Chapter 2143: Pursuit of the Truth

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Despite being reduced to such a state after being imprisoned for nearly a decade, Morgan’s eyes still carried that twinkle of charisma.

He curiously looked at his visor. One, a tall and broad-shouldered, with a muscular physique. The other, shorter and lankier. An odd pair, to say the least.

Though the shorter man did look familiar.

"Do I know you, young man?" he asked Adam.

"Magus Morgan." Adam stepped forward. "My name is Adam Constantine. We met at the Rabbit Hole many years ago."

"I do meet a lot of people." Morgan smirked. "And I do spend a lot of time at Hannibal’s whenever I’m in Myrrandor. You do look familiar, though. Forgive me if I do not recognize you."

Luca stepped away. He leaned by the door, arms crossed. He had no intention of speaking to the prisoner. He just wanted to observe. Though he wouldn’t be lying if he claimed he felt cheated and used by Adam to gain entry into Fortune’s End.

The name Claudius did open many doors across many worlds of the Imperium, after all.

But still, he wanted to give his friend the benefit of the doubt. This may or may not be about some treasure. But Luca was certain that Adam meant it when he said it was related to Valerian.

"That’s okay." Adam took another step forward. "We don’t have much time. So I hope you can forgive me for being blunt. Is that okay?"

Morgan frowned. But he nodded. "Go on."

"Why were you imprisoned?" Adam asked solemnly.

Morgan’s face darkened. "You little shit."

He spat on the floor and walked to the door on his side.

"Wait!" Adam pressed his hands against the wall. Desperation seeped into his voice. "Please, wait! I’m not making fun of you. I need to know the truth! Please!"

Morgan turned to him and sneered. "Fuck you."

He turned back, his hand reaching for the door.

"That night you were abducted! You came to the Rabbit Hole! I saw you! I saw you!" Adam did not give up. "That same night, my brother was kidnapped! I believe the two cases are related. Please, just listen to me!"

Morgan did not listen. He banged on the door twice, signaling the guard on the other side to take him away.

Adam’s expression turned more and more desperate. He did not want the damned item that the Night Guild was after. He only wanted to know about the mastermind that had put his and his little brother’s lives in jeopardy. He wanted to get to the bottom of it.

The door on the other side slowly creaked open, and Leto Morgan prepared to leave.

Adam gritted his teeth. "Coincidences! Did you feel there were a lot of coincidences leading to your arrest? Tell me that, at least!"

Leto Morgan froze.

He whirled toward the glass wall, his eyes wide as saucers.

"What did you just say?"

From his position by the door, Luca stirred. His eyes narrowed. The reaction from Leto Morgan was unexpected, to say the least.

Meanwhile, the corners of Adam’s lips involuntarily curled upward. "I knew it."

"How did you know?" This time, it was Morgan who turned frantic. "This... I haven’t told this to anyone!"

"Magus Morgan, I believe you and I have been involved in someone’s schemes. It would appear you were the fall-out guy. As for me... I’m still trying to figure it out." Adam’s eyes turned solemn.

"How did you know about the coincidences?" Morgan blurted out. He suddenly thought of something and murmured. "Don’t tell me... did you also..."

Adam nodded. "I experienced a series of coincidences that almost led to the deaths of my little brother and me."

He paused before saying, "I believe you had nothing to do with Nigel Norwood. So why were you truly imprisoned?"

Morgan searched Adam’s face for any sign of deceit. He considered for a few moments.

Then he finally replied, "I don’t know how I was connected to that thieving bastard. As you just said, in the months leading to my arrest, I faced too many coincidences. Almost overlooked them at the time. But time in prison gives you a lot to think about.

"That was when I realized how unnatural the series of events were. Always at the wrong time and the wrong place. Randomly meeting people who, in the future, ended up becoming witnesses to a crime I did not even connect. It just did not make sense."

He gulped nervously. "I had a vague feeling someone was pulling the strings. But I never thought they would dare to use magic inside Davos. That night, when I learned I would be imprisoned for a crime I did not even commit, I rushed to my friend.

"I believed that if there was anyone who could help me, it would be Hannibal. But the Watch caught me. They provided undeniable evidence against me that, again, simply made no sense to me. They said I assisted Nigel Norwood in embezzling millions of gold coins. That is a lie. But..."

"But what?" Adam pressed.

"It was not my association with the former Known Lord that landed me here," Morgan said. "It was because of my close friendship with his grandson, Havel."

Adam frowned. He recalled Michael’s reports. "Aiding and abetting a criminal suspected of having ties to the former Known Lord," he murmured. "Havel Norwood?"

"Havel is not a criminal," Morgan said, shaking his head. "The night before my arrest, we were supposed to meet. But he never showed up. The Watch thinks I helped him escape. I did not. They think he was complicit in the embezzlement. But Havel despised his grandfather. He truly loathed him. Trust me."

"Why did he want to meet you?" Adam asked. "Did he say what it was about?"

"I have no idea." Morgan shook his head. "As I said, he never showed up."

Adam fell into deep thought. The clock kept ticking. Yet he couldn’t make heads or tails of the new information that had come to light. Round and round in circles he went. The deeper he dug in his pursuit of the truth, the more mysteries he uncovered.

"Adam, listen to me," Morgan suddenly said.

"I have little less than a year left till my time here is up. If what you say about the... coincidences is true, then I will help you once I leave this prison. I promise you."

Adam looked at him and nodded, feeling a sudden weight lift off his shoulders. "Alright."

"Until then," Morgan whispered as if their entire conversation wasn’t being observed by who knew how many people. "If you want to get to the bottom of this, you need to find my friend Havel Norwood."

Adam nodded solemnly. Although he had come here expecting more, he still received a clue from Morgan.

He hesitated briefly before saying, "The Night Guild is after you. So be careful when you leave this place. They might be waiting for you. Hell, they might be waiting for me."

Morgan did not show any expression. If he was startled by Adam’s revelation, he did a good job of hiding it. He simply nodded. "I understand."

"Thank you for this," Adam said sincerely. "I’ll see you back in Davos."

He then turned to leave. Before he stepped out of the door, Morgan called out to him.

"Hey, Constantine."

His voice sounded so different now.

Adam turned to him from the doorway. "Yes?"

Leto Morgan smiled ruefully.

"When you meet Hannibal, tell him I said... sic itur ad astra."
