Since what Jack was about to do, and what he intended to lead everyone through, was clearly a serious matter, it didn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Bluebird was present among the gathered group. His appearance alone added weight to the moment, especially because of the rumours that had been quietly circulating throughout the community.People had heard snippets of information, how Jack had recently been asked to help Bluebird with a difficult mission, how knights had been dispatched the other day, and how something significant had happened. Now, seeing Jack gather the entire pack and openly announce that they were marching against Steve and the other pack, many naturally connected the dots.
If both events were related, and to everyone listening, that seemed like an obvious conclusion, then whatever had happened on Bluebird’s mission had somehow involved Steve’s Werewolf pack. And the result of that involvement was the situation they found themselves facing now.
“I was a bit worried that with just this many people, we might not be able to best the other pack,” one Werewolf whispered under his breath to a friend, “but if we have Bluebird on our side... that shouldn’t be a problem, right?”
“Right. But doesn’t it look like he knows those three new guys? That’s strange, huh?” another replied.
“Maybe he was the one who brought them in. Or maybe he met them during some expedition. They said they were from a faraway village, right?”
While the three were initially relieved to see Bluebird there, familiarity in a chaotic moment, another worry quickly settled in. Between the two packs, they already believed Jack’s pack outmatched Steve’s. With Bluebird supporting them on top of that, they couldn’t imagine the other side standing a chance. There was only one small comfort: Bluebird didn’t look like someone who intended to kill Steve.
Signalling the three, he gestured for them to move away from the group, increasing the suspicion of the other Werewolves even more. But Bluebird did it only because he knew how sharp Werewolf hearing was. Ordinary citizens forgot this fact all the time, speaking ill of Werewolves within earshot without noticing, but Bluebird had been with them long enough to understand how careful he needed to be.
“The three of you,” Bluebird began quietly once they were out of range, “did you manage to find out what has been weighing on Jack? I have a feeling that whatever is troubling him is tied to his decision to do all of this. I just... can’t seem to piece it together.”
Gary and Lupus both looked directly at Kai. Neither wanted to risk saying something that would earn Kai’s irritation later, and Kai tended to handle explanations better.
“We found a few things,” Kai replied carefully. “Some of it is related to his family... very personal matters, actually. That’s why he’s been so out of it. But we didn’t find the root cause of everything.”
It showed they were investigating and that they understood the sensitivity of the matter, while at the same time giving Bluebird just enough information to form his own incomplete theories. After a long moment, Bluebird exhaled slowly as if he had reached a private conclusion.
“The last thing I want to see is a massacre between two packs,” Bluebird said. “Especially when there doesn’t need to be one.”
Then his eyes sharpened slightly as he looked at the three outsiders.
“I have a favour to ask. Since I’m the one who helped get you three into Jack’s pack, I think you don’t really have a reason to refuse.”
He clapped his hands together lightly before any of them could speak.
“Great! I thought so. I believe the four of us are in the same camp, we do not want this confrontation to become something bloody and irreversible. So I want one of you to head to Steve’s camp and deliver a message. These exact words...”
As Bluebird explained the nature of the message, all three of them widened their eyes.
“There’s something like that?” Gary blurted out before he could stop himself.
“Of course,” Bluebird replied with a soft chuckle. “Every knight knows this rule, and Jack is a knight before anything else. He will comply as well. Now then, out of the three of you, who is the fastest? And more importantly, who wouldn’t catch Jack’s attention too much if they suddenly left?”
Lupus had recently met with Jack directly and, given his size, strength, and age, he definitely stood out. Gary, well, even in this era, his green hair made him noticeable. He had already been forced to explain several times that it was simply the hair he was born with.
Naturally, both of them slowly turned their heads toward Kai.
And Kai, unfortunately, was the fastest among them.
“It looks like that’s decided,” Bluebird said cheerfully. “Before Jack arrives, take off and head straight for Steve’s camp.”
Kai opened his mouth to protest, but Bluebird had already assumed he would do it. With no room left to object, Kai stepped away and broke into a run, heading across the open fields and toward the deep forest where Steve’s pack resided.
As he ran, an exhausted, irritated groan left his mouth.
“What the heck! Why am I the one doing this? Doesn’t this count as interfering? If I deliver this message, doesn’t that mean I’m directly changing events!?”
He continued grumbling as he ran.
“Wait... wait, think rationally. Bluebird would have sent someone anyway. He was clearly concerned about Jack losing control. If that’s the case, then I should run. But maybe... a little slower. Like a regular human.”
He slowed his pace.
“But hold on, if Bluebird hadn’t met us, wouldn’t he have sent a fast knight who knew Qi to deliver the message? In that case... I should run faster. But how fast?”
Behind him, both Lupus and Gary were quietly shaking from laughter, imagining the chaos unfolding inside Kai’s overthinking mind.
And finally, moments later, Jack himself arrived.
