The eight Lesser Kryos spun faster around each other, trailing pale blue light behind them like comets chasing their own tials!
Noah watched them close. Each one was a quarter of a true Immensity’s remains, a snowflake grown inward on itself, cold and dense and pulsing with the settled weight of something that had once stood at the very top of existence. And as they spun, they began to press together. Two merged first, and then two more, and the pale blue light between them flared, and flared again.
When the light settled, only two crystals hung in the air before him where four had been.
They were larger. Brighter. Denser, each one humming with a low, steady thrum that Noah could feel in his Root, and they were no longer Lesser!
KRYOS EXISTENTIAL CHORIONIC GONADOTROPIN x2.
Each holds the settled weight of an Existential Chorionic Gonadotropin formed within an Immense One. Far grander than the Lesser variety.
...!
Two genuine Kryos Existential Chorionic Gonadotropins born crom 8 Lesser Kryos Existential Chorionic Gonadotropins! At this time...
A blur of blue silk swung past his face.
Ling had flipped upside down in the frozen air, legs tucked, ribbonless hair hanging loose, and she drifted to a stop directly in front of the two Kryos with her face an arm’s length from them. Her eyes were bright with open interest, studying the crystals as a jeweler studies a stone she has not seen before.
Then those same interested eyes lifted from the Kryos and settled on Noah!
He gazed back at her. She hung there upside down, round-faced and blood-speckled and curious, and he thought about a great many things in a very short time. About the Basal Floor stretching away beneath them, cold and vast and full of things that wanted to kill them. About the fact that she was THE Thinker’s daughter, and a Root made flesh, and the only being in this place who could match him blow for blow.
About how she fought, and how she laughed, and the fierce burning look in her eyes when she had kicked the crow’s beak in half.
And about the fact that he was, at the end of all of it, still human. But he had to draw his boundaries.
"Are you interested in me?" Noah said.
Ling blinked!
"I am deciding to change a certain aspect of myself," he went on, "I do not wish to disappoint you with any misunderstandings."
Ling righted herself in the air, slowly, until she was facing him properly. Her smile was wide and warm and a little sharp at its edges.
"I do find you interesting," she said. "But it is more curiosity than anything. There were a few lifeforms in the Legacy who caught my eye. But I didn’t even deem them worthy enough to have anything with."
She shrugged, and the shrug carried her whole body. "It’s a matter of pride. I believed myself so much grander that I couldn’t possibly allow someone weaker than me to experience the wonder of my thighs."
...!
Noah almost laughed. Almost!
"I have been loose with my love and my affection," he said. "Multiple women. And I have not done right by them. So I came to a conclusion that I cannot do that again."
He looked at her directly. "But I am still human, and humans are lustful beings. I can offer you a purely...educational relationship. We learn about each other’s weavings of existence. No emotions. No attachments. We will be working together for a while in this place, and it would do me well to understand the extent of your power. You can try to understand mine."
...!
Ling’s mouth fell open into a wide O!
Then she laughed, the sound ringing out across the frozen dark of the Basal Floor.
"What an arrogant fucking guy you are!" She wiped a tear of laughter from the corner of her eye. "Do we even have time for such things? I can sense a distant aura out there, at least one just as powerful as that crow, if not more."
"One can always dream more time," Noah said. "Come. Let us see how strong your thighs are." His eyes held hers. "And remember. No emotions, and no attachments."
Ling tilted her head!
She looked at him for a long moment, and her smile changed. It lost none of its warmth, but something in it sharpened into a blade, the smile of a being who had just been offered a game she was very confident she could win.
"No emotions," she said. "No attachments."
Her eyes glittered.
"Okay!"
Golden clouds bloomed around them!
Thick and warm, they poured out of Noah’s Provenance in soft, bright banks, rolling out through the frozen air and closing over both of them, and their figures vanished into the gold. Whatever sounds followed were between them, and the Basal Floor, cold and indifferent, did not care to listen!
The Basal Floor drifted on around the clouds, vast and cold and full of things that prowled in the dark.
