Carina was the second-largest moon of Myrrandor.
Its diameter was almost five thousand kilometers. Associated with travel, the moon had been terraformed through magic and transformed into a massive docking hub for those arriving from other parts of the known universe.
Thousands of docking ports covered its surface, allowing astral ships from distant worlds to land safely. Passengers and cargo were subjected to security checks before they were permitted to continue their journey to Myrrandor.
Carina was more than just a modern docking hub, however.
Scattered across the moon were ancient portals built by the Magi of old. During the Fourth Epoch—the Age of Man—when humanity first took to the sea of stars and began colonizing countless galaxies, the ancient Magi had established these portals and connected them to the far reaches of the known universe.
Even after countless years had passed, those ancient portals still served as gateways between Myrrandor and the distant worlds beyond.
On this day, a ship landed in one of the docking ports. It was a small, private vessel. Like an ant compared to the behemoths docked on or around the orbit of Carina.
As the ship landed, a tall woman stepped down from the bridge, followed by her retinue of knights and retainers.
She was a woman of contrasts. Scars marked her face diagonally, giving her a distinctly martial appearance. Yet the accessories and clothes she wore gave her a charming, aristocratic elegance.
Her auburn hair and cerulean eyes made her undeniably beautiful. Yet there was something dangerous about her. Something feral. Then there was her shadow. There seemed to be something dangerous hidden in her shadow, yet none but her knew of it.
Her presence was like a rose covered in sharp thorns. Beautiful to behold, but dangerous to touch.
She looked toward the sky. It was covered by the deep blue seas of Myrrandor. Night had already fallen on the world above. But her destination lay on the other side of the world—Centerra.
Another smaller vessel was waiting for her at her private landing port. Everywhere she passed, people watched her with reverence and bowed their heads.
As if she were royalty.
She was.
Without saying a word to anyone, she boarded the shuttle that would take her to Davos.
***
Lords’ Castle, Mount Davos.
This was the Free City of Davos’s seat of government, grand and imposing.
It had only been a few days since Emily Damon had taken office, yet she was already buried in paperwork.
Not only did she have to deal with the fallout from Nigel Norwood’s actions and appease the influential merchants and nobles of Davos, but she also had to deal with the escalating tensions between the Iron Covenant and the Night Guild.
The Night Guild was the more pressing concern, as they controlled a large portion of Davos’s criminal underworld. This faction was closer to home. Dark Port was practically their domain.
The members of the Free City Alliance were like a pack of wolves, waiting for any sign of weakness from Davos.
Now that they smelled blood, the sharks were stirring in the deep waters.
Thankfully, she wasn’t alone. There were the Unknown Lords to help her. But even then, not all of them were allies.
Only Ajax, Hannibal, and another Unknown Lord stood on her side. As for the others, it went without saying that their interests were more aligned with those of the former Known Lord, Nigel Norwood.
The doors to her office opened with a creak, and a tall and lithe woman hurried to her side.
"Mistress!" she said quickly. "Lady Fortuna has just entered the Castle."
"Ah, she’s finally here." Emily’s brows rose in slight surprise. "That was quick. I suppose she was already in the star system. Do usher her in."
A few minutes later, the auburn-haired lady with cerulean eyes stepped inside the Known Lord’s office.
"My darling," she said with a smirk as she saw Emily standing in the middle of the room, waiting for her. "You always were more suited to be a politico."
Emily Damon stared at the newcomer for a moment. Then she smiled.
"Valentina, it is good to see you."
The two embraced each other and kissed each other on the cheeks. Then they took a seat in the seating area of the office, catching up on old times. It did seem that the two powerful ladies shared a history.
Emily explained to her how suddenly the opportunity for the position of Known Lord had presented itself to her. It was too good to miss. Valentina talked about the war raging in the distant worlds as she feasted on olives and cheese.
At last, Valentina spoke of the reason why she had arrived on this planet. A solemn look replaced the playfulness on her face.
"I’m ashamed that I couldn’t come sooner," she said. "But you did say she was all right, yes?"
Emily nodded. "She returned to the city a few days ago."
She rose from her seat and retrieved a stack of papers from her table. Then she handed them over to her friend and explained, "This is a detailed report of the survivors from the Blood Moon Secret Plane."
Valentina read through the papers, muttering to herself, "Less than thirty survivors."
Her brows furrowed. "High possibility of devil involvement? Stronger than a Transcendent?"
She looked to Emily and skeptically said, "How did these kids even survive?"
"Go on." Emily gestured for her to continue.
And Valentina did. She read how Genevieve had almost been sacrificed to the devil. Those words caused her heart to clench momentarily. But what stunned her even more was the duo responsible for defeating the devil.
Her eyes narrowed. "A Claudius was also trapped inside the secret plane?"
"Indeed." Emily nodded. "Apparently, he and a young man named Constantine defeated the devil."
Valentina didn’t care about Adam’s involvement. She was, however, very curious about what a descendant of House Claudius was doing here.
She thought for a moment and concluded:
Hmm. A pilgrimage to the Seven Wonders, perhaps.
Yes, that makes sense. All the scions of the Houses wish to walk in the footsteps of our God Emperor and look for his inheritances.
She sighed, shaking her head.
Ah, to be young...
"Valentina, there is something else," Emily suddenly said, her voice grave.
"What is it?"
Out of caution, Emily erected a barrier around them, an act that made Valentina very solemn. Whatever Emily was about to say must be very important.
"The Domina Occulta," Emily said.
"They tried to recruit your niece."
