Chapter 5612: Chain Them! II

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

<Warden Yrsa>

Warden Yrsa came into the crossing-dark outside THE Ymnaros.

The white rivers opened behind her, and her forces came through.

They came in silence as dozens of them poured out of the loomlight, and every one of them was shrouded head to toe in white cloth that left nothing of a face or a frame to read, their wrappings drawn tight and bound at the wrists and the throat, and around each shrouded figure, rivers of THE Argent Loom turned slowly in orbit!

Not one of them emanated a thread of authority as they fanned out toward the fused Dimension! Not an Intent among them. Not an ounce of Source, not a breath of Infinity, and their presense registered nowhere at all as they went!

Yrsa watched them deploy.

A single one of them was equivalent to a weak Primeval Lifeform.

One shrouded servant, wrapped and bound and silent, carried enough refined force to end the kind of ancient thing that entire Dimensions built religions around, and she had brought dozens of them, and they moved in units and obeyed without a sound! Existence outside these folds had no records of them, and existence would learn of them one incursion at a time!

And her own power exceeded any common Primeval One.

She did not dwell on it. She had stood before Primeval Lifeforms fat with Ages, things that had grazed on Dimensions since before the frameworks were named, and she had walked out of those meetings and they had not.

Below and ahead, THE Ymnaros went about its afternoon! Countless lifeforms moving through Observable Existences and a fused Dimension, and above them, the guardians of this Dimension stood at their posts and felt nothing coming!

Yrsa looked at all of it, and she thought about the weavings of the unworthy.

Authority was not evil. Authority was a hammer that existence handed out at random to whoever climbed the right ladder fast enough, and the trouble was never the hammer!

The trouble was that existence handed it to ANYONE, and then walked away, and never once came back to check what was being built with it! THE Sealed One had been handed a hammer and had ground an entire Age of his own children, and he was not the exception, he was simply the example everyone remembered. There were many like him.

Not one of them had been worthy of what they held.

"Positions," Yrsa said.

The shrouded ones reported across the loomlight in a flat overlapping chorus.

The dragon.

The blindfolded one.

The scholar.

The strongest of the ones with no authority.

The pledged beneath them.

"The Descendant outside is mine," she said. "Nobody touches him but me. Chains ready. Cages ready. Nothing sequential."

Understood.

She raised her hand, and the thing in it was a plain gray cylinder without a single mark on it, and thread-fine lines of white ran through its surface the way they ran through every collar her order had ever closed.

A Dimensional Inhibitor.

One second. Barely less. And then nothing from it for a long while after, because there were not many of these in all of existence and each one was worth more than a thousand Primeval Ones!

"Sweep," said Warden Yrsa.

And she broke the cylinder.

HUUM!

A silent light wept across everything like the cry of existence itself being disallowed to express itself!

And...

Authority died across THE Ymnaros!

It went out everywhere at once, a single silent second in which every ladder in the Dimension simply stopped existing, and nothing struck anyone, and nothing burned, and nothing was even touched! Things were simply subtracted! Intents guttered as Pantheons of Infinite Lifeforms folded, and the crimson gold weavings threaded through the key figures of this domain went dark from the sky down to the soil!

And her forces MOVED!

Hvitrmarr was flying the northern side of the fused Dimension filled with Infinite Lifeforms, enjoying her freedom, when the sky went quiet.

The White Steed, THE Blood Duke, vampiric crimson beneath white with her red gold wings spread across gigaparsecs of new territory, felt her nine transforming organs stop answering her instsntly!

Every single one of them went silent inside her body as her wings kept beating out of nothing but muscle and habit!

She fell.

A being who had carried burdens across three thousand years of chains dropped out of the northern sky and struck the ground hard enough to crack it for miles, and she smashed into shocked clusters of Infinite Lifeforms that were turned to pulp by her weight alone as none had any authority at this point!

Four shrouded figures came down on top of her.

They climbed her. White wrappings moved up her flanks and across her spine as the Loom-rivers around them bent down and pinned her wings flat to the stone, and when her wings strained against the pinning, the shrouded ones simply pressed harder, folding the great red gold spans backward at angles wings were never made to hold, and Hvitrmarr screamed in pain!

One of them walked the length of her neck with a gray band held open in both hands. She thrashed. She tore gorges through the ground with claws that were only claws now, and another shrouded one stepped onto the side of her head and stood there, its full Primeval-grade weight pressing her jaw into the broken stone, holding her skull utterly still no matter how she heaved beneath it, and the band closed anyway!

CLICK!

And then the chains came.

Loomlight poured off the shrouded ones in ropes as they wound them around her legs and her wings and her jaws, hardening as they wrapped, and they wound her jaws shut, muzzling an ancient queen mid-scream, and her voice broke off into a strangled sound through bound teeth, and her ancient existence read to every sense in existence as... a very large animal being tied down by farmhands!

"...Mmh! MMMH!"

She was still trying to say something through the muzzle.

Not again. Not again!

She did not want to be chained again!

They dragged her- two shrouded ones took the chains at her legs and hauled her across the ground on her side, her white flank grinding through the gorges her own claws had torn, and above the northern sky, something began to appear!

It came out of nothing in a grinding of dull gray metal, a cubical cage of that same seamless metal, wide enough to hold a dragon, and then another beside it, and another above that, stacking themselves into the air of a Dimension that had been free for hours!

They hauled her up to the first one, and they THREW her in!

Three thousand years of chains, hours of sky, and a being who had broken her own bindings through pure conserved will was thrown in without a shred of care, cargo and nothing more, striking the far wall hard enough to ring the whole cage, and the door ground shut on her before she had stopped sliding!

