The rhythmic thumping of the rotor blades had caught everyone’s undivided attention, and when they looked up, they could see a heavy transport helicopter hovering directly over the petrol station. Through the open side door, a massive silhouette was visible. Standing on the very edge of the bay, his large body framed against the sky, was Lupus.“Freaking hell, that looks kinda cool, I have to admit,” Innu said, shielding his eyes from the downdraft.
As the helicopter descended further, the details of Lupus’s appearance became clear. Although he wasn't transformed into his towering werewolf state, he was still wearing his full suit of black armor. When he had recovered even a fraction of his energy after the battle with Unzoku, he had immediately poured it into the core of the armor, which in turn provided him with the artificial strength needed to keep working through his exhaustion.
The helicopter finally touched down, its skids settling onto the cracked asphalt. As the blades began to slow, four members of the old Lupus pack, loyalists who had survived the fall of the castle, jumped out and began unloading heavy crates from the cargo bay with practiced speed.
“I was worried that I was going to miss you guys. I know the situation is urgent,” Lupus said, his voice sounding raspier than usual. He attempted to take a confident step forward, but his leg suddenly gave in, and he nearly stumbled to the ground. Before he could fall, Slit appeared right by his side, catching his shoulder and steadying him.
“That’s a first for you, boss. What happened?” Slit asked, his voice filled with concern.
“I’m just... tired,” Lupus answered, leaning slightly on his comrade. “I used everything I could when I fought against Unzoku. He’s a tough one, hard to kill, I’ll say that much. And knowing that, I thought that the two of you would need every advantage possible to take him down. So, I wanted to create something for you.”
The crates that had been brought along were pried open, and taking a peak inside, Gary and the others could see the contents shimmering in the sunlight. It was an armor set, two of them, in fact, that looked almost identical in design to the one Lupus was wearing.
The plates were crafted with black, hard, jagged lines that looked as if they were made of obsidian, but they were finished with a brilliant trim of gold. The colors perfectly matched the signature palette of the Howlers. It was unbelievable craftsmanship, and Gary felt a surge of excitement. He wanted to put it on right away; in fact, he was already reaching into the box to pull the chest piece out.
“I had gone straight from fighting to working on those items for you,” Lupus explained, watching Gary inspect the gear. “Honestly, I’m surprised how weak I am. I thought werewolves could stay awake forever as long as they kept eating, but pouring my Qi into the forging of those pieces really took it out of me.
“I had actually started the process of creating everything for all of you along with my own set a long time ago. I got to do as much of the initial forging as I could, but eventually, I needed to focus my full attention on finishing my own set for the castle defense. I had finished my items first, including my shield.” Lupus gestured to the helicopter where another member was bringing out his familiar, reinforced shield. “It was a good thing I did, because I’m not sure I would have been able to survive what I did without it. Thankfully, having already built the templates for my own armor, it was much quicker to just finish off the two of yours. I know it will come in handy.”
Luzen and the others watched as Lupus kicked one of the smaller crates open. Inside, Gary could see a pair of dual swords. One of them had a pure white hilt and a simple, clean metallic blade that lacked any pattern, reflecting the light like a mirror. The other sword was its polar opposite; its hilt was a deep, oceanic blue, and the edge of the blade was jagged, resembling rows of razor-sharp teeth.
“I might have pushed myself too hard, but I knew I needed to give you those weapons,” Lupus said. He then clenched his shaking hand into a fist, his expression turning grim. “Because I hate to do this to the both of you, but I won’t be able to take part in this physical fight.
“While I was fighting earlier, something happened. Unzoku couldn’t use his energy against me, and I turned into something I’ve never turned into before... but ever since that moment, I haven't been able to transform. And having used every last bit of energy in my current form to finish these items, it’s up to the two of you now.”
Gary nodded, a sense of heavy responsibility settling on him as he finished fastening the last piece of the black-and-gold armor onto his right arm. The armor was clearly enchanted or specially forged, as it seemed to shrink and form-fit to his body perfectly the moment it touched his skin.
“You should rest up, Lupus,” Gary said, his voice echoing slightly behind the new collar of the armor. “I’ll make sure to deal with him.”
Lupus shook his head stubbornly. “No. I might not be able to fight, but I’m definitely coming with you. I don’t care about the risk, I want to see every part of this. I’m going to watch until the very end as you beat him.”
With the reinforcements from Slough standing ready and the new equipment from Lupus equipped, the allied force was finally complete. They turned their gaze, where the rusted peaks of Tower Land loomed in the distance. The final hunt was about to begin.
