Chapter 5826: Immensity! IV

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

The note rose, and rose, and THE Legacy of THE Acharya of Immensity woke.

Noah felt it through the soles of his feet first. A deep vibration climbing up out of the mountain’s roots, out of the rivers below, out of the snow-buried floor of the whole Legacy. Then his gold eyes caught it, and he saw what Lucy had built.

It was a single thing!

The purple-gold rivers and the Existential Conduits rising out of them, the thousand Elsedimension Mountains with their monasteries and thrones and caverns, the Plain of Accord, the Firmament, the Keepers’ Roads winding between the peaks, the floor of snow beneath it all.

He had always seen them as parts of a place. They were parts of one body. An Immensity, woven into the shape of a home and laid down to sleep, so long ago that even the Immense who lived inside it had forgotten it was alive.

It had slept for Ages.

Now it was awake, and Noah could see who had woken it!

Deep in the Legacy’s heart, where every river and Conduit met, Sir Moriarty coiled around the center of everything with every tentacle he had. Green poison bled from every seam of him. His spectacles were cracked. He was hurt badly, in ways an Immense One should be spared. And he had reached the heart anyway, and laid himself across it, and called the Legacy up out of its sleep.

The Legacy answered him!

Obsidian gold came down on the Thinker’s mountain!

It poured out of every Conduit in the Legacy at once, all of them turning their light toward the mountain, and it came down through the torn purple coat in a single crushing tide. And it fell only on those who were strangers here!

The Rusted Matriarch’s rust peeled off her in long brown sheets, her bronze body groaning under the weight. The Gilt Heir dropped to one knee, his gold dimming to brass, his face slack with shock. And the Hound of Thresholds was hurled backward out of the cavern entirely, out through the torn coat and into the blizzard, its doorway eyes wide.

THE Verdant Regard’s body cracked down its whole length like dry bark splitting in a frost, green light bleeding from the seam.

On Noah, it fell like warm rain!

The Legacy’s waking Immensity had looked at him and counted him among its own.

On Ling, it fell like a hand on her hair. On the Thinker, it fell and was welcomed, and the purple fire on his orbiting beads flared brighter.

The Fiend stayed exactly where he stood.

He stood in the middle of the obsidian gold tide as it crashed down on him. He studied the light pouring through the torn coat!

The pressure on him was enough to grind mountains, and yet he stood as this fucker’s immensity was unfathomable! How the hell had Noah escaped his grasp before when Poona threatened them just with the Legacy behind her?!

He had been cautious enough that the name of THE Legacy of THE Acharya made him hesitate then, but here he was among those leading in its invasion. What changed?

As he thought about this...

The thrones descended!

They came down through the torn coat one after another, out of the obsidian gold, and each took a place around the cavern without a word.

Sir Moriarty came first, in person. Well, in octupus.

The octopus-headed visage had drawn down into a body Noah had seen before: tentacles, spectacles, a long dark coat. But the coat was soaked through with green, the tentacles trailed poison in long glowing threads, and one lens of his spectacels was split clean across. He was breathng hard. His crimson eyes were steady.

THE Ashen Cantor came behind him, cinders drifting off his robe, his mouth closed for once. THE Keeper of the Unbroken Vow, the chain of oaths coiled over one shoulder. THE Lantern of the Last Shore, faceless, his lamp held low. THE Hollow Choir, their ring of hollow faces drifting into place along the cavern’s ceiling, silent.

They took their places around the five invaders.

And then, one by one, they turned and looked at Noah.

Thry had sensed or seen the power Noah had displayed to rebuff an Immense One and even not crumbled completely under THE SLEEPLESS FIEND as they had questions!

Their eyes shone!

Moriarty’s shone most of all. Behind his cracked spectacles, the crimson eyes held something new to Noah: hope... and it was enormous!

Noah understood what Moriarty thought he was seeing. They were looking at him and seeing an answer to the shut door. A key. Something beyond the winter’s grip. Every one of them was more certain of it than they had been an hour ago.

The Thinker spoke quietly, for Noah’s ears alone.

|"They see a key,"| he said, |"because they have spent a long looking for one. Long before this Winter. All of us are immense, but we remain. Ultimately, we have been waiting for things that will never arrive because we needed to save ourselves and find our own way...not find someone else to open the door for us."|

WAA!

His beads drifted slowly around him, burning.

|"As grand as you seem right, I still see a man who chose. It is the larger thing. And the rarer. The choice to choose...that is existence. All Civilizations chose. All ways choose. Existence is a series of...choices."|

Noah looked around the circle of thrones. Moriarty, the Cantor, the Keeper, the Lantern, the Choir.

He counted them again.

Where was Poona?

He always expected her to be with Moriarty!

Moriarty’s crimson eyes moved away from his, toward the torn coat and the blizzard beyond it.

In the middle of the cavern, THE Sleepless Fiend lifted one hand to his brow in a small, courtly salute. To the Thinker first. Then to Moriarty. And last of all, unhurried, to Noah.

The Fiend lowered his hand from his brow, and smiled at the circle of thrones as though they had all just shared a good meal.

"Well," he said. "Things did not go entirely according to plan, but I have learned a great deal that I can now report. It seems that what the great Lucy left behind...is not so untouchable as you all had everyone believe. I felt a sense of shame after this name alone made me not act not long ago, and I can be considered responsible for letting something slip past me."

