Chapter 5822: Kin! II

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

Ling’s hand was still pressed to her chest when her existence began to reach.

All of her, every part of the Root that was her whole being, had begun to stretch upward, toward something far above both of them in the frozen dark. Threads of her lifted off her skin, pale and shining, rising like steam off warm water in wintter. Her ribbons, long lost in the battles, seemed to drift back into being around her wrists out of nothing. The air around her went thin and bright and very cold.

She was reaching for Immensity.

And she knew it!

Her face went white. She clutched at her chest with both hands as though she could hold herself down, and the threads kept rising regardless, pulling at her, drawing her upward toward the door she had watched slam shut on the Plain of Accord.

In a rush of half-sentences, she told him what she was feeling. Terror, first!

The door was shut. Everyone knew it was shut. She had watched Minerva’s Root break in half on the snow, watched the green light pour out of her like blood. And now her own existence was reaching for that same door, by itself, without asking her, and she was helpless to stop it!

"I’m not doing this," Ling said. Her voice was heavy! "I’m not, it’s just, it’s going on its own, and if it reaches the door I’m going to, I’ll be just like her, I’ll be..."

Noah floated down to her.

He put a hand on her shoulder. His fingers rested on the blue silk, and through them she could feel the weight of him.

"It’s okay," he said.

She stared at him.

"Your existence is reaching because it is ready. Reach. When the door comes for you, I will be standing in it with you."

She looked at him for a long, trembling moment.

Then the fear in them changed.

It hardened. Her hands came away from her chest and closed into fists, and her powerful thighs coiled under her, and her whole body began to hum!

WUU!

"Fine," Ling said.

She threw back her head and roared.

"Fine! FINE! You want to cut me apart? You want to tell me no? Fuck you! Fuck the door, fuck the cold, fuck every voice that ever said no new Immensity! Come and get me, then!"

BOOM!

And she gathered herself!

Every thread of her that had been drifting upward, she took hold of. She pulled them in, wound them tight, drew every scrap of her existence into a single burning point at the center of her body, and then she flung it all upward at once. Toward Immensity. Toward everything that had been shut against her.

The Basal Floor went white!

Far above them, in the frozen dark, a hazy door appeared.

It hung above Ling, vast and pale and sealed, and as she reached for it, the cold came down.

It fell from the door like a blade of blue-white winter, long and thin and absolute, the same color as the eyes that had looked out of Minerva’s face. It came down straight toward the center of Ling’s Root, meaning to split her in two, exactly as it had split the Progeny on the Plain of Accord.

Noah rose to meet it.

The Branch on his Tree hummed!

THE First Unsealing: THE Door of Immensity.

A Kin reaches for Immensity. You may stand within the Severing beside her.

...!

He stood above Ling, between her and the falling blade, and opened his hand.

The Severing struck his palm!

It cut. It was made to cut Roots, and it found the Tree that stood where his Root had been, and it bit into him like the edge of the whole Long Night at once. Pain went through him from his hand to his core. His skin split along his palm and blue-gold light poured out. But his hand held its place, and the blade stayed above Ling.

Below him, she kept reaching. Her existence was climbing, burning, pulling upward toward the door, and the Severing kept trying to find a way past him to her Root, and every time it slid, he moved, and every time it pressed, he held.

He reached down with his other hand, past the blade, and laid it over the center of her Root.

He held it together.

The Severing pressed down on her Root through his hand, trying to find the seam that would let it split her, and he gave it none. His Dream poured into her Root and wrapped it, held it, pressed every part of it close, until the only thing left for the blade to cut was him!

And then the Judgment came!

Obsidian gold. It tore open the sky above the door, the same cold old light that had crashed into his Domain, and it fell on him with all its weight.

HOW DARE YOU.

...!

It landed on his shoulders like a mountain range. His knees bent. His crown of radiance flared. The obsidian gold pressed down on him from above while the Severing pressed up against his palm from below, and between the two of them, his whole existence groaned.

