Chapter 2091: New Known Lord

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The Free City of Davos was bustling as it always was.

But today seemed special.

Today was the official swearing-in ceremony of the new Known Lord.

The crowd was jubilant. They had come from every corner of Davos to witness the occasion and welcome their new Known Lord.

She was already a beloved figure among the people of the city.

As the former Lady of the Sapphire Tower, the Witch of Davos was a famous personality, loved and respected by countless Davosians.

The Lord’s Borough was packed with people today. The streets were overflowing, with crowds gathered wherever they could find a place to stand. Cheers erupted whenever the new Known Lord appeared in their line of sight.

Some waved banners. Others called out her name. Children sat atop their parent’s shoulders, excited to catch a glimpse. And when the moment finally arrived, the entire borough fell into a reverent silence.

She raised her hand and began reciting the ancient vows. Her voice carried across the city. The crowd listened in silence. And when she finished, the city erupted in cheers. Applause rang out from every direction. The people of Davos celebrated their new Known Lord with genuine joy.

Amidst the enormous crowd, Adam and Genevieve held each other’s hands as they made their way forward. They squeezed through the sea of people until they finally found a clear position from which they could watch the ceremony.

Genevieve smiled as she looked toward the platform. She recognized a few faces. She leaned closer to Adam and whispered in his ear, loud enough for him to hear over the chatter of the crowd.

"That’s Emily Damon," she said. "The Witch of Davos. And also the former Lady of Sapphire Tower."

Adam glanced at the middle-aged lady, who was the center of attention on this day. He couldn’t help but ask, "How strong is she?"

"That’s your first question?" Genevieve was amused.

Adam shrugged.

"No one knows, really." Genevieve shook her head. "If I had to guess, probably an Elysian? Could be a Supreme. I’m not sure."

Rank 5 - Elysian Magus, Adam thought to himself solemnly.

Or maybe even a Rank 6 - Supreme Magus.

Antero Mortem was a Rank 4 - Saint Magus. And yet Voraxus had snapped his neck like a twig.

How powerful is Voraxus Somnia?

And what about Venis Somnia?

"What’re you thinking?" Genevieve gently pinched Adam’s cheek.

"How long it would take for me to reach their level," he answered.

Genevieve nodded. She pointed at the dark-skinned woman standing beside the new Known Lord.

"That’s the current Lady of the Sapphire Tower," she said. "Adeline Stark."

"You know her?" Adam asked.

"I’ve met her a few times." Genevieve nodded. "She’s got quite the temper."

She pointed at a few other notable people standing at the podium. Some worked in the government, others were nobles. They were powerful men and women of Davos.

However, there were no Unknown Lords present at the ceremony.

Except the Known Lord, the identity of the other rulers of Davos were a secret. Hence why they were called Unknown Lords.

Nobody knew who all of them were.

They could be a noble, a merchant, a beggar, or even a tavern owner. Any of them could secretly be a Lord.

Only the Known Lord acted publicly. They were the face of the government and diplomatic representative.

Adam could see a few advantages to keeping the identities of the Unknown Lords a secret.

For one, it would prevent assassinations. One cannot kill a ruler if they do not know who the ruler was. Second, it would prevent corruption to a large degree. Third, it would create an aura of paranoia. Every Davosian would have to be on their best behavior as they would be under the assumption that someone nearby could secretly be a Lord.

As the ceremony drew to a close, Genevieve pulled Adam away from the crowd and led him to a breakfast place. They hadn’t had dinner last night. All they did was lie side by side and watch the stars and moons. Adam could go on without food for a while, but Genevieve couldn’t.

Since they were already in Lords’ Borough, Genevieve took him to the teahouse that she frequented with her friends.

The Silver Kettle was a short walk from the Sapphire Tower. It was a comfortable and affordable place where students sat for hours with a pot of tea or coffee and their books.

Adam noticed how the staff at the teahouse were so warm and friendly toward Genevieve.

She’s quite the social butterfly, he thought with a smile.

Genevieve greeted several students — seniors and juniors at the Tower — and professors. All of them were in an ecstatic mood. After all, the Former Lady of the Tower was now the new Known Lord of the city. This was a wonderful day for the people of the Tower, and all of them were filled with pride.

The couple sat at a table by the window. Genevieve ordered breakfast for the two of them.

"So what’s the deal with the former Known Lord?" Adam asked over a cup of coffee. "I heard some rumors yesterday at the Rabbit Hole."

Genevieve nodded with a serious look on her face. "The rumors are true. Well, at least that’s what Professor Channing says, anyway."

She let out a soft sigh as she shook her head. "To embezzle millions of gold coins from the city... What does one even do with that much money?"

Nigel Norwood had served in the office of the Known Lord for almost a century. But only recently was he caught embezzling money directly from the funds meant to be used for the city. His scheme was uncovered by the government, and he had fled Davos to escape justice.

However, his accomplice hadn’t been so lucky...

"Are the rumors about Leto Morgan true as well?" Adam asked.

"I’m afraid so." Genevieve nodded. "I can’t believe someone of his reputation would get involved in a fraud of this magnitude. I saw him at the Rabbit Hole last night, you know. No wonder he looked so flustered."

Adam had met Leto once before. He had a good impression of the famed explorer and author. He had never expected the man to be involved in such a big scam.

"What are they planning to do with him?" he asked.

"Most likely, he’ll do some time at Fortune’s End," Genevieve replied.

"He has friends in high places, Adam. And so his punishment is lenient. Had it been anyone else... they would also have to pay the damages. Millions of gold, can you imagine it? But Leto would only be spending ten years or so in prison."

As the couple almost finished their breakfast, Adam suddenly said, "Oh, by the way. I’m moving to a new place."

"Where?" Genevieve was curious.

"Blue Borough."

"My, my." Genevieve teased. "Does my lover happen to be secretly wealthy?"

Adam didn’t call her out for referring to him as her lover. He felt a strange sensation in his heart. Something he’d never felt before. It was warm. He quite liked it.

He chuckled at her antics. "I just got lucky with that house."

"See!" Genevieve pointed out smugly. "It hasn’t even been a day since we’ve gotten together, and your luck has already turned around."

Genevieve, it seemed, had different sides to her as well. Adam had never seen her like this. She liked to joke and tease as much as she liked to appear to be polite and reserved.

"Perhaps," Adam said with a smile. "Want to come over and help me move in?"

Genevieve gasped playfully. "Whatever happened to taking things slow? Calling an innocent maiden over to your new home? Just the two of us in a big house? You beast!"

Adam let out a laugh. He footed the bill and soon they went their separate ways. Genevieve had some things to take care of at the Tower. Meanwhile, he had to visit 7 Dutton Street and settle his rental contract with the Staffords.

Genevieve agreed to come over to his new house later in the evening.

She was excited to learn that Adam had a surprise for her.

Though Adam was pretty sure they were thinking of two entirely different things.
