When Gary looked at Kai by his side, he felt a brief, sharp pang of jealousy. It was hard not to feel a certain envy toward those weapons; items that would transform at will to perfectly match Kai's specialized form? It was a feat of engineering and magic that felt almost unfair. Not only that, but the very armor Lupus had painstakingly crafted also seemed to possess a fluid quality, shifting its plates and joints to adapt in shape and size as Kai dropped into his powerful, all-fours Wolf state.
But Gary knew he didn't have the luxury of time to dwell on jealousy. They had a singular, monumental job to do, and an ancient enemy stood directly in front of them, radiating a malice that threatened to swallow the entire park.
[Ember Dash has been activated]
Gary charged ahead first, his movements a blur of orange and black as he leaped from side to side. The combined power of Shadow Ash flames and concentrated Qi in his feet acted like a propellant, kicking him off the concrete at incredible speeds. To match that explosive momentum, Kai was doing the exact same thing on the opposite flank. He moved like a silver ghost, jumping in synchronization with Gary, leaving the ground flash-frozen where his paws struck the pavement.
When they both drew within striking distance, Gary initiated the opening gambit. He swung his warhammer in a massive lateral arc, but the blow was intercepted and blocked by Unzoku’s outstretched hand.
However, Gary’s strike was only half of the equation. When Unzoku tried to shift his weight to block Kai’s incoming hit, the silver wolf accelerated, his timing perfect. Kai lunged and sliced through a section of Unzoku’s ribs with the razor-sharp horn that now adorned his head.
A deep, jagged cut opened up along the progenitor's side, the edges immediately frosting over as Kai’s elemental power took hold. Right after the impact, Kai leaped again, skimming his metal-masked teeth over Unzoku’s arm, drawing more dark blood. He could feel it through the connection to his weapons, his elemental powers and physical capabilities were undeniably amplified by the gear Lupus had provided.
“You think these little scratches are going to hurt me!” Unzoku claimed, his voice a guttural snarl of defiance. As he spoke, the frozen patches on his skin began to crack and fade, the red mist surging to knit the wound on his ribs back together. He ignored Kai for the moment, turning his full fury toward Gary.
Both Gary and Kai knew the reality of the situation. The way they were attacking right now, even with Kai’s constant, surgical strikes, wasn't enough. These small wounds wouldn't add up to a severe enough injury to stop a creature of this caliber; this wasn't a normal opponent they were going up against. Whatever Kai had planned for the endgame, Unzoku needed to be significantly more compromised than this. That was why Gary needed to become the ultimate distraction.
Knowing his role, Gary swung the hammer with a single, powerful hand. Predictably, the attack was blocked by Unzoku, just like the ones before it. But this time, Gary used the momentum of the blocked strike to spin his entire body. He rotated with the force of a cyclone and slammed his fist hard, right into Unzoku’s face.
The impact exploded with the combined power of his Lycan strength and Qi. However, because Gary was now in such close quarters and had committed to two strikes in rapid succession, he had left himself open. Unzoku was not slow; he reacted instantly, slamming his knee upward directly into Gary’s stomach.
A spray of blood erupted from Gary’s mouth. His armor held together, preventing him from being disemboweled, but the sheer kinetic force rippled through his internal organs. He dropped the hammer, the weapon clattering to the ground, but rather than being launched into the air by the force of the knee, Gary reached out and grabbed onto Unzoku’s massive shoulders, pinning himself to the monster.
[Volcanic Burst has been activated]
Gary triggered his skill, and his entire body erupted in a violent pillar of Shadow Ash flames. The sudden heat and pressure pushed Unzoku’s frame downward, and Gary took the opportunity to slam his head directly into his opponent's forehead with a sickening thud.
Unzoku delivered two giant, bone-breaking blows to Gary’s stomach in retaliation, but Gary held his ground. He refused to let go, continuing to fight toe-to-toe, taking hit for hit in a brutal exchange of attrition. The strikes were landing cleanly on Gary; even his resilient Werewolf body was beginning to swell and bruise, and several of his teeth had already shattered under Unzoku’s fists. Still, Gary pushed forward.
“You fool! Have you already used up everything you have? Are you now just desperately trying to kill yourself?” Unzoku shouted. He caught Gary with a devastating uppercut that snapped his head back, then jumped and slammed a condensed fist into his chest, pinning him momentarily to the broken earth.
Through the red haze of pain, Unzoku could see the silver wolf, Kai, running around them in wide circles, seemingly refusing to come in for an attack. But before he could capitalize on Gary’s grounded state, the Shadow Ash wolf had already sprung back up, his eyes burning with an unnatural light as he activated his skills once again.
“You know I can heal! You're just wasting all of your power, this is useless!” Unzoku roared.
As Gary’s body skidded across the ground from the last blow, he ignored the pain and charged in a third time, summoning the hammer back to his hands and swinging it with a desperate, wild fury.
‘No, it’s not!’ Gary screamed in his head, his vision blurring.
There was one more thing Gary had in his repertoire. Long before the transformations, long before the mythical forms he had been granted, there was a core part of his system that had saved his life time and time again. It was time to bet everything on it.
[Last Stand has been activated]
Gary was now using every skill he had without any concern for his remaining energy reserves. He was swinging the hammer without a thought for the defenses he was leaving open or the staggering amount of damage Unzoku was landing on his body. He knew he should have died by now, the system was red-lining, but he kept pushing. He kept moving because he trusted in one thing above all else: he trusted in Kai.
“Gary!” Kai shouted.
The silver wolf had finally broken his circular pattern, sprinting forward with full force and transforming to his Werewolf state. He held one sword in his hand, and in his other, he gripped the medallion. He was aiming straight for Unzoku’s front, a suicide charge.
“What are you planning!” Unzoku screamed, turning his body around to meet Kai’s charge. But as he did, Gary triggered a skill he rarely used, but one that was the perfect combination with his current state.
[Magnetic Howl!]
From Gary’s throat, an immense, vibrating howl erupted, a sonic wave of pure provocation directed entirely at Unzoku. In a normal situation, a skill like Magnetic Howl wouldn't typically work on Unzoku’s.
But the medallion was in play. The proximity of the ancient artifact weakened Unzoku’s mental defenses just enough. It only needed to work for a fraction of a second.
Unzoku’s arm, which had been aimed at Kai, was pulled toward Gary as his instincts were momentarily hijacked. He fought against the compulsion, leaving him physically stuck in a moment of hesitation.
Kai capitalized on the velocity of his sprint. He pierced Unzoku through the chest with his sword, the blade sinking deep into the progenitor’s heart. With his other hand free, he slammed the medallion directly into Unzoku’s chest and unleashed every bit of his elemental power, flash-freezing the wound from the inside out.
“DIE, UNZOKU!” Kai shouted, the sound echoing through the ruins of Tower Land.