It smashed down with the same Provenances he had devoured before!

He held on!

Below his hands, Ling reached the door.

It opened in silence!

And Noah did something new under the whole of existence. He let her go through it inside his Dream.

Blue-gold light poured down out of his hand into the center of her, out of the endless Tree in his chest, out of every dream he had ever dreamed. Its source was him; the door merely stood open above them. Ling passed through it wrapped entirely in his Dream, and on the other side of it, what took shape in her was something the door had given no one before her.

Immensity, dreamed.

It came into her slowly, solemnly, like something sacred being set into place. Her Root, already her whole existence, began to unfurl. It grew in depth rather than size. Layer upon layer of her opened, each one revealing another beneath it, and each layer filled with blue-gold dream and kept it.

Threads ran from the deepest of those layers up into Noah’s hand, and through his hand to the Tree in his chest, binding her new Immensity to the place it had been dreamed from. Her existence stretched outward from the small round-faced girl in blue silk into something vast, something that pressed against the frozen dark of the Basal Floor and kept pressing, until the dark gave way.

She rose.

Her silk dress darkened into the deep blue of the sky at dusk, embroidered now with burning lines of light in place of gold thread, lines that ran and shifted across it. Loose from its buns, her hair spread around her in a great dark cloud, and through it wound ribbons of white flame, long and slow and living. Her powerful legs blazed with blue-gold dream-light from hip to heel, every line of muscle lit from within, so bright they were hard to look at. Behind her, purple fire bloomed, the same deep violet as the torches in her father’s cavern, wreathing her shoulders in a slow, steady burn.

And her eyes opened.

They were white. Pure white, all the way through, without a pupil anywhere in them. Exactly like her father’s.

The Severing shattered against Noah’s palm!

It broke into a thousand blue-white shards and faded into nothing. Above him, the obsidian gold Judgment shuddered, and pressed down one last time, and withdrew into the sky, and the sky closed behind it.

The Severing has been withstood.

The Judgment has been withstood.

Judgment Debt: 2. Existence will remember.

Kin Evolution: Ling has established a Dream Immensity.

A Dream Immensity is formed within your Dream, and rooted in it. It is Immensity, true and whole, yet it answers to the Dream that bore it rather than to the door.

It grows as your Tree grows. Its threads are bound to you.

Your Tree drinks from the rising of its Kin.

Sap risen toward the First Bough: 14%.

...!

The door above them faded. The Basal Floor’s frozen dark rushed back in around them, and Ling hung in the middle of it, vast and shining, her white eyes fixed on Noah.

She spoke, and existence carried it.

I am THE Dancer in the Boundless Dream.

I am lucky enough to attain Immensity when I had absolutely no reason to.

I am...grateful.

A pause, and her white eyes narrowed with something very like her old cheerful grin.

So let me thank you properly, Big Boy.

...!

She moved!

With no wind-up at all, one moment she hung before him, and the next her leg was already swinging, thick and powerful and blazing with dreamed Immensity, coming at him with the whole weight of something newly risen behind it!

Noah raised his hand.

That was all. One open hand, lifted calmly into the path of her kick.

Boundless dream unfurled from it!

Blue-gold light poured out of his palm in an endless tide, wave after wave of it, soft and infinite, rolling out to meet her leg. Her Immensity crashed into it. And the dream took it. All of it. The whole weight of a kick carrying Dream Immensity, absorbed into a tide of dream with no far wall, held in his single open hand.

Her leg stopped a hand’s width from his palm.

The force of it went on.

BOOOOM!

Out around them it went, in every direction at once, a ring of pure released Immensity tearing out across the Basal Floor, and everything it touched broke. Floating islands cracked in half and spun away. Torn Dimensions shattered like dropped glass. The jammed frozen plain around the northern rift split into a thousand peices and fell apart into the dark, and the cold-filled trees snapped and toppled, and the crack ran on and on, out past anything One’s eyes could follow, until half of the Basal Floor lay in ruin around them, broken and drifting, destroyed by a single kick that had stopped short of its target.