HUUM!

He turned his face toward Moriarty. The obsidian gold was still pouring down on him, grinding, endless, and he stood in it with his robes perfectly still.

"I will come back when the snow is deeper, old friend. It will not be long now. And when I do, I think you will be more reasonable."

His countless eyes, behind his face, all seemed to settle on the split lens of Moriarty’s spectacles. "I left you something on one of your mountains. Where my daughter was broken. A small gift, for old times’ sake."

He paused.

"I hope you will remember the taste of the Verdant Regard’s tea every time you look at it."

Moriarty’s tentacles went perfectly still.

The Fiend withdrew.

He simply stepped backward through the torn purple coat, and the cavern’s stone and air and light, one by one, went back to being what they had been. The torches lost their crimson gold and burned purple again. The prayer mats faded to their old dull color. Even the snow that had turned to face him turned away and fell.

THE Verdant Regard went with him. Her cracked body bled green as she backed toward the gap, and her eyes stayed on the Thinker to the very last, wet and furious and full of a grief that had nowhere left to go as she blamed him for the fact that they weren’t able to get Noah.

She also gazed hatefully at Noah as she sent him a message...

|"Why the fuck do you portray Immensity now? You were simply playing along this whole time? This power could have entirely crushed my daughter- why push her to form Immensity for her to simply be severed?! Why?!"|

...!

Noah’s eyes remained cold as he didn’t even spare this woman a reply.

How the fuck was he to blame?

He ignored her as she disappeared!

The Rusted Matriarch followed, rust trailing from her. The Gilt Heir dragged himself up off his knee, glared once at Ling, and went. Out in the blizard, the Hound of Thresholds was already loping away across the Legacy, grey and fast, without looking back.

Then they were gone alongside all Immense Ones who had invaded as if they all had received a collective order to withdraw!

The Legacy breathed out!

Noah felt it everywhere at once through his gold eyes. The walled domains came down. The Existential Conduits that had risen into pillars sank slowly back into their rivers, light dimming to its usual purple-gold.

Moriarty’s obsidian-gold mist lifted from the mountains in long drifting curtains, and the golden spheres of foreign Immensity that had been frozen inside those walls truly tore loose all at once and fled. Dozens of them, streaking up through the cracked sky and out of the Legacy like sparks leaving a fire!

The cracks in the sky remained!

Snow fell through them, heavier than before.

|The incursion into THE Legacy of THE Acharya of Immensity has ended.|

|Immense grasps rebuffed: 2.|

|Immense residue devoured: 4.|

|Sap risen toward the First Bough: 29%.|

|Judgment Debt: 2.|

...!

Twenty-nine percent!

The Hound’s residue, the Immense grasps turned aside, the Fiend’s own finger held off at the edge of his dream: the Tree had drunk all of it and grown. He had come out of a cavern full of Immense Ones stronger than he went in!

And beside him, the Thinker was looking at the cracks in the sky with his weeping eyes open.

|"I truly dislike the Fiend. He leaves gifts,"| the Thinker said quietly, |"as other beings leave footprints. Wherever he has walked, something is left behind for someone to find."|

His beads hung still. |"It is never kind."|

Ling looked from her father to Noah and back, her white eyes narrowing. She asked what gift. The Thinker gave her no answer.

He was looking at Moriarty.

The old scholar had stood frozen since the Fiend spoke. He stood among the other thrones with his tentacles hanging limp, green poison dripping slowly from them onto the stone, and his crimson eyes fixed on the place in the coat where the Fiend had gone.

Footsteps came up the mountain path outside!

Quick, uneven, a little too fast for an old man’s knees. Verys came in through the cavern mouth with snow on his shoulders and his face grey. He bowed to the Thinker. He bowed to the thrones. Then he came straight to Noah, and Noah saw his hands were shakng.

The Keepers’ network had carried it, Verys told him.

Every servant in the Legacy had it now, passed mountain to mountain through the Conduits while the war was still going. What had happened in Moriarty’s study.

When the Fiend had opened the Verdant Regard’s dome, when the poison had come blooming out of Moriarty and the two of them had moved to finish him, Poona had stepped between them.

She had already taken her true form. The vast slime of every color, filling half the study, her one great eye open. She had put herself between Moriarty and the two oldest enemies in the room, and she had burned her own Immensity to hold them. All of it. Every Age of it.

She had poured it out into a wall of living color that neither the Fiend nor the Verdant Regard could get through, and she had held that wall while Moriarty fought the poison off and dragged himself down into the heart of the Legacy to wake it.

She had held it for exactly as long as it took.

Beside Noah, Ling had gone white. Her hands came up over her mouth, and her white eyes went to her father. The Thinker’s beads hung motionless in the air around him, every one of them dark, their purple fire banked low for the first time since the Fiend had walked into the cavern.

Verys stopped there. The rest needed no saying.

Across the cavern, Moriarty reached up with one trembling tentacle and took off his cracked spectacles.

Noah stood.

The Tree in his chest had gone very quiet. The Human in him roared!

"Where is she?" he asked.

Verys looked at him as he answered in a low voice.

"The Fiend moved her corpse to The Firmament, Sir," he said. "On the Plain of Accord."
