The Forest Castle, an attraction in the Forest Area, was, according to Alice, an attraction where you advanced through rooms by clearing various challenges.I ended up in the same room as Fate-san, Lillywood-san, and Cornelia-san, so the four of us would be working together as we made our way through.
At first, Cornelia-san was extremely intimidated, and I thought Id have to step in and smooth things over whenever necessary, but as we talked, she seemed to get used to things, and she was now conversing normally with both Lillywood-san and Fate-san. Even through Sympathy Magic, I couldnt sense any emotions like stress coming from her, so it looked like shed be fine.
[Errr, for now, I guess we just open the door and keep going?]
[It looks like theres a picture and some writing on the door.]
As I murmured and looked toward the door that was presumably the way forward, Cornelia-san noticed the same thing. Sure enough, just as she said, the door had a large jigsaw puzzle on it with about two pieces missing.
And written on the door were the words Complete the Forest Picture. Since this was the very first room, I figured it was meant to serve as a tutorial, so the challenge would be something simple. Looking around the room, I quickly spotted the missing pieces, one was on a table, while the other had been placed in an unnaturally large gap on a bookshelf.
[Ill fit these in Ah, the door opened.]
[So thats it? That was pretty easy.]
[No, I think this attraction is about progressing through room after room like this, so that was probably just the very first challenge.]
Is it something like solving riddles?
It seemed Fate-san and Lillywood-san had never experienced an attraction like this before, and they watched with expressions of genuine curiosity.
The door with the completed puzzle opened automatically, and after passing through it, we entered the next room This one was circular, with pictures of animals covering the walls.
Touch the Odd One Out
Fumu, I see The various animals and monsters in the pictures probably all followed a certain pattern, and wed have to touch the one that didnt fit to proceed.
Since this was only the second room, I imagined wed probably be allowed to keep trying even if we got it wrong. Even if we couldnt figure out the odd one out, it seemed likely that brute-forcing every option would eventually get us through.
[The odd one out Which one could it be?]
In that case, wouldnt it be that Sea Horse over there? Its the only monster thats a sea creature.
[Ahh~ I see.]
The picture Lillywood-san pointed to depicted a monster that looked like a fusion of a fish and a horse. So it wasnt a seahorse in the ordinary sense, but actually a monster called a Sea Horse
I reached out and lightly touched the picture, and apparently it was the correct answer, because the door opened.
[The challenges are pretty easy~~]
[Well, it is an attraction at an amusement facility. Theyve probably lowered the difficulty so people of all ages can enjoy it. Though its possible well encounter more difficult puzzles farther ahead]
Before I knew it, Cornelia-san had become able to speak calmly with Fate-san. Considering how nervous shed been at first, it felt like an incredible leap forward.
It certainly did, but I dont know. She seemed perfectly calm, and the emotions I sensed through Sympathy Magic werent strange either But somehow it felt less like shed simply settled down and more like shed completely let go of something, almost too completely Was I just overthinking it?
[Kaito-sama? Is something the matter?]
[Ah, no. Its just that Cornelia-san seemed really nervous at first, so I was worried. Im relieved to see youve calmed down.]
[Ahhh, I see. Im sorry for making you worry. Its simply my noble upbringing, I suppose. I kept thinking about my familys circumstances and my position in noble society going forward, imagining one unpleasant scenario after another, and my thinking became rather rigid. But for now, Ive decided to set all of that aside and simply enjoy the attraction. Perhaps thats why I feel so much more at ease.]
I suppose that made sense. For nobles, connections and reputation among their peers were probably very important. Getting to know Fate-san and Lillywood-san and building those connections was certainly a good thing, but perhaps attracting too much attention could also become a problem. I could relate, I hadnt intended it, but Id somehow ended up being hailed as a hero in Rigforeshia, leaving me in a rather awkward position. Being put on too high a pedestal could definitely become troublesome
[I guess noble society really is rough.]
[There is certainly an aspect of constantly keeping one another in check. Of course, it has its glamorous side as well, but its quite different from the world commoners tend to imagine. If, by chance, Kaito-sama were ever to attend a soiree, then given that esteemed ones warning, no noble would carelessly approach to greet you. However, you yourself might have to be careful about whom you choose to speak to. In that case, it would be best if you attended together with a noble acquaintance.]
[I dont know if Ill ever have the opportunity, but if I do, maybe Ill ask you to come with me, Cornelia-san.]
[Fufu, that would certainly be an important responsibility. If such an opportunity arises, Ill do my utmost.]
I couldnt say with certainty that Id never have a chance to attend a soiree. For example, if it were something like Chris-sans birthday party Since everyone had celebrated mine, I might very well decide to attend and celebrate hers.
It had been a joking exchange, but shed agreed nonetheless. If the opportunity ever arose, relying on Cornelia-san might not be such a bad idea after all.
Serious-senpai : [Shes steadily paving the road straight to hell]
