Chapter 209 Mother's fate

This chapter is updated by JustRead.pl

209: Mother’s fate 209: Mother’s fate The scene in front of him was clearly the entrance into the Watt’s estate, the appearance was almost identical to how it was when he visited during the tea party.

The main difference was the time of day, it seemed to be almost dusk, and the streetlights looked to have only just started turning on.

Arthur noticed movement down the street, a group of shadowy figures had started scaling the fence, and it seemed as though they had done so in a blindspot, as the security guard on duty failed to notice them.

Arthur, in his strangely ethereal form, began floating in the direction of the figures, his body passing effortlessly through the fence as he quickly closed the distance between him and the trespassers.

One of the figures seemed to have cut themselves on the fence, as they plummetted to the ground and started holding their leg as if it were in pain.

Moments later another figure seemed to have forced the wounded man to stand and travel with them, the wounded figure hobbled along behind them as they entered what was essentially a forest.

Arthur’s body had not only caught up with the figures, he passed right through them and continued travelling in the direction they were heading in, but his body stopped as yet another figure appeared within a shaded glade.

He could feel his heart beating faster as details of the figure came into view, there were actually two figures, although the second was just too small to notice at first.

“She really does look like Olivia…” Arthur muttered.

Arthur stared as he saw his mother holding a much younger version of himself, he looked to be around four years old, roughly.

“Now this is called a Turkey Tail, it’s a mushroom that can help people from getting sick,” Arthur’s mother explained, “But it can also do some very bad things as well.” It was clear to see that baby Arthur was not paying attention to his mother’s lesson, but he did seem to be having fun hearing her voice.

“Plants and mushrooms can do amazing things, but they all have their downsides as well, you need to be very careful of what you eat, and how much of it you eat,” She continued speaking to the young Arthur as they walked through the forest.

“Some plants can be very dangerous, sometimes the good effects they provide are not worth the damage they will cause.” It was clear to see that Arthur’s mother was very passionate about plants, and especially the medical benefits they could bring.

“Ahh, so that’s where I got it from,” Arthur muttered to himself jokingly, “I wasn’t aware that having a green thumb was hereditary.” “Oh dear, we should probably start heading back, it has gotten rather dark.” Arthur’s mother muttered, “I still need to go drag your father out of the laboratory or else he’ll forget about dinner again.” “Mama down.” the young Arthur demanded while pointing to the floor.

“Okay sweetie, but don’t run off, we need to go home now.” She said while lowering Arthur to the ground, “Here, hold mommy’s hand so you don’t trip.” Heavy footsteps in the forest caused Arthur’s mother to turn around, where she saw several figures sprinting in her direction.

“Donovan, is that you?” She yelled into the forest, but a surprised expression was plastered on her face when the shadowy figures finally came into view.

Before the rest of the story unfolded, Arthur found himself being forced out of the vision.

He attempted to resist it, but he was helpless as the scenery around him faded to black.

Arthur didn’t even have a moment within the darkness before his body suddenly jerked awake.

“W-What the fuck,” He muttered to himself as he lay there on his bed.

He knew what was going to happen, this was likely the day his mother had died, no rather, the day she was murdered, as Donovan had recently told him.

He felt frustrated that he couldn’t understand the full story.

Still, remembering back to what Donovan told him on the day of the tea party, the criminals must have incorrectly assumed that she was Olivia, Maria’s mother, as they attempted to kill her only a few weeks later.

The man who injured himself on the fence was only a common criminal according to the police, and that same criminal was found murdered a week later.

Clearly, the leader was tying up loose ends, and the large sum of money they were receiving came from an unknown source.

“Who did it?” Arthur asked himself out loud, his throat tightening with anger.

“Who tried to kill Olivia, why did my mother have to die?” Arthur’s anger turned into focus, he closed his eyes and recalled images of the figures in the darkness, and images of the estate, but no matter how much he focused, he failed to bring forth any visions.

“Why are you not working!” Arthur shouted while throwing a pillow halfway across the room, “If I can’t do it myself, I’ll need a catalyst.” Leaping from his bed, Arthur ran out of the room and burst through the door into his room of potted plants.

“One of you must be useful, surely.” He muttered out loud while looking through the various plants he had growing on various shelves, “Datura stramonium…

Hallucinogenic properties might work…

But no, this one is too dangerous.” “Dendrocnide moroides, useless…” He muttered as he carefully moved the potted plant aside, making sure not to touch the nettle contained within, and then he spotted a pot behind it labelled ‘Mandragora officinarum’, which he immediately reached for to look within, “Aha, mandrake…

that could work, but it could be risky.” Before he could pull the pot plant off the shelf, he spotted another pot plant, featuring a bundle of almost spherical cactus.

