a burial in the dungeon below.
He had killed the Stone Angels. He had killed the High Priest.
Yes. At the time, he hadn’t thought much of it. They were his enemies, and they had tried to kill him. The High Priest even tortured him in this very dungeon.
Yet now that he knew the truth, Adam couldn’t help but feel a little differently.
They were once normal people, he thought.
The Stone Angels had once been children. The High Priest had once been a man who had devoted his life to protecting them. None of them had chosen to become monsters.
It had all begun with Jacob’s deal with the devils. If he were to go one step deeper, then the root of all this was King Louis’s greed and ambition.
Adam’s eyes flashed with a cold light.
Jacob had unleashed a curse upon the land, turning its inhabitants into the very monsters he had been fighting against. And Adam had been killing those monsters one after another.
And yet, when everything had finally settled down, when the anger had faded and the battle was over, he still couldn’t help but feel a little bad.
He let out a quiet sigh and thought to himself: In the end, none of them chose this fate.
He had simply encountered them as enemies. And enemies had to be killed. That was the reality of the world he lived in. But knowing the truth did not make the feeling any easier to bear.
Suddenly, the towering wooden doors shook.
Boom!
Something slammed into them from the other side.
Adam’s expression remained unchanged.
Boom!
The doors finally burst open, and a horde of monsters poured into the temple. Some came through the entrance, while others shattered the remaining windows and climbed inside. Their twisted forms crowded the ancient hall as they quickly surrounded Adam from every direction.
He glanced at them. Then he sighed.
He simply didn’t feel like fighting.
Not after everything he had just learned.
A faint fluctuation of mana spread from his body, and his dark eyes gleamed with a holy white light.
The monsters rushed toward him. Yet, the moment they reached his position, they simply walked around him as though he didn’t exist. None of them noticed him. None of them attacked. They simply passed by.
A simple application of illusion and enchantment magic.
Adam stood quietly among them, watching their distorted figures disappear deeper into the temple. He could have killed them all. It would have been very easy.
But he didn’t.
Not today.
After learning the truth behind this place, he simply didn’t feel like fighting anymore.
He silently walked out of the Sun Temple. All around him, the monsters raged. Yet none of them even cast a glance his way.
Watching the twisted and hideous forms of these creatures, he still couldn’t quite believe that they had once been normal people.
Just what kind of devious curse could bring about such an evil transformation?
When Adam thought of the legions of undead beyond the towering walls, the two sides that had been fighting each other for over two thousand years, he couldn’t help but begin to wonder just how deep the vampire king’s hatred ran.
Or perhaps, was everything solely for the bastard’s amusement?
Even after all these years, was Jacob de Vile still not satisfied?
He had destroyed both kingdoms and avenged his lover. So what more did he want?
Genevieve...
Adam clenched his fists subconsciously.
He didn’t know what she was going through. He didn’t even know if she was still alive. What he did know was that she was somehow very crucial for whatever ritual the vampire king was trying to conduct.
As he forlornly walked through the monster-infested streets of Adventurers’ City, he felt like he could hear the pained screams of the High Priest before he had turned into a werewolf.
The sun.
The moon.
And the 108...
