<THE Sealed One>THE Keepers of Existence was a Legacy that looked, from a distance, like something that should not exist during a winter.
Boundless seas of crimson gold rolled away in every direction beneath a sky that had no end, shining and warm, and rivers of the same color ran through them and above them in slow winding currents that crossed and parted and crossed again. Floating islands drifted across those seas, serene and green, some the size of small Dimensions, some no larger than a garden, and every one of them was blanketed in snow.
The blizzard reached even here. It howled across the crimson gold, and where the flakes touched the seas they hissed into threads of steam, and where they touched the islands they piled and stayed, white on green, cold settling over warmth.
It was a Legacy shared by dozens of Immense Ones, THE SLEEPLESS FIEND among them, each one a pillar holding the same roof. Those who served in it spoke its name as one speaks the name of a law, because that was what it was. THE Keepers of Existence. The ones who had kept things exactly as they were for longer than anything could remember!
At the heart of those seas, on a great dais of black iron rising from the crimson gold, THE Sealed One stood and looked at what had been brought to him.
A dozen Rare Gu hung in chains along the dais’s rim, strung up in black iron, each one a different strange and shining thing. A moth whose wings were written light, and a serpent with scales of closed eyes. Something like a jellyfish made of old brass bells. All of them silent, because the chains had been designed to keep them silent as they were filled with Immensity.
Beyond the Gu, a dozen Provenance Lifeforms knelt in a row with their heads bowed. Every one of them carried a Root of Immensity.
And at the very front, in the lightest chains of all, two figures.
THE Champion Alcaeus knelt with his broad back straight, bronze-skinned and scarred from his shouldrs to his heels, his long matted hair frozen with blood. He had been a champion. Now he did not look at THE Sealed One at all, only at the snow.
Beside him crouched THE Infinity Eater.
Behind THE Sealed One, the air split like an eyelid!
A vast dark eye looked out of it, sleepless, patient, burning with an attention that had never once blinked. Its face was barely perceptible behind the haze, but the mouth was visible, and it was smiling.
THE SLEEPLESS FIEND regards you.
"They say if you die, the door is forever lost. Existence will become harder and more brutal to live in, but many core members of this Legacy believe you are one of the core keys."
"Others, even here, believe differently."
"So you will be protected. Five Immense Ones on your security detail at all times. And they continue to fatten you up, like a pig."
The smile widened behind the haze.
"Now we are even giving you our own Descendants."
THE SLEEPLESS FIEND looked at THE Infinity Eater as he said this!
And the betrayal on THE Infinity Eater’s face was heavy.
It turned its great head, slowly, from the Fiend to THE Sealed One and back again, and its burning eyes held the Immense One, and there was not a single glimmer of respect in those vast dark pupils. Not a shred of decorum. Only the flat, enormous disbelief of a hound that has just been handed to the butcher by the man who raised it.
"I live in Infinity," THE Infinity Eater said, and its voice was the torrent of every voice it had ever swallowed. "My existence is grand. I was meant to form a glorious Immensity of Infinity. How could I be sitting before another like a meal right now? How could I be discarded so simply?"
THE Sealed One smiled!
He rose from where he sat and walked toward THE Infinity Eater, unhurried, his long dark coat trailing across the black iron. He stopped in front of it, close enough to touch, and looked up at its churning Infinity and its betrayed, burning eyes.
"You depended on the power of another to get what you had," THE Sealed One said, softly. "That is why you were discarded in the end. A rented coat always gets taken back when the cold comes. You built an entire life out of borrowed wood, and now you look surprised that the landlord kicked the door in to reclaim his timber."
His gold eyes held THE Infinity Eater.
"In a way, I am just like you right now. I lean on the power of Immense Ones to find my footing. I sit in their snow, I take their craft, and I learn their ways. But the difference between us is simple. I know what the bill looks like. I know they want something from me, and I want something from them. Two strangers striking a trade across an open fire before the wood burns out. And I will not need their fire for very long."
The Infinity Eater strained against its chains!
"You never understood the exchange," THE Sealed One went on, still soft. "You thought a master’s favor was love. You thought being a useful hound meant they would let you sleep by the hearth forever. But a hound that goes lame gets left behind in the brush."
He tilted his head. "Maybe if you had anything left to offer, they would not have thrown you into the ditch."
His mouth opened.
It kept opening!
His jaw came loose from his face and went on widening, the pale skin of his cheeks stretching thin as paper, lips peeling back and back until his mouth was no longer a mouth at all but a vast black opening, wider than he was tall, wider than THE Infinity Eater itself. Inside it there was no throat. Only dark, and a pale gold glint far, far down, like something very old at the bottom of a well.
"In existence," THE Sealed One whispered from inside that impossible mouth, "most things are discarded."
OOOOH!
THE Infinity Eater screamed!
It threw itself backward. The chains held. It clawed at the dais, infinity snapping, every swallowed voice howling out of it at once. THE Sealed One leaned forward, and swallowed it whole. The chains snapped like thread. The scream went down into the dark and stopped, and the jaws slid back into place, and he was a lean pale man in a long dark coat again, standing alone.
His whole body shone!
Pale gold light spread outward from his chest, bright, brighter, the Infinity of a thousand devoured beings churning through him, and his Root sat a little lighter.
Then he turned, shining, to the Champion and the Gu and the dozen Provenance Lifeforms shackled and bound before him with their flickering Roots.
He licked his lips!
Then he raised his arms, palms up, and let the snow fall on them. It settled on his open hands and on his shining coat and on his pale gold hair, and he smiled, brilliantly, the smile of a man standing in a garden he intended to eat.
"Existence... is so beautiful, isn’t it?"
