When Jack arrived, he thanked everyone who had come to help, and this time he himself looked a little different. Strapped across his back were two massive weapons, both unmistakable even at a glance. One was the large warhammer, heavy and imposing, while the other was his great sword, resting diagonally across his shoulders. The presence of both weapons alone sent a quiet ripple through the group. It was rare to see Jack fully equipped like this, and it made the gravity of what was about to happen settle in.After offering his thanks, Jack wasted no time lingering. The group began to move, though not nearly as quickly as many of them had expected. There was no immediate transformation, no sudden rush forward toward Steve’s camp. Instead, they marched together as one, traveling across the wide plains before eventually entering the forest that lay ahead.
Gary found this strange. He had assumed Jack would order them to transform and sprint straight toward the camp, closing the distance as quickly as possible. Instead, their pace was steady and controlled. It wasn’t because Bluebird wouldn’t have been able to keep up either. Gary knew well enough that Bluebird could channel Qi into his steps, moving faster than most beasts if he wanted to. So the slower advance had to be intentional.
“Man, that warhammer really is the same one,” Gary said quietly as he glanced at Jack’s back. “I honestly can’t see Steve winning this fight if they were to go all out against each other, especially with a weapon like that.”
“It is impressive, and you’re right,” Bluebird replied, walking alongside Gary and Lupus near the back of the pack. “That warhammer was crafted using materials from a Demon-tier beast. Jack didn’t defeat it easily either. He and the pack were pushed to their limits during that fight.”
Bluebird’s eyes narrowed slightly as memories surfaced. “Werewolves are strong by nature, but it seems that when they’re placed in true danger, at least in Jack’s case, they can draw out an immense amount of power far beyond what they normally show.”
Lupus carried a shield as he walked, its surface worn but sturdy, while Gary held his own warhammer. Gary’s weapon, however, was clearly of a lower tier. It lacked any special presence or unusual effects, serving purely as a solid tool rather than something extraordinary.
“Why are we walking instead of heading directly to the camp?” Lupus asked. “Is it to conserve energy?”
“I don’t think that’s the reason,” Bluebird replied after a brief pause. “Before we left, Jack requested that his wife and other members of his family be protected in the castle if they returned. Everyone agreed without hesitation. But after hearing from you that this situation involves his family... I think Jack is using this time to think.”
Bluebird glanced ahead toward Jack’s broad back. “It feels like he’s mulling things over as we move, rather than rushing forward blindly.”
The group continued on, the forest gradually thickening around them. Gary and Lupus could tell they were getting close. From their previous visits to Steve’s camp, they estimated they were about an hour away now.
That was when a fourth figure appeared from behind them.
“I was a little worried Jack would notice something,” Kai said as he fell into step beside them. “But his mind seems so preoccupied that he’s not even paying attention to how many werewolves were present at the start.”
“You were slower than I expected,” Gary replied, giving him a sideways look. “I was starting to get a little worried. Did you pass on the message?”
“Yeah, I did,” Kai answered. “But honestly, I think it was a waste of time. It looked like Steve already knew this was going to happen. He and his pack were clearly preparing. From what I could tell, they’d already decided to do exactly what you warned them about.”
Bluebird raised an eyebrow at that. He was surprised, but not entirely displeased. Still, it left him wondering. If Steve and his pack were already prepared, then what had tipped them off? Why were they so certain this confrontation was coming? Was there already direct involvement behind the scenes?
The answer didn’t come. Instead, Jack lifted his hand, signaling for everyone to stop.
In an instant, the atmosphere changed.
At Jack’s signal, the werewolves began to transform. Bones shifted, muscles expanded, and claws extended as their bodies adapted to battle. No longer were they simply marching through the forest. Now they were running, charging forward with powerful strides that tore through the undergrowth.
The werewolves moved with ferocity, weaving through the trees with practiced ease. Bluebird kept pace surprisingly well, his Qi-enhanced steps allowing him to remain alongside them without falling behind. To an untrained eye, their movement might have looked chaotic, but Kai could see the structure forming beneath it.
They don’t even realize it, Kai thought. They’ve naturally formed roles based on their weapons and positioning. This isn’t like Steve’s pack at all. This is organized, like an army.
The thought stuck with him. There was something he could take from this, something useful to bring back to the Howlers gang if he ever returned.
As they surged forward, the forest began to thin. Smoke drifted into view above the treeline, faint but unmistakable. Beyond it, the massive mountain loomed, its presence dominating the landscape.
Jack leapt ahead and landed firmly, his feet striking the ground with enough force to crack the earth beneath him. The others followed suit, skidding to a halt behind him.
They had arrived.
Across from them stood Steve and the rest of his pack. They were already transformed, weapons in hand, bodies tense and prepared. Their numbers exceeded a hundred, far more than Jack’s group, and they stood ready, eyes locked forward.
If there was anything that evened the battlefield, it was this moment.
Steve stepped forward, his eyes glowing red.
Jack did the same.
