Noah touched his chest. He did it without thinking, as a man touches the place where something has changed inside him, and the moment his fingers rested over the center of himself, he felt it.
A tree!
It stood inside his existence, where his Root had always been, grown past anything a Root could be. A trunk of blue-gold light rose up out of the deepest place in him, broad and straight and huming, and it went up. And up!
And up, past the reach of his gold eyes and his Dream and his Infinity, climbing into an endless height he could sense, its end somewhere far beyond his sight. Branches waited in the dark above. A canopy, perhaps. He could feel the weight of it hanging up there.
Only the very base of the trunk was glowing!
He had lit it. Barely! A thin band of blue-gold light around the bottom of a tree that went on forever, and everything above that band dark, waiting.
THE Osmontian Chorionic Gonadotropin had become this. His Root, the spinning mobius he had carried since the Convocation, had taken everything poured into it, every Quintessential ECG, every Kryos, a dead Immense One and grown into something measured by a different scale entirely.
He stood very still with his hand on his chest, and the prompts came.
THE Osmontian Chorionic Gonadotropin has grown.
It is now THE Budding Dreaming Human Origin Tree.
Your evolution has lit its First Ring. The trunk above waits in the dark.
...!
Then the Tree laid its workings open to him, one by one!
The Tree has unlocked your Core Weaving of THE Feast That Seals. Its details are below.
Predation. Devour grand beings, and your Tree drinks them. What it drinks rises through the trunk as Sap. The Tree remembers the nature of all it drinks, and may grant you an Ability, a Provenance, or an Authority born of that nature. The grander the meal, the richer the Sap and the greater the yield.
Auto-Fusion. Whatever the Tree holds of a kind will fuse on its own into something higher. Abilities with Abilities. Provenances with Provenances. Authorities with Authorities. And, where their natures agree, across all three.
Giving. What you give with thought returns through THE Tide, and what returns feeds the Tree.
Judgment. Grow beyond what existence allows, and existence will judge you. Survive grand Judgments of your existence, and the Tree grows a Branch. Every Branch bears a Seal or an Unsealing.
Kin. Those you mark with your blood, or name as your own or grant kinship in unique ways, rise when your Tree rises.
Rings lit: 1.
Sap risen toward the First Bough: 0%.
When the Sap reaches the First Bough, your Tree will flower, and you will advance.
Judgment Debt: 1. Existence will remember.
...!
Noah almost laughed. He had devoured a dead Immense One and an Ergosphere and survived a Judgment from existence itself, and evolved into a lifeform no record held a name for, and the Tree looked down at him from its endless height and showed him one lit ring and an empty measure of Sap.
Fair enough. He had barely lit the base!
Then the last prompt came, larger than the others!
Your Tree has grown its first Branch.
You devoured the Provenances of Ending, Order, and Stillness while existence struck you with them. They were the substance of the Severing. Your Tree has drunk them.
THE First Unsealing: THE Door of Immensity.
You may open the closed door for a being who holds a Root.
When they reach for Immensity, the Severing will come for them. You may stand within it beside them, and hold their Root together while it tries to cut them apart.
If they endure, they may establish their Immensity.
Existence will judge every such attempt. You must fight that Judgment each time.
Each attempt adds to your Judgment Debt.
...!
Noah went still!
Low on the trunk of the endless tree inside him, just above the thin lit band at its base, he felt it. A single Branch, newly grown, reaching out from the blue-gold wood, heavy with something that hummed in the same pitch as the closed door at the top of his old existence.
Behind him, Ruination’s crimson beams had locked onto the prompt and stopped scrolling. THE Infiniverse had taken a single step forward.
He read it again.
Minerva, on the Plain of Accord, reaching for Immensity with everything she had. The door shutting in her face. Her Root splitting down the middle with a sound like a great tree breaking, green light pouring out of her like blood, while a stranger’s voice spoke through her mouth and swore no new Immensity would rise.
He could have stood beside her in that!
He could have held her Root together while the Severing tried to cut it apart, and fought whatever came down from above, and given her a chance to stand up on the other side of the door.
His thoughts ran, fast and clear.
Thalia, with her Root of genome alteration, who could unmake and rebuild the code of anything she touched. Emotive, with a Physical Root of Emotion and a singularity of failed Immensity in her hands. Ling, who was a Root from her skin to her core. Every one of his people with Kryos sitting in their dreams right now, slowly seeding Roots of their own.
