After receiving an explanation at the attractions reception desk, each of us was handed an individual consent form. To put it simply, the form stated that we understood all the precautions and other important information and were participating in the attraction of our own free will. Apparently, it was quite frightening after all. There was just one thing that caught my attention. The consent form contained an item asking whether we agreed to being affected by special mental magic.
After confirming that everyone had received a copy of the form, the receptionist explained what it meant Apparently, it was asking whether we were willing to receive what could be described as a mental debuff-type spell.
The reason was that a barrier covering the entire attraction had been imbued with magic that made people somewhat more susceptible to fear. This was intended for people like Lilia-san and the others, whose abilities were so exceptional that they might not feel frightened by the attraction otherwise. By agreeing to it on the consent form, we would provide magical consent through the magic formula, allowing the effect to take hold.
It was a debuff designed to help people enjoy the attraction, much like the one used during the roller coaster ride. Apparently, the effect itself wasnt particularly strong. It wasnt something that forcibly made you feel fear. Rather, it put you in a state where you were more susceptible to fear and surprise than usual, much like when your nerves were heightened.
Since it merely made people more susceptible to those feelings, there were apparently cases where someone might not notice any effect at all if they absolutely could not feel fear to begin with, even after receiving the debuff spell.
This was entirely optional though, and people who werent comfortable with horror attractions could opt out by checking the box indicating that they did not consent.
[I see. It sounds similar to the burden-inducing magic used during the knights mental training exercises.]
[Ah, yes, there was something like that~~ Wasnt it the training they made recruits undergo before their first battle? The effects are probably a little different, though.]
[Going into actual combat without mental training and then freezing up in front of a monster would be dangerous after all.]
Lilia-san and the others seemed familiar with that kind of magic, and both Luna-san and Sieg-san spoke about it with a rather nostalgic air. I suppose knights have to train not only their combat abilities but also their mental fortitude, so it wasnt surprising that they had exercises like that.
[I- Ill check the box saying I dont consent. What about you, Aoi-senpai?]
[I- I wouldnt mind consenting, but then if I get scared, itll be because of this magics effect, and that wouldnt settle things between me and Hina-chan, so Ill go without it.]
As expected, Hina-chan, who wasnt fond of horror attractions, chose not to consent. Aoi-chan also checked the box indicating that she didnt consent, for the perfectly reasonable reason that she wanted to find out whether she was actually a scaredy-cat without any artificial effects influencing her.
As for the others, Theta chose not to consent because she considered the possibility of encountering Wraith-type creatures. Caraway also opted out, not because of any fear-related concerns, but because she disliked the sensation of mental interference magic. Everyone else checked the box indicating their consent.
I guess Ill consent, too If I sign the consent form properly, the magic should work without any problems, just like with VR and similar attractions.
After signing the consent forms, the three of us who would be starting first, Hina-chan, Aoi-chan, and me, headed toward the entrance of the abandoned fortress that served as the attraction.
According to the staff member guiding us, the attraction was designed so that we wouldnt encounter any other participating groups inside the fortress. More precisely, much like Forest Castle and similar attractions, the fortress was divided into separate sections. Multiple groups werent allowed to enter the same section at the same time. When moving from one section to another, if another group was already in the next section, we would be redirected to a different section first, leaving the occupied one for later.
[In other words, everyone you encounter inside the fortress is part of the attractions performance. Even if you see someone in a horrific condition or someone whose appearance is too gruesome to look at, please do not misunderstand. Well then, enjoy your experience We pray that you will return safely.]
That was what the staff member said, but did that mean there would be scenes involving people who looked like real humans created through Illusion Magic being brutally murdered and things like that? They had included a warning about graphic content, so it seemed quite possible
Hina-chan was, of course, frightened, but Aoi-chan also seemed pretty shaken by the prospect of that happening, and now both of them were gripping my arms.
[Aoi-senpai? Arent you actually scared after all?]
[Thats not it. Its dark, so I dont want us to get separated M- More importantly, weve started, so lets concentrate on the attraction.]
I couldnt help feeling that we already had our answer, but for the time being, I entered the fortress through the gate together with the two of them. As we did, I felt something like passing through a thin membrane. When I turned around, the staff member who had been standing there moments ago was nowhere to be seen.
A barrier Had we entered the attraction proper? Fumu This is impressive. Its dimly lit, and I can smell a little dustiness along with something resembling rusty iron. I can even hear screams coming from somewhere in the distance.
I couldnt tell whether those were sound effects or the voices of other participants, but the atmosphere was quite convincing. Both Aoi-chan and Hina-chan were also visibly tense.
And that wasnt all. Since wed entered the attraction, the mental debuff magic should now be taking effect. Which meant I should be feeling fear Fear huh No, I dont feel anything in particular.
Arehh? I dont really feel any different. Is this the kind of magic whose effects arent immediately noticeable? Or perhaps, since it only makes you more susceptible to fear, I wont know whether its working until I actually encounter some horror elements?
Based on my experience, I dont think that kind of consent agreement would have been rendered ineffective Hmm, I cant tell at this point.
Mental Debuff Magic : [Hm? Well, now this is something else. This ones got an absolutely ridiculous amount of mental fortitude. And people like this are exactly where I come in Consent confirmed! Here I go! Mental Debuff!!!]
Kaito : [(I dont particularly feel any different.)]
Mental Debuff Magic : [Grrgh Ngh Haaaaaaah!!! Nnngh W- What incredible mental fortitude L- Like Ill lose here!!! Full power!!!]
Kaito : [(Is this the kind of magic whose effects arent immediately noticeable?)]
Mental Debuff Magic : [What the heck?! Y- You gotta be kidding me! This guys natural mental fortitude is so ridiculously strong that my debuff isnt getting through at all!!!]
Kaito : [(Maybe it wont take effect until something happens?)]
Mental Debuff Magic : [Its like Im desperately trying to change the color of the ocean using food coloring in a tiny dropper bottle!!! My output and everything else just arent nearly enough!!!]
Kaito : [(Hmm,I cant tell at this point.)]
Mental Debuff Magic : [Seriously! Its impossible! Theres no way a magic formula merely imbued into a barrier can have any effect on this monsters mental fortitude!!!]