And on the frozen island where a terrifying Hollow Night Lifeform had just been killed, atop the ruins of its shattered crown, Noah Osmont sought to understand a very unique lifeform!
---
<THE Infiniverse>
The golden shore of THE Infiniverse was quieter than ever.
Snow fell on it now! The farmland beyond the shore stretched away in long green rows, heavy with the crops his people had tended days ago, and the snow came down on all of it in soft white sheets, settling on the golden sand. It was not a blizzard here. Not yet as THE Infiniverse afforded a layer of protection.
The Counting of The Long Night pressed on everything, even inside his own Infiniverse!
Noah stood at the edge of the shore with a Kryos Existential Chorionic Gonadotropin turning slowly in his hand, pale blue and cold and humming, and he looked across the farmland at the figure sitting in the snow.
Thalia was meditating!
She sat cross-legged in the middle of a plowed field, her dark red hair loose around her shoulders, her hands resting on her knees. The snow gathered on her. It settled on her hair and on her lashes and on the tops of her bare feet, and she did not brush it off. Her eyes were closed. Her breathing was slow and even. Around her, the crops closest to her body had bent toward her, very slightly, as if she were a sun and they knew it.
Noah watched her for a while before he moved.
He had been thinking, amidst this apocalypse of snow, about the women who had helped him. There had been several. There had been more than several, and he had been loose with his affection, and he had not done right by most of them.
He had told Ling that on the Basal Floor. He had made a decision about it. No more carelessness. No more taking someone’s warmth and leaving them to wonder what it had meant.
If he was going to change that, he ought to start with the most recent one.
Thalia had come to him out of a white pool, bleeding, carrying warnings from a future. She had taught him the Sovereign Genesis. She had wept one tear when he remade his quarks, and called herself his destiny and his Provenance, and he had not yet given her much in return, except the decimation of her Lineage that was a causality from a decision they both made.
So he walked across the snow to her field, and knelt in front of her, and waited until she opened her eyes.
"You are back," Thalia said.
"I am back."
She looked at the Kryos in his hand! The pale blue light of it played across her face. She did not ask what it was.
"I brought you something," Noah said. "Two things, actually. One to show you, and one to give you."
He raised his free hand, and the air between them filled with a dream.
He showed her the Vasiliou Elsedimension. The white avenues, the frost-visage of Lucy, the Collector’s hazy vastness rewriting existence into a debt. He showed her the blow, the single strike that shattered everything the Collector had written, and the corpse, vast and ruined, and the mammoth of frost rising out of it.
He showed her the death of the being that had once promised to rip her in half.
Thalia watched it all with her hands still on her knees and her breathing still even. When the dream faded, she was quiet for a long moment. Then the corners of her mouth moved, just slightly, and her eyes were bright.
"He is gone," she said.
"Mmm."
"Good." She breathed out, and some tension Noah had never noticed in her, went out of her all at once. "Good."
The snow fell on them both.
"The second thing," Noah said.
He held out the Kryos.
"I want to help you form a Root." he said.
Thalia looked at the crystal, and then at him.
She held his gaze for a long time. Then she reached out, and her fingers closed around the Kryos, and the pale blue light ran up her arm and into her chest!
Her body shuddered. Her eyes widened. The Provenance within her brightened!
Noah had done this multiple times before as it was second nature now as he guided the formation of another Gonadotropin.
The Provenance within her was not swelling; the essense was focusing, each one narrowing down to a point so fine it could slip between the threads of a living thing’s existence and alter what it found there. Rewrite how a body was built. Reshape the code that made a being what it was, at the deepest level, where existence wrote its instructions.
A Root bloomed in her chest as it devoured the Kryos ECG!
It was small, and bright! And it turned with a quiet, surgical certainty that reminded Noah of her hands when she had traced a line on his chest.
A ROOT OF IMMENSITY has been formed.
Bearer: THALIA VASILIOU.
THE GENOMIC CHORIONIC GONADOTROPIN.
CONCEPTUAL ROOT OF IMMENSITY.
Nature: EXISTENTIAL GENOME ALTERATION. The bearer perceives and rewrites the foundational code of any existence she touches, including her own.