Every one of them, someday, might reach for the door.
And when they did, he could reach with them. They were Kin. When they rose, his Tree would rise with them.
Oh!
Noah breathed out slowly, his hand still resting over the endless tree in his chest.
Then he smiled!
It was a small smile, and a far from gentle one.
Noah looked at the line about Kin again.
Those you mark with your blood, or name as your own...
His Tree had risen. He could feel it inside him, the endless blue-gold trunk with its single lit ring and its first Branch humming in the dark. He had been dreamed into a new lifeform, devoured an Immense One, survived the Judgment of existence itself.
And around him, everything sat exactly as before.
Ruination stood where she had stood. THE Infiniverse stood beside her. Far away in THE Infiniverse, the Dream Engine hummed on as it always had, his people sleeping and dreaming on the golden shore.
His hand closed into a fist!
Instead of waiting for the Tree, he dreamed it.
He dreamed his family rising. All of them, every life he held dear, every person sleeping in the Dream Engine with a Kryos seeded in their dreams, every one of them climbing with him as the Tree had promised. He poured that dream down into the trunk inside his chest with everything he had, and the whole Domain trembled with it.
"I have had my transformation," Noah said.
His voice was low, and very hard.
"It is my dream to elevate my family alongside me. So why hasn’t it begun?"
...!
The Tree answered!
Kin recognized.
Your Dream has been heard. THE Feast That Seals carries it down every thread that binds you to your own.
Kin Evolution has begun.
...!
Light bloomed behind him!
Hazy cocoons of blue and gold were rising arround Ruination and THE Infiniverse, soft and shining, wrapping them in slow bands of light. Ruination’s crimson beams flickered and went quiet as the haze closed over her face. THE Infiniverse’s coat of many colors vanished into the gold. Both of them welcomed it. Both of them turned their eyes to Noah as the cocoons sealed shut, and the last thing he saw of their faces before the light swallowed them was joy.
And across THE Infiniverse, the Dream Engine began to glow!
He felt it through the threads. His people, dreaming on the golden shore, every one of them carrying a Kryos he had sent into their dreams. One after another, the light found them. His mother, sleeping beneath her blankets, wrapped in a cocoon of soft blue. Seo-yeon, curled small, glowing gold. Henry. Adelaide. Barbatos, deep in her necropolis with the Warden’s corpse beside her, cocooned in green-tinged gold while her raised dead stood around her in silent watch.
Eon. Naldine. Ul’moreth. Thalia.
And Emotive!
Her cocoon was the brightest of all!
It rose around her in the reimagined Earliest Folds, among the broken statues of him she still had yet to let him fix, and it shone in every color. Every color there was, shifting and burning at once, crimson rage and violet longing and gold joy and a deep, endless, bottomless blue of grief, all of it pouring out of her in waves as the cocoon closed.
Her Physical Root of Emotion drank in the Kin light, and the Stillborn Singularity she still held against her chest flickered in answer, there and gone and there. Her whole dream shook with the weight of what she fellt. The towers of THE Loom bent toward her. The statues of him turned their stone heads!
She was laughing as the cocoon closed. Laughing, and crying!
His fist slowly opened.
—
Far below, on the frozen plain at the edge of the northern rift of THE Undersnow, Ling had kept her eyes on him the whole time.
She hung in the dark beside the body of Noah that had stayed in THE Undersnow, the body that had fought the Warden and lain on its chest and taken its Dream. And she had watched that body change.
It had happened while he stood still. His diamond-jade skin had darkened to the deep black of a sky at night, constellations of blue-gold drifting slow beneath it. His hair had gone white-gold and weightless. Two great horns of radiance had swept back from his brow, rooted in his skull, and a faint ring of light had begun turning behind his shoulders. And when he had opened his eyes, they had been gold. Pure gold, all the way through, empty of pupils.
Ling had gone very quiet, watching! Her hands rested on her knees. Her mouth was a little open.
Then her existence pulsed!
It came from the very center of her, from the Root that was her whole being, a single deep throb that shook her from her skin to her core. She gasped. Her hand flew to her chest.
And in front of Noah’s gold eyes, the prompts rose.
Among your Kin, only one has a foundation already established and ready to take a step toward Immensity.
Ling has been loosely designated as part of your Kin, due to your seed that remains within her.
Her existence is already saturated.
Her own evolution is beginning.
