Chapter 5825: Immensity! III

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The Fiend’s gaze rested on Noah for a long, quiet moment.

He smiled a little, and turned back to the Thinker’s burning bead, as though he had decided to save Noah for later.

The Hound had decided otherwise!

It came again, harder, and this time the Gilt Heir tore himself free of the Thinker’s bead and came with it, gold blazing, sword drawn, a young lord’s face twisted with the humiliaton of having laughed too soon. Two Immense Ones, coming for Noah at once!

Noah opened his dream.

Ling came out of it!

She burst from the blue-gold light like a thrown spear, white eyes blazing, legs lit from hip to heel with dream-light, purple fire roaring off her shoulders. The Gilt Heir saw her a heartbeat too late.

Her kick took him across the chest!

BOOM!

He flew across the cavern and slammed into the far wall, and the wall held, because it was the Thinker’s wall. The Gilt Heir peeled himself off it, gold armor dented, his face white with calm shock.

"You..." he said. "You’re the old man’s brat?"

"And you’re a dumb motherfucker," Ling said. She rolled her neck. "Come here."

He came. She met him!

Newly risen against a somewhat established Immensity, gold against dream, his sword against her legs, and every exchange shook the mountain!

Oh!

She was shallower than he was, a Dream Immensity only an hour old against a few Ages of gold, and she held him anyway, laughing and cursing and kicking until his armor rang like a struck bell. He fought like a man more surprised than serious.

Which left Noah, and the Hound!

It came at him across the cavern floor, and Noah decided to experiment. He let himself be afraid.

The fear rose and fed itself and poured into him as strength. Anger followed, hot and steady: at the Fiend for walking into his host’s home, at the Verdant Regard for her betrayal, at all of them for coming to take him like a parcel. It fed itself too. The more he felt, the more of him there was!

That was the Human in him!

The Hound’s jaws came down where he stood, and closed on an echo.

Noah had dreamed the space around himself into his own. Inside it, the Hound’s lunge arrived already spent, its jaws snapping shut on the place he had been a dream ago. Its paw landed slow and dull, its force bleeding away into the dream. Its Immensity tried to close on him again, and slid off a sky.

That was the Dreamer!

And every blow that broke against his dream shed fine grey residue, like sparks off a whetstone. Noah opened his mouth and drank it.

That was the Sovereign!

Predation: residue of THE Hound of Thresholds.

Sap risen toward the First Bough: 26%.

Auto-Fusion: Authority of the Held Breath + Provenance of Order + residue of an Immense One’s reach.

Formed: Authority of the Unclosing Hand. That which tries to close upon you finds itself held open.

...!

The Hound lunged again, and its jaws locked wide open in mid-bite, held by nothing. It wrenched free and backed away, its eyes narow.

Noah decided to test something else.

The Bow of the Ending Epoch dreamed itself into his hand. He drew, an arrow of compressed Epochs forming along the string, and loosed it into the Hound’s grey chest from ten paces.

It went in!

The hide around the wound withered, cracked, wore toward bone through a thousand Ages in an instant.

Then the Hound’s Immensity swallowed the Ages whole, as a calm sea swallows a stone. The hide filled back in, the scratch closed, and the Hound shook itself once and smiled with marvel!

"Wow! He might be the real deal! He is a bit weak, but this is definitely Immensity! How the hell is he displaying Immensity? I see why we want to kidnap him!"

...!

The words were heavy.

Noah lowered the bow. Killing it lay beyond him, for today.

"It seems that Immensity is deep," he said. His voice boomed out grandly. "I can see how deep. My eyes go down through you, Age after Age, and I can see that your bottom is very far, and that I cannot reach it."

He let the bow fade from his hand.

"I do not need to reach it today. I only need you to understand that you cannot reach me either. And someday, your bottom will be in reach."

The Hound of Thresholds, which had hunted every opening in existence for longer than Noah’s whole species had existed, pulsed with wonder.

The Fiend stepped off the Thinker’s bead.

Immensity raged as the Thinker was swarmed on all sides, the Hound turning its attacks on him to keep him busy, and THE Sleepless Fiend walked toward Noah. With every step, the stone under his feet darkened into crimson gold, and the air he passed through grew warm and faintly sweet, as air does in a room that belongs to someone else.

Across the cavern, Ling and the Gilt Heir broke apart to watch.

Noah looked at the Fiend with his gold eyes, and this time, he looked all the way!

The tall figure in dark robes was only a skin on something enormous. Beneath it, the Fiend went down and out in every direction, a vastnes built entirely of eyes that had stayed open since their making. Each one watched a different place the Fiend had touched once and so owned forever: a city, a sea, a Dimension, a child asleep in a cot.

From the vastness ran threads, hundreds of thousands of them, each one down a lineage the Fiend had sired across the Ages, Descendants hanging from them like fruit from a vine. One ran toward the Krazhor-Nul. One had been cut, recently, its end hanging loose and bleeding.

Around his head rested a crown of chains, every link a promise someone had made to him and was bound to keep.

And everything near him, stone and air and light, was being rewritten into what he wished it to be, all the way down to what each thing was!

THE Sleepless Fiend.

Profundity: Unknown.

...!

The Fiend stopped an arm’s length away.

"Osmont," he said. "That is what they call you, yes?"

His voice was warm and pleased.

"That was very well done. I may even change the course of plans and mission we were given here today."

He clasped his hands behind his back.

"The Keepers of Existence have a seat open. I would like you to take it. You would have protection beyond anything this Legacy can offer, beyond anything the old man there can offer, dying as he is. You would have resources. Teachers. Every Gu and every Immense corpse you could wish to eat. And when the one who will open the door finally stands before it, you would stand at his side."

His countless eyes all turned toward Noah at once. "You would be valued. Kept. Fed. You would be made grand. You may just have to...offer your heart."

...!

Noah looked at him.

"No," he said.

That was all.

The Fiend’s smile warmed.

"Of course," he said.

He lifted a single finger and laid it, almost gently, on the edge of Noah’s dream.

Ownership flowed out of it!

Crimson gold bloomed outward from that one point like ink in still water. Star after star in Noah’s dream changed color, and he felt each one stop being his. The sky that had held the Hound’s hand and dreamed islands back together was becoming someone else’s, one light at a time!

HUUM!

Noah poured everything he had into that single point!

The Tree in his chest blazed, every ring and Branch and drop of Sap lit at once, and dream rushed out of him to meet the Fiend’s finger, tide against tide. A crimson gold star went blue-gold again. Another went crimson. Then back.

It was terrifying. He felt he could slip at any moment!

He held for an instant. Just an instant. Any longer, and he knew he would be crushed, and face his first death since his evolution!

A bead of purple fire slid between them!

It drifted into the space between the Fiend’s finger and Noah’s dream, burning steadily. The Thinker had still not risen. His eyes were still closed. One of his moons had simply decided to be there.

The Fiend withdrew his finger, unhurried, and regarded the bead with mild amusement, then the old man on his mat, then Noah.

The crimson gold drained out of the stars, and every one of them went blue-gold again.

Noah stood inside his dream, chest heaving, infinite emotions burning all through him.

He looked into the Fiend’s countless eyes, every one of them watchng him.

And he smiled!

It was an affirmation he wanted to make, that he could at leasy defend himself! Even if only for an instant!

At this time, far above them, through the mountain and the torn coat and Moriarty’s mist, the whole Legacy began to hum, and a brilliant light began heading their way!

The Thinker opened his weeping eyes and breathed out a calm sigh.

Finally, the help would be arriving!
