Chapter 5823: Immensity! I

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The golden clouds thinned a long while later, and the frozen dark of the Basal Floor came back in pieces.

Noah lay on his back on a drift of dream with Ling asleep against his chest, her dark hair spread across both of them, one blazing leg hooked over his.

He might have been a bit...relentless.

Above them, half of a destroyed Floor drifted in silence. Islands split down their middles turned slowly in the cold. Shards of shattered Dimensions hung like broken windows, each one still holding a sliver of whatever sky it had once looked out on. Snow fell through all of it, unhurrid, as though nothing at all had happened here.

The Tree in his chest hummed.

He listened to it for a while. One lit ring at the base of an endless trunk. A single Branch with the Unsealing hanging from it. Sap sitting low in the wood, waiting. He had evolved into a lifeform no record held a name for, and he understood...only a little about what that meant.

That had to change!

So he began to test!

He started with the part of him that was human, and let himself worry, on purpose. He thought of the cocoons in the Dream Engine, of his mother and Seo-yeon and Henry sealed in light, of Emotive burning in every color with a stolen singularity against her chest. The worry rose, as worry does. And then it kept rising. It fed itself. It generated more of itself without end, and every bit of it poured into him as strength, a slow warm pressure filling his limbs.

He let it run for a full minute, then tried to set it down.

It went quiet when he asked, and stayed, a low warmth under everything.

Results showed that... his emotions were fuel, endless, a well that would keep giving forever. They would also keep speaking forever, under everything. He would have to carry every feeling he had for the rest of his existence, and carry it well.

Next, the Dreamer.

He turned his gold eyes on the nearest broken island, a slab of ice split clean in two with a frozen forest on each half, and dreamed it whole. The halves drifted together, and the crack sealed from the bottom up, ice knitting to ice, roots finding roots across the seam, until the forest stood! He stopped dreaming, and it stayed. It was simply an island again, real, as though the kick had passed it by.

He widened the dream. Ten islands came together around him. Then a hundred, a whole archipelgo of frozen land reassembling itself in the dark, cold-filled trees righting themselves, shattered Dimensions folding their broken skies back into frames for Gigaparsecs.

At the edge, the truth began to thin. The farthest islands held together, but loosely, their seams faint, as though they might remember being broken if anything struck them hard enough.

So...what he dreamed near him became true, and the reach grew with his attention. Spread it too far and the truth wore thin at the edges.

Then the Sovereign.

He opened his mouth, and the blue-gold brilliance inside it looked out onto the ruin, and he pulled. Everything that remained of the destruction came to him: Dimensional shards too broken to dream back, the lingering cold of the Warden soaked into the drifting ice, the faint residue of fifty-five Guards’ patrols still hanging in the dark like old footprints. It all streamed into the event horizons inside him and went down as he literally devoured nearly a forth of THE Basal Floor of THE Undersnow.

The Tree drank!

|Predation: residue of THE Basal Floor.|

|Sap risen toward the First Bough: 17%.|

|Auto-Fusion: Provenance of Stillness + the lingering cold of THE Warden Who Does Not Rise.|

|Formed: Authority of the Held Breath (Minor). Whatever you hold in your gaze, you may still for a moment.|

...!

"...Hmm."

He tried it at once. He looked at a falling snowflake and held it. It stopped in the air, perfectly still, for the space of a breath. Then it fell on.

A bit useless, but okay!

Last, his eyes.

He looked down at Ling!

The Gold Without Pupils showed her as she truly was. A girl asleep, round-faced, her lips parted. And beneath that, her Dream Immensity, deep and shining, layer on layer, every layer bound by fine bright threads that ran up out of her chest and into his Tree.

She looked like a pulsing nervous system that rapidly circulated golden pulses of Immensity as her entire body buzzed.

Deep, compared to anything he had been a day ago. Shallow, compared to the depth he could feel in the Thinker even from here, a pressure at the very edge of his senses, like the pull of a sea far below a cliff.

He checked the Kin next, through the Dream Engine. Every cocoon still closed, still glowing. Ruination and THE Infiniverse in their bands of blue-gold haze in the Root Domain. His mother in soft blue. Seo-yeon curled small in gold. And Emotive’s cocoon, brightest of all, burning every color at once, the Singularity flickering against her chest like a heartbeat.

Then the sliver he had left on the Thinker’s mountain screamed at him!

The pressure on it spiked. Through it, Noah felt the purple coat of Immensity around the mountain buckle inward, as though something enormous had leaned its whole weight against it, and the coat had bent.

Ling woke!

She opened her white eyes and looked at his face, and whatever she saw there brought her upright in an instant. She asked what was wrong.

"Some invaders into the Legacy. Something is pressing on your father’s Immensity hard enough to bend it."

...!

She was on her feet before he finished.

Her father’s mountain was her home!

But...

"Don’t worry."

He told her calmly, his endlessly gold eyes without pupils calming her down completely!!

He gathered himself, and the Basal Floor fell away!

---

In the cavern, the sliver filled. It swelled from a thread of attention into the whole of him, night-dark and crowned, constellations drifting under his skin, his white-gold hair lifting off his shoulders.

Noah opened his gold eyes on the prayer mat.

Across from him, the Thinker’s great beads stopped clicking. The kneeling giant turned his weeping, pupil-less eyes toward him and regarded him for a long moment.

|"You seem a bit...different,"| the Thinker said mildly.