Inside it, bound and muzzled, THE Blood Duke shook in pain as she tried to scream...and was unable to.

Damodred was in the citadel when it happened.

The last Laestrygonian had been standing among Humans, as he often did now, letting the children stare at the blindfold of crimson gold hands across his face, and the moment the sweep landed, the hands went dark and dead and the great eye behind them shut for the first time.

He stood there in the street with his blindfold gone lifeless, and he understood immediately what had been done to him as he sought to move!

Three shrouded figures walked out of the crowd toward him at speeds his current existence could not follow, because all authority became inhibited and nullified... he was not able to do a thing!

But he could still move his body, and so the last Laestrygonian did the only thing left to him.

He stepped in front of the children.

He spread his arms across a street full of small staring faces, a being with a dead blindfold shielding Humans with nothing but his own frame, and the shrouded ones did not slow down for any of it!

They came through the crowd in straight lines, and the crowd was simply IN the lines! Their movements and authority trampled hundreds of nearby Humans to bloody pulp, bodies that had been laughing in a market street one breath ago crushed beneath wrappings that never once looked down, and Damodred ROARED, a sound no one in this citadel had ever heard from him, and threw himself at the nearest shrouded figure with his bare hands!

His fists struck a thing equivalent to a weak Primeval Lifeform, and his authority was gone, and the shrouded figure did not even sway.

They put the band on him in the middle of the screaming street, and they were not gentle about a single motion of it! One shrouded hand gripped the back of his neck and bent him, forcing the last Laestrygonian a murdered race down over the bodies of the Humans he had failed to shield, holding him folded there while the band clicked shut, and then the loomlight ropes went around his wrists and his elbows and his knees, cinched tight enough to cut, and they dragged him upward off the ground by the rope at his wrists, hanging, and a second cage ground into existence above the citadel and took him in the same way the first had taken the dragon!

Thrown. Rung against the far wall. Sealed.

And below, many Humans and some Superpowered Lifeforms stood in a street painted with their own people, and watched their new protector hang and vanish into a metal box in the sky.

In another direction.

Anaximander did not resist as he seemed to have sensed something in the last possible moment.

He watched Axon approach with the band, and he made no attempt to leave.

The band closed around the neck of a being no framework had ever managed to file.

And nothing happened.

...!

Axon’s halos stopped turning.

Because the collar sat there at the scholar’s throat, seamless and sealed and doing absolutely nothing at all, and Anaximander looked down at it, and then he looked up, and there was nothing scholarly left in his face! Cold anger sat there instead.

And around him, the skies filled with weight!

They came from every direction at once. Ianthe Kallias landed on the stone beside him, and old Peleus came, and dozens more, many Superpowered Lifeforms of THE Ymnaros arriving as some of them were collared. And every one of them exactly as strong as they had been an hour ago!

"Were these collars... supposed to do something?" Anaximander said coldly.

And he reached up, took hold of the band at his throat with both hands, and tore it apart!

CRACK!

The pieces fell.

Anaximander stepped forward and cracked his knuckles as surrounding existence began to shake!

And gigaparsecs out, in the crossing-dark beyond the fused Dimension, Warden Yrsa went to collect the Descendant.

She found Jarl Skallagrim on his feet with his last Steed beside him, both of them stripped by the sweep, his crimson gold seas guttered and his fissures gone dim, and she walked toward them across the black with two gray bands in her hands and no hurry in her at all.

The Steed she took first.

It shrieked and tried to bolt, and one loomlight rope caught its neck and folded its legs beneath it mid-stride so that it crashed chin-first into the dark, and Warden Yrsa walked over to it, and set her boot on its neck, and closed the band around its throat with the ease of a keeper closing a gate!

CLICK!

Chains wound over it, cinched down until the little Steed could not raise its head, and it lay pinned in the dark and shook, uncursed and uncollared for barely a few hours of its existence, and collared again now, and its eyes rolled toward Skallagrim the whole time, asking him for something he could not give!

Then she turned to the Descendant, and she pressed the second band to his throat, and it began to close.

And it stopped halfway!

Because the shroud had come out!

THE Thousand Deaths I Do Not Owe billowed out of Skallagrim’s fissures in ragged dark crimson gold, every death that had ever been written into his clause and was now unpaid, and it drove itself into the closing band and jammed there, wedging the gray metal open a finger’s width from sealing!

The collar was still winning, closing by slow increments as the shroud thinned, and the Blood Sovereign’s arms shook as he held the thing off his own throat with a power that should have been switched off entirely!

Half bound. Half free!

Yrsa stopped, and she watched it for a long moment.

"Hm."

She tilted her head as she studied the wedged band.

"This is definitely a first. But I knew a Descendant would be troublesome..."

...!

Skallagrim’s shroud thinned another fraction, and he dragged it back up with a roar!

"So." Yrsa clasped her hands.

And she looked past him at the Dimension behind his shoulder, where cages were still grinding into existence in the sky above a citadel, and a dragon lay muzzled and chained in the first of them, and a Laestrygonian hung bound in the second above a street of pulped Humans, and the only things still standing in that whole domain were beings who could not be collared and a scholar who had torn her work apart with his hands!

"What now?"

Skallagrim said nothing. His arms shook, and his crimson gold eyes moved once, past her, to the little Steed pinned under chains in the dark, and then back to her.

"Every powerful being in THE Ymnaros with authority to take has been taken. Your Steed is on the ground at my feet. And you are holding my band open with your own sheer will, which is magnificent, and which changes nothing at all."

Her hand rose, and settled on the wedged gray metal at his throat.

"So call forth your Master, you unruly motherfucker."

...!

As she said such words, she used her power to forcefully close the Inhibitor around Skallagrim’s neck!