“Wait a second, when did I get one of you?” Arthur muttered while picking the pot up, “You’re certainly not legal to own…

Well, the same goes for about half of this collection…” “Peyote cactus, another hallucinogenic plant…

It’ll probably be a safer option than the mandrake.” Arthur muttered, “It will likely cause some of the symptoms I experience during visions too, especially the nausea…

At least I likely won’t accidentally poison myself with a high concentration of alkaloids.” Arthur placed the pot plant on a desk and tried to remember how exactly the peyote was consumed to cause the hallucinogenic effects.

But before he bothered pulling out his phone to research the internet, he remembered his mother’s words.

“…Some plants can be very dangerous, sometimes the good effects they provide are not worth the damage they will cause.” He muttered to himself, “What am I doing…

I’m not going to solve this by taking drugs.” He placed the Peyote cactus back on his shelf, making sure to hide it behind another pot before leaving the room.

Taking a few deep breaths, he thought back to what caused the visions to return and then remembered the engineer who almost ran into him.

“It was, sort of like an electric shock when we came in contact…

And then he seemed fine after it.” Arthur muttered, “The feeling of energy running up my arm, did I absorb the energy causing his issues, if so, how…

and why am I not currently freezing like he was?” Arthur pulled out his phone, noticing that barely two hours had passed since his visions began.

“I believe I remember Doctor Hudson mentioning a second patient, let’s do some science…” Arthur muttered to himself as he ran into his room and threw on the clothes he was wearing prior.

Arthur left his house once more, heading straight for the laboratory’s medical ward.

People within the building didn’t seem to care that Arthur was walking around the medical ward, or that he was searching for a specific patient’s room.

The only people who would question his actions at this moment would be Doctor Hudson, Anna or his father, but none of them had appeared.

Arthur realised he was in the correct room when opening the door sent a gust of almost freezing cold air past him, causing goosebumps to rise on his arms.

As he stepped into the room and closed the door behind him, Arthur noticed various methods had been used to cool down the room.

The room’s air conditioning had been cranked up to the coldest setting it had, and there were plenty of fans within the room providing airflow.

Moving closer, Arthur could see that coolant packs were placed all over the patient’s body and a damp towel had been draped over his forehead and eyes.

There were canisters of liquid nitrogen in the corner of the room, but it seemed as though it hadn’t been used yet, that was likely an extreme step that hadn’t been approved of yet.

Arthur walked up to the patient, who appeared to be suffering from severe heatstroke.

The air around the patient continued to warm up the closer Arthur got, as though the man’s body was radiating heat, enough heat to counteract the additional methods of cooling.

“This is…

impossible.” Arthur muttered, “For the air around him to feel this warm, even from this distance, his body would have to be well above the temperatures that would kill him…” Looking at the readings from the various machines surrounding the patient, it was clear that the patient’s organs were not failing him, as they theoretically should be.

“I suppose if I can see the future, we’ve gone well beyond the reasonable expectations of science…” Arthur muttered, reaching out to touch the patient’s arm.

A burning sensation ran up Arthur’s arm as his hand got closer, and he could see his fingers start to turn pink, as though he held his hand under scalding hot water.

Arthur ignored the mild pain at first, but as he placed his hand on the man’s arm, he couldn’t help but wince at the sharp burning pain hitting the palm of his hand.

The second sensation he felt was almost like a jolt of electricity running up his arm, and once that sensation ended, Arthur quickly pulled his hand away.

He quickly reached for a coolant pack nearby to soothe his hand.

The man laying on the bed seemed to be waking up now, so Arthur quickly made his way towards the door.

“D-doc, could y-you turn on the heat?” The man muttered, his teeth chattering.

“I-it’s so c-cold.” Arthur turned off the air conditioner before leaving the room, fortunately, there was still a towel over the man’s eyes, so he hadn’t seen who it was.

‘I sure hope that was enough energy to trigger it…

Well, his symptoms seemed more severe than the other guy, so maybe that translates into more of this energy?’ Arthur thought to himself.

REFLEXIONES DE LOS CREADORES TechnexGames Hello everyone.

I hope you’ve all had a great new years and that 2024 has been treating you well.

I’ll be honest with you all, It has been very hard picking up this story again lately.

Every time I try to do so, it keeps getting pushed back, and now here we are 4 months since the last chapter.

I’m genuinely sorry to everybody who has been following the story for a while, these wait times must be incredibly frustrating to deal with.

I’m not able to promise anything, but I’d very much like to post more than 5 chapters this year.

I’d also like to give a special shoutout to dmacrulz, who as far as I can tell, has effectively been voting on this story almost every day, even without any updates for months.