Noah didn’t reply to these words as he looked up through the stone of the mountain, and for the first time in his existence, he saw the Immense as they truly were.

Before, they had been hazes. Thrones on golden clouds with shapes too deep to resolve, auras that pressed and loomed and gave him nothing to hold. Now his gold eyes went through the cavern ceiling and the mountain’s peak and the torn purple coat above it, out into the sky of THE Legacy of THE Acharya of Immensity, and the hazes were gone.

The Legacy was at war, and he could see every one of its warriors!

First, he saw Sir Moriarty!

The octopus-headed visage still hung across the sky, obsidian veined with gold, crimson eyes blazing over the walled domains. But the visage was only the part that showed. Beneath it, Noah’s eyes followed the rest of Moriarty down, and down. The great body coiled through the foundations of the Legacy itself.

Its tentacles ran through every Existential Conduit as roots run through soil, threaded under the purple-gold rivers, wrapped around the bases of the thousand mountains, braided through the snow-buried floor. Some of those tentacles were older than the mountains they held up.

The Legacy was defended by Moriarty. In places, the Legacy was Moriarty.

And all through that vast coiled body, faint and sick, ran threads of poisonous green!

Noah let his gaze move across the walled domains.

On one mountain, THE Ashen Cantor stood in a robe of grey cinders with his mouth open, singing. Each note struck a golden sphere of foreign Immensity and unwrote a piece of it, gold peeling away from the sphere in long flakes and drifting off into nothing.

On a peak to the east, THE Keeper of the Unbroken Vow stood with a chain wrapped three times around an invader, and the chain was made of oaths, every promise ever kept in the Legacy hammered link by link into iron. The invader strained against it, and every link held!

Farther off, THE Lantern of the Last Shore, a tall robed figure with no face beneath the hood, lifted a lamp whose light showed the dead where to go, and the invaders it touched turned and began to walk that way, slowly, as though they had remembered somewhere they were meant to be. And over the Firmament, THE Hollow Choir hung in a ring of hollow faces, and their silence fell on the enemies below like a crushing tide.

Every one of them was deep. Deeper than anything Noah could measure!

And every one of them was different!

He turned to the Thinker.

"Why do some burn brighter than others?" he asked.

The Thinker considered the question as though it were a stone he had been handed, turning it over between his great fingers.

|"Oh? Can you actually see Immensity at this time? Hmm...Well, what makes a well deep?"| he asked in return.

Noah waited.

|"Immensity is depth,"| THE Thinker said at last, |"not height. Everyone who first reaches it believes they have climbed. They have dug. And depth is measured in what one has carried through the Ages. A young Immensity is shallow, and loud, because it has carried little and wishes everyone to know it has carried anything at all. An old one is quiet."|

His beads clicked once. |"There is more to it than that. As the big guy said, there are levels to this."|

Noah looked back out at the war.

Now that he knew what to look for, he could see it. The invading spheres were not all alike. Some blazed and roared, gold flaring, straining loudly against their walls: young, he guessed, only a few Ages into their Immensity. Others hung almost still, dim and patient, and those seemed far too heavy.

"A war between the depths of wells," Noah said quietly.

"Each one deeper than the last. Each one sure it holds the water that matters. And I am standing at the edge of all of them with a Tree whose roots have only just reached the water."

He watched a golden sphere flake apart under the Cantor’s song. "It is a strange thing, to finally see the size of the sky and know you cannot touch it yet."

The Thinker said nothing to that. But his beads went still for a moment, and then resumed.

Then Noah turned his gold eyes on his host.

For a while he had sat across from THE Thinker. He had seen the kneeling giant, the boulder beads, the weeping eyes and the fierce almost-smile and the purple torches along the walls. He had felt the depth of him at the edge of his senses, as one feels the drop beyond the edge of a cliff in the dark.

Now he saw it!

The kneeling giant was a fraction, the smallest part, a single bead on a much longer string. Behind him, the mountain was him; every stone of it carried his Immensity, every vein of ore, every torch. And behind the mountain, beneath it, around it, ran a depth that went down in every direction at onec, purple fire burning along it like torches lit at intervals down a shaft whose floor lay past any sight. Noah looked, and looked, and found no bottom.

The gash on the Thinker’s back leaked Immensity in a slow, steady river. Noah had thought of it as a wound. Through his new eyes it was a river wide enough to drown the Legacy’s largest Conduit, and it was still only the trickle escaping from a sea.

That trickle held more Immensity than multiple invading sphere in the sky combined!

Holy fucking shit. These beings were actually monsters!

Noah very nearly looked away!

|THE Thinker at the End of Existence.|

|Depth: beyond perception.|

...!

The Thinker turned his great head and looked back at him, and the fierce line of his mouth softened, very slightly.

Then the Thinker’s gaze moved past Noah, to the mouth of the cavern, and beyond it, to the sky.

Noah followed it!

At the edge of the walled domain that held the mountain, Moriarty’s obsidian-gold mist had thinned. In one small place only. Something green was threading through it from the inside, fine and patient, a single living tendril finding its way along a seam in the wall that nobody else would have known was there. And it was coming straight at them!

The Thinker’s beads clicked once.

|"You...get to see me stretch my muscles it seems."|

...!