At its peak, nothing in existence is built in a way she cannot take apart and rebuild.
...!
Thalia breathed in sharply, and the farmland around them bloomed!
The crops nearest her shot up a foot in an instant, their leaves spreading wide, their colors deepening from green to a rich, vivid emerald. The plowed earth beneeth the snow stirred and settled into neater rows, as though it had just been told a better way to be soil. Even the snowflakes falling on her seemed to land more carefully, each one finding its place.
She opened her eyes, and they were different. Still grand, still warm. But behind the warmth, something moved with the calm, focused precision of a surgeon who has just been given a blade sharp enough to cut anything in existence.
Noah looked at her, and felt his own Root hum in answer, and smiled!
Then the snow grew heavier!
It came down harder across the whole of THE Infiniverse, on the golden shore and the farmland and the sleeping dreamers inside them. The Counting had noticed! One more Root in existence, one more weight on every other Root, and the cold answered it at once.
Noah lifted his face to the falling snow and let it land on him!
He was doing many things at this moment as his existence was also present...elsewhere.
---
In a small, utterly unknown world.
The desert was gone.
Noah stood in the sky above the small world where an old woman had once recited THE Augury of the Long Night to him by firelight, and the desert he remembered was buried. The dunes were white, and the black tents were white.
The blizzard howled across it!
It had been snowfall when he first placed his protection here. Gentle, strange, a thing the desert people had never seen and did not have a word for. Now it was a storm, and the storm was not gentle, and the people beneath it were hurting! He could feel them! Small, warm, fragile lives huddled around their fires, burning everything they had, and the cold eating through their walls anyway.
And this was not only here!
This was happening across trillions of worlds at once. Across uncounted realms, Observable Existences, and drifting Dimensions, in places Noah had never been and never would be, the same blizzard was falling on the same fragile lives. The ambient temperature of reality itself was dropping toward nothing, and there was no one standing over most of those lives as he was standing over these.
Two figures appeared beside him in the sky!
THE Infiniverse materialized on his left, her multicolored fur coat heavy with snow, her starlit eyes grave. Ruination appeared on his right, crimson beams sweeping the horizon, her coat of crimson and gold sharp against the white. Both of them looked down at the buried desert and said nothing, because there was nothing to say that the blizzard was not already saying.
Noah looked at them, and then out across the storm, and spoke.
"The frost is settling across countless regions at once. We did not author this winter, even if our hands are tangled somewhere in the thread. And we are not saviors walking the dark to be worshiped."
The snow whipped past all three of them!
"The billions of lives shivering on those far Dimensions do not know my face, and I will never learn their names. Pulling them into our shelter buys us no strategic advantage. It leaves no debt to collect, offers no return on the investment, and does nothing to halt the turning of the Night. It is completely, utterly unnecessary."
He paused. The blizzard filled the silence.
"It is merely my human sentimentality. A quiet, irrational refusal to let the frost take them all just because the sky decided to go cold."
He turned to them.
"So do not hesitate. Pull upon my Infinity. Open the borders of THE Infiniverse and swallow every Dimension and Observable Existence you can reach. Bring them into our warmth. We cannot carry the whole of existence, but where our reach extends, let us save as many as we can."
...!
Ruination’s crimson beams were already moving!
Her Root of the Record had grown grander than ever. She could find Dimensions now as a hawk finds mice in a field, rapidly, precisely, and without mercy toward the distance between them.
And THE Infiniverse was already opening!
Her Root of Genesis answered the command at once. The borders of her existence widened, and widened again, and kept widening, a living thing stretching herself to take in countless things into the warmth of her body because her Master had told her to, and because it was unnecessary, and because he was human.
Toward his words, they had only a single answer.
Yes, Master.
Below them, the buried desert began, very slowly, to rise. The whole world and small Observable Existence peeled away from its place in the freezing dark and drifted upward, into the open borders of THE Infiniverse, into the warmth, and the people inside their tents did not know what had saved them.
They only knew the wind had stopped being a blizzard as only light sprinkling of snow cascaded down!
