Chapter 2092: Life of an Adventurer

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Blue Borough was the wealthiest district in Davos.

The moment Adam entered the borough, he could immediately feel the difference. The streets were broader and cleaner, lined with beautiful parasol trees and patrolled by guards at regular intervals.

Most of the properties were enormous villas, each consisting of several buildings enclosed within sprawling compounds. This was a place reserved almost exclusively for wealthy and influential nobles and merchants.

Even the people reflected the wealth of the district. Men and women strolled through the streets dressed in lavish clothes, carrying themselves with grace and refinement.

The stores were no different. Their polished windows displayed expensive goods, and even the simplest of establishments seemed to reek of opulence.

Adam felt so out of place.

Just a couple of years ago, he was a slave on a pirate ship, living inside a cramped, dirty cabin. And today, he was suddenly the owner of a mansion in Blue Borough.

"Feels like a dream," he murmured as he arrived at 30 Faber Street.

It was a standalone mansion, unlike the other properties in the district. The house stood three stories tall, with a ground floor and two upper floors. Beneath it were two underground levels.

Everything remained exactly as it had been the night before. The previous owner hadn’t had time to move his belongings out.

How could he?

He was dead.

Adam arrived at the second underground level. He entered the old Magus’s lab—the very lab where Valerian was held captive.

Everything inside was the same. Nothing seemed to have been touched. Except Antero Mortem’s corpse was no longer there, and neither was his blood on the floor.

It was shocking how the Somnia siblings had gotten away with the murder of a Saint in the middle of the city. Adam believed they must have had help. If so, they were far more influential inside the city than he gave them credit for.

"I could turn this into my brewing lab," he murmured as he scanned the vast chamber.

The first underground level was a reinforced chamber meant for training and practicing mindfulness. The walls were thick and sturdy, designed to withstand the destructive force of magic.

The first floor contained the living room, dining room, and kitchen, along with the other necessities of everyday life. The second floor was devoted to guest rooms. A couple of spacious rooms occupied the level, each with its own furnishings and private bathing facilities. There was also a smaller seating area where one could relax away from the rest of the mansion.

The third floor was different. It consisted of one enormous room. It was a bedroom, study, and library all in one. Bookshelves lined the walls, while a large desk occupied one side of the room.

A comfortable bed rested near the far end, making the entire floor feel more like a private retreat than a conventional bedroom.

And then there was the balcony. It opened toward the west, overlooking the vast Sea of Storms.

Adam sat on the floor, hugging his knees as he gazed at the distant sea. He was all by himself inside this big mansion.

If Valerian was here, he would already have run several rounds through the mansion and exhausted himself by now.

If only he was here...

Adam’s lips curled into a sad smile. Deep down, he still felt hollow. And although he liked Genevieve and was grateful for her presence in his life, she couldn’t fill the gaping hole left behind by the absence of his little brother.

Tears came unbidden as he lowered his head and silently sobbed, thinking of all the times he had spent with sweet Valerian.

Recalling where he was, Adam cursed the dead Magus for the events of last night and for trying to manipulate his thoughts through Valerian’s amulet.

In a fit of rage, he burned and destroyed everything related to Antero Mortem. Sadly, he couldn’t find the old man’s personal vault or anything valuable inside the house—except for his research notes in his lab and the books in his personal library.

By the time he was done, the house was empty. Even the chair that Antero Mortem must have once sat on was disposed of by Adam.

Soon, night arrived. And so did his friends.

"Michael. Luca." Genevieve greeted them with a polite smile. Her playful self was only reserved for Adam. "I didn’t expect to see you both here."

"Adam didn’t tell you?" Michael replied absentmindedly as he looked around the empty house. "By the way, why does this place feel so gloomy?"

"Because I just burned away the lingering hatred and resentment of the bastard who previously lived here."

Adam’s voice echoed from the stairs. "Follow me."

He gestured for them to follow him to the third floor.

"Good view," Luca commented as he arrived at the balcony.

Genevieve curiously looked around the room, an expectant smile on her face. "So this is the bedroom," she murmured. "It’s spacious. Cool sea breeze from the west. Wonderful!"

"So, what’s up? Why did you call us here?" Michael found a spot on the floor and casually sat down.

Luca returned from the balcony and stood beside Adam. He already knew the reason why Adam had called them here. Meanwhile, Genevieve wandered the bedroom, humming a subtle tune as she thought of how to decorate the space. It definitely needed a woman’s touch. Her touch.

Adam smiled. "To distribute the loot, of course."

He waved his hands, and the next moment, items flew out from his sleeves one after another.

In the blink of an eye, the room was filled with all kinds of chests, weapons, armor, and books. Everything that Adam had ransacked from Castle de Vile.

Several wooden and metal chests were piled across the floor. Some were packed tightly together while others stood open, revealing treasures inside. Swords, daggers, staffs, and other weapons were scattered among suits of armor and various pieces of equipment. Hundreds of old books and parchments were stacked haphazardly in several places.

It was an absurd amount of treasure!

Adam had practically emptied the vault inside the remains of Castle de Vile.

Michael and Genevieve’s eyes widened as they took in the sheer quantity of treasures surrounding them. For a moment, they didn’t know what to say.

"All this..." Michael gulped. "It’s ours?"

Adam shrugged. "We’ll split it four ways. There’s more than enough for each of us."

Such was the life of an adventurer. They could walk a hundred roads and brave a hundred dangers, only to return with empty hands. Sometimes missing a few coins, sometimes missing a few limbs, and sometimes never returning at all.

Yet all it took was a single mission. A single stroke of fortune. And the same adventurer who had spent years struggling to survive could suddenly find himself richer than he knew how to spend.

That was the gamble. That was the allure.

That was the life of an adventurer.
