Chapter 5697: Probability! II

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Noah’s crimson gold blood welled up instantly around the band, and there was no resistance at all, no interception, none of his Provenance Body’s layers doing anything whatsoever, and his blood ran hot down his finger and into the gray metal.

And the ring drank it.

It sucked the crimson gold in greedily, absorbing every drop that touched it, and only THEN, only after it had tasted his blood, did the remaining spikes fully recede and the band clasp itself around his finger.

And then it began to shine!

Gold erupted along the ring’s surface, a terrifying gold, deep and old and heavier than any light Noah had ever generated. The impossible lines on its outer band lit up and began to pulse, the single unbroken surface running its endless circuit, light chasing itself around a shape that had no outside and no inside, faster and faster and faster!

The ring clasped tight on his finger and...

BOOM!

A blinding golden light detonated across the frozen spring!

And with it came a VOICE! A voice that felt old, and elegant, and filled with a kind of ingenuity that Noah recognized instantly as belonging to a mind that had never once in its existence been satisfied with how things were.

Before the first light, before the first law, we were, and we were our own...

...!

Those words!

Noah’s whole existence went rigid, because he knew those words! They were the words of THE Aurate Collar! The covenant voice that had repeated inside it since the moment he had put it on.

The words he had spoken, only the first line of them, to trigger THE Provenance Kismet of First Purity, which had produced the white pool, which had opened across time and delivered Thalia Vasiliou into his Realm!

He heard them again now, in his mind, in that golden light.

And this time, they continued!

Before the first light, before the first law, we were, and we were our own...Nothing granted, nothing borrowed, nothing owed. What I am, I made. Let existence bear witness.

HUUM!

The words resounded again and again in his mind, rolling through him, and Noah understood exactly what was being asked of him, because it was the same thing that had been asked of him once before, when he had spoken only a single line of it and existence had answered.

This time he said the whole thing.

"Before the first light, before the first law, we were, and we were our own...Nothing granted, nothing borrowed, nothing owed. What I am, I made. Let existence bear witness!"

HUUM!

Every particle of the blinding golden light vanished instantly!

Noah blinked in the sudden absence of it, standing in the frozen spring with steam frozen around him, and he looked down at his right hand where a golden ring now sat on his finger, pulsing slowly, its impossible lines still running their endless circuit.

Then he looked up at THE REMINISCING WIDOW.

She was extremely still.

And Noah’s eyes pulsed, because shockingly, unbelievably...

He could see her!

Not fragments. Not a line of a cheek arriving and sliding away. Not a beauty that perception itself refused to hold. He looked up at the Immense One standing above the frozen spring and he could actually see and perceive her cleanly!

And just as he began to truly look at her...

The ring on his hand became unfathomably hot!

And a grand booming voice erupted out of it, only for him to hear.

Destiny and fate are not real. Not entirely, anyway.

What is real is probability. Destiny and fate are merely the outcomes of probabilities, and every outcome that has ever been called inevitable was simply a number that got large enough to look like a law.

So consider the numbers, whoever you are.

The probability of my ring landing in the hands of a lifeform who is not an Immense One, when I left it in the keeping of an Immense One. And then, on top of that, the probability of that same lifeform independently satisfying two of the prior conditions I set, so that the ring could actually trigger and activate.

The probability of both of those events occurring is so infinitesimally low that for them to happen at all, the lifeform in question has to be someone who beats the odds.

They have to be someone who can bend Narrative Probability.

And with such a lifeform... maybe there is a chance.

Hello, and welcome to these crazy weavings of life.

I am Atlas.

And I hope that maybe, just maybe, your probability, and your capability to bend it, is grander than mine was. For existence is vast, and there is much to be done.

...!

Atlas?

THE Atlas?!

Noah’s existence buzzed with pure incredulity as the name landed in him and detonated.

THE ENGINEER!

The one who ran circles around Immense Ones! The being who had designed Elsedimensions and Provenance Body arts and weapons made to kill architects, the one whose legacy Aurelius Vasiliou had told him to go and find!

That Atlas!

And the second understanding arrived right behind the first, faster and heavier.

So HE was the man who made THE REMINISCING WIDOW into a widow.

The one who sat in the second chair! The one whose cup was still being kept almost warm at a table in an endless dusk after however many eras had passed.

He had been out here, this early, close enough to an Immense One that she had spent every age since setting a place for him at her table!

But even as Noah was thinking all this...

Now, since we are here, let us play some more games of probability and choices. Okay?

...!

The voice echoed out of the golden ring on his finger, entirely too pleased with itself.

Because maybe, even after all those different probabilities are met, there could still be a factor of luck. And luck is a variable I never liked leaving in a design.

So here is a choice.

You have somehow gotten a grand artifact designed by me, out of the hands of an Immense One.

Will you keep the artifact and infuse it with your Provenance? You may consider it a weapon that could topple an Immense One, if it is used correctly.

Or the second option. Will you give it back to the Immense One?

It carries some sentimentality.

...!
