The room we arrived at, which I expected would be the last one if my guess was right, was clearly different from all the others.[A chapel, perhaps?]
Yes, it looked like a large chapel. The walls were lined with enormous stained-glass windows, each depicting a different symbolic scene.
And beneath each stained-glass window was a door A quick count revealed nine stained-glass windows and nine corresponding doors. In the center of the chapel stood a sign.
Proceed along the right path Once you pass through a door, you cannot return
I see. So the final challenge was a puzzle Out of the nine doors, only one was the correct choice, and we were supposed to determine which one it was using the clues hidden throughout the chapel. The images on the stained-glass windows were probably the key.
[I have a feeling no matter which door you choose, youll still reach the goal in the end. Its just that only the correct door leads to the special hidden-route ending.]
[So we must deduce the answer from the clues within the chapel.]
Cornelia-san nodded at my conclusion and slowly looked around the chapel. The figures depicted in the stained glass looked vaguely human, but what significance did they have?
As I was wondering that, Fate-san muttered with an awkward expression.
[Ugh thats me]
[Eh? Ah, now that you mention it, it really does look like Fate-san. And that stained glass over there looks like Chronois-san, while that one resembles Life-san.]
After Fate-san pointed it out, I took another look. She was right, it really did resemble Fate-san There were also figures that looked like Chronois-san, Life-san Sky-san, Gaia-san, Shea-san, and Fortune-san.
Perhaps these stained-glass windows are based on the Creation Story.
[Ahh~~ yeah, that does seem likely. Me, God of Time and Space, God of Life and the two direct subordinate gods serving each of us.]
[The Creation Story is something almost everyone knows. It certainly makes for a fitting theme for a puzzle.]
The Creation Story was best known as the tale reenacted by Gods during events like the Hero Festival, but as Cornelia-san said, it was fundamentally one of those classic stories that nearly everyone in the world knew.
The closest equivalent in Japan would probably be Momotaro. Parents told it to their children, people heard it during worship, at school, and at blessings. Living an ordinary life in Trinia without ever encountering the Creation Story would be extraordinarily rare.
Of course, few people knew every detail or all of its deeper meanings, but even I knew the general outline.
The great God of Creation created the world, and first brought forth the Goddess of Fate. Through the Goddess of Fate, the worlds laws came into being. Next, the God of Creation created the Goddess of Life, and through the Goddess of Life, life was born into the world. Then the God of Creation created the Goddess of Time, and the flow of time began. Fate fashioned the scales of calamity and fortune. Life established the earth and the heavens. Time raced forth like a flash of light, nurturing the thoughts of all living beings
Thats how the story went, a myth describing how the present world came into existence, beginning with Shiro-san. The full tale was much longer, but this opening portion was by far the most famous. It featured Fate-san, Life-san, Chronois-san, Shea-san, Fortune-san, Gaia-san, Sky-san, God of Flash-san, and God of Thoughts-san, perfectly matching the figures depicted in the chapels stained-glass windows.
[Well, the Creation Story is really just a fabricated tale. More of a piece of propaganda constructed to spread awareness of Gods.]
[Eh? I- Is that true?]
[Unn. Kai-chan and World King already know this, but in reality, everything was created by Shallow Vernal-sama. She created the world, the laws of nature, life, everything. We Gods were created afterward by Shallow Vernal-sama and granted the necessary powers our Authorities, to manage and oversee the world she had made., so it wasnt that fate came into existence because I was born. Its actually the other way around. I was created in order to govern the concepts of laws and fate.]
Judging by the obvious look of surprise on Cornelia-sans face, it seemed that the Creation Story was generally accepted as historical fact by the public.
[You said it was constructed Does that mean the Creation Story was actually written by Gods?]
[Unn. More specifically, it was a story God of Life, God of Time and Space, and I came up with together. Well, God of Time and Space did most of the writing. God of Life and I only chimed in with suggestions every now and then]
[Ah~~ was that Shiro-sans idea?]
[Of course it was. If it hadnt been Shallow Vernal-samas command, theres no way wed have made up a story claiming that things Shallow Vernal-sama did were actually our own accomplishments.]
[Yeah, that makes sense.]
Id already suspected that the Creation Story had been written at Shiro-sans instruction. After all, otherwise I couldnt imagine Gods allowing such a story to exist.
[Apparently the original proposal came from Kurorin. After the Treaty of Friendship was signed, she thought it would be good to have a story like that to help people become familiar with the God Realm I think thats also why Shallow Vernal-sama instructed us to write it so that we were the ones who created fate, life, and time. If the story was just Shallow Vernal-sama created everything, and we were put in charge of managing it, then it wouldnt make for much of a story.]
[Well thats certainly true. But if the Creation Story is the basis for this then which door is supposed to be the right path?]
[Thats the problem.]
Right, wed figured out the theme, and having Fate-san here had let us hear some fascinating behind-the-scenes details But that was beside the point. Now that we knew the motif was the Creation Story, the real question was which of the doors was the correct one. With that, all of us tilted our heads in thought.
Serious-senpai : [Well, considering Shiro and her thoughts only that of maintaining the Treaty of Friendship, I cant really imagine her coming up with something so thoughtful on her own, so it makes sense that Kuro was the one who proposed it. Honestly, I bet Kuro came up with almost everything, and Shiro just passed Kuros instructions along to the Supreme Gods as if they were her own.]