And in the middle of all of it, Noah stood with his hand raised and his gold eyes calm, holding back the leg of a Dream Immensity with nothing but his palm and the Dream it had risen from.

Ling looked at him over her own blazing knee.

Her white eyes went wide!

Noah held his hand where it was, open in the frozen dark, Ling’s blazing leg resting a hand’s width from his palm.

He looked at it.

His hand. The same hand that had once thrown fireballs in a dilapidated city, the hand that had killed apes and bears and turtles and dragons, the hand that had grasped Beasts and Demons and Celestials!

The hand that had shaken under the weight of a stone in a dead domain, that had held a dying Steed’s haed and pressed a cure into an ancient line of script. Night-dark now, constellations drifting under the skin, a split still healing across the palm where the Severing had bitten him.

And it had just stopped the full weight of an Immensity!

Something rose in his chest!

It came up from the part of him the evolution had kept human and made infinite. It was warm, and loud, and it shook, far removed from the cold, far-away clarity of the infinite dream where every path was already walked.

He had done it!

All those years. The apocalypses, and the fear, and the first clumsy skills. Every time he had looked up at something vast and known in his bones that it could end him with a glance. Every time he had told himself he would get there, someday, somehow.

Today, an Immense One had kicked him with everything she had.

And he had stopped it with one hand!

His eyes stung. He had gold eyes now, pupil-less, eyes that saw everything as it truly was, and they were burning at the edges like any man’s. His throat had gone tight. He was laughing, a little, under his breath! He felt like he was laughing and crying at the emotions infinitely stretching across him!

So this was it. The human side of what he had become. The part that would always feel everything, infinitely.

It felt like this as it was glorious!

Ling was still staring at him over her knee, white eyes wide.

Noah let the feeling run all the way through him. He let it rise and rise until it filled him from his crown to his heels.

Then he moved!

His hand left her leg and came up, and came down. Straight down, swung like a hammer, toward the center of Ling’s forehead!

It was fast. So fast that the frozen dark between them seemed to skip. And it carried something with it, riding on the edge of the swing, a dream he was dreaming for the first time: extinction.

Ending without remainder, without return, the dream of a thing simply ceasing to have ever been.

Ling’s entire existence buzzed!

Her new Dream Immensity screamed alarm through every layer of her at once, and her white eyes flew wider, and her body was still deciding which way to move when the hand arrived.

It stopped!

A finger’s breadth from her forehead, his palm hung perfectly still. The dream of extinction riding on it went quiet and drew back into him, tucked away, gone. The wind of the swing caught up a moment later and blew her hair back from her face in one great dark rush.

She forgot to breathe as only now did she begin heaving as if she had escaped death.

For a long moment, both of them stayed perfectly still. She stared at his hand. He stared at her face. Her lips had parted. Her white eyes were enormous.

Then his hand turned.

Slowly, gently, it moved from her forehead to the side of her face, and rested there, his palm warm against her cheek, his thumb under the curve of her jaw. She leaned into it before she seemed to know she was doign it.

He pulled her in, and kissed her!

Ling made a small, startled sound against his mouth. Then her hands found the back of his neck and gripped hard, her fingers sinking into his weightless white-gold hair, and she kissed him back with the whole fierce, cheerful, foul-mouthed force of her, a newly risen Dream Immensity wrapped around him in the ruins of half the Basal Floor.

Golden clouds bloomed around them.

They rose out of Noah on their own, soft and thick and shining, rolling up over the two of them and closing like curtains around a bed. The ruined islands vanished, and the drifting shards of shattered Dimensions, and the frozen dark. There was only gold, and warmth, and the two of them inside it.

His human side wanted much more for the sake of...research.

He let it have its way!
