Chapter 5698: Engineer! I

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Noah controlled his expression, and internally he cursed with everything he had.

What fucking choice?!

Because there was no choice. The choice to be made here was clear, and it was horrible, and it was clear precisely because it was horrible.

A weapon that could topple an architect, offered to a man standing frozen in front of one, and the correct answer was to hand it back!

Noah did not hesitate.

He gripped the golden ring and physically pulled it off his finger, the metal coming free without resistance now, and he drew his arm back and threw it up through the frozen steam toward THE REMINISCING WIDOW!

"This ring was given to you."

His voice carried across the whole of the frozen spring!

"It is a grand artifact and I could choose to keep it. But I know what it means to you. It was the last thing he gave you." He watched it turn end over end as it rose toward her. "You can now put it on."

The ring reached her.

THE REMINISCING WIDOW caught it.

She did not speak as she held the small golden band in fingers that Noah could see clearly now, and she looked at it for a length of time that had no measure to it, in a silence so complete that the frost stopped ticking against the frozen water.

And then she put it on her finger.

BOOM!

Her two golden halos EXPANDED!

They swelled outward from her face and multiplied, ring after ring after ring blooming into existence around her head, growing and layering and overlapping until her entire visage was surrounded and buried behind them, circle upon circle of turning golden metal that hid her completely.

She... did not want a single one of her emotions to be seen!

Noah understood that immediately.

And in the place where the ring had been, in the empty air where it had spun before he ever touched it, Noah alone saw a faint golden brilliance still hanging there.

A residue. A remainder. Something left behind that only his eyes could find!

And out of it, into his mind, came a laugh!

Haha! You actually gave it away?

Atlas!

You dumbass, I would have actually let you keep it!

Noah’s eye twitched!

Haha! But no. It was not something you made. So giving it away was the right choice, and you would not have liked what you became if you had kept it.

That was one of my finest creations. A Gu Elsedimension Ring.

But I will help you make your OWN, so that you remain true to yourself. Our Provenances are grand, and yet we still cannot do things alone. I will make sure you learn to become a grand Engineer in your own right.

Understand what I am, before you get any ideas. I am here and not really here. I am a cluster of records and probability. I do not have my own cognizance.

For now, say goodbye to the one who loved the wrong person. Being near an Immense One for too long will alert him.

I learned that the hard way.

...!

Noah’s eyes pulsed.

He looked up through the frozen steam at THE REMINISCING WIDOW, at the layered halos hiding her entirely, at the hand that had lowered from them and was now turning the golden ring slowly on her finger, stroking it with a thumb, over and over, in the manner of someone who had done this exact motion in her mind ten thousand times without anything actually being there.

And Noah spoke, and his voice was heavy.

"You need to go."

The stroking did not stop!

"I did what you wanted. I even reunited you with his weavings, and you may be hearing his voice even now." He held his ground in the frozen water with Thalia motionless behind him. "Your presence here alone is a danger to me. So you... need to go."

...!

The halos turned!

Yet another person I warned.

And who did not listen.

The frost held its silence around them, and when her words came again it was slower, and it carried a weight of melancholy that had nothing performative in it at all!

You all... I truly do not know what to say to you all anymore.

Do whatever you want. Build whatever you wish to build. Climb whatever you have decided to climb. And when death inevitably comes for you, and it will come, you will remember me. You will remember this evening, and this spring, and every word I said to you.

They always do.

For doing what you have done for me today, I owe you a favor.

You know how you can reach me.

...!

And with those words, THE REMINISCING WIDOW departed!

Her visage folded downward through the frozen air, the layered halos collapsing inward one by one, her draped form flowing back down toward the obsidian journal lying open at the spring’s edge, and she sank into the page she had risen from as the ink drank her back into itself!

The eye on the page closed.

And everything came back!

Warmth crashed across the Elsedimension as the frost broke apart into vapor and the ice sheeting the spring’s surface shattered into golden water, the steam rolling again, the falls resuming their long descent down the Elsemountain, the entire region returning to what it had been before an architect had decided to visit.

And Thalia unfroze.

She came out of it moving, crossing the water in an instant, and she threw her arms around Noah from behind and locked them across his chest and held on.

Noah’s hands came up and closed over hers.

He breathed out, long and slow, and let his head tilt back, and stood there in the scorching golden water with her arms around him, because he had just walked out of a catastrophe that should have ended every point of his existence across all of time, and he had walked out of it with a favor owed!

And in his mind...

Has she left?

Atlas!

If she has, we can proceed ahead. Find a place where you can privately work.

Because I was a genius, and I always found everyone else to be imbeciles. Even Immense Ones. I do not know how much work it will take to teach you to be even a percentage of the engineer that I was.

Ah, to be a genius like me.

Noah’s eye twitched again!

Get going, O Provenance of Existence. O Chance of Chances. O Author of Probability.

Let us see if you will better fit all those titles, because even I could not fully live up to them. But maybe what I could not do, you may manage to do.

Let us see.

Send your Provenance onto the residual Elsedimension Ring when you are ready to get started, and we will begin.

...!
