211: Timeskip – The Broken man 211: Timeskip – The Broken man The engineer who remained in a coma this whole time, Mallory Keres.
She was briefly mentioned by Anna at dinner a little while ago, before being silenced by her father not wanting it brought up at the kitchen table.
One who should, theoretically, be a big juicy battery of otherworldly energy for Arthur to claim and use.
“And if it wakes her up in the process, then we both win…” He muttered under his breath.
‘But, what if I absorb so much power that I become the coma patient instead?…’ A thought ran through his mind, before his exhaustion overtook him.
In the morning, Arthur didn’t wake up.
He found himself in a daze, feeling almost lethargic, as though he hadn’t slept at all.
But he could clearly see that it was early in the afternoon rather than the morning.
Arthur didn’t bother with his morning routine that day, even the mere idea of watering his plants felt like a chore.
He barely had the will to get himself cleaned up, however, after figuring it probably wasn’t a good idea to head to the beta testing facility smelling like sweat, his sense of shame and desire to retain some level of dignity won over his indolent mood this time.
‘So using this power on the shorter side causes nausea, and if I use too much it causes lethargy…’ He thought to himself, ‘Perhaps using too much of this really will be harmful to my body.’ He had begun rationalising the drawbacks of his power, however the desire to find out the truth about his mother’s murder was a worthy goal and worth the risk in Arthur’s mind.
After a quick shower and a change of clothing, Arthur decided against visiting the laboratory right away.
While he was still on the fence about risking his life to absorb Mallory’s otherworldly energy, he decided he shouldn’t do so before dealing with the beta test today, at the very least.
Instead he decided that he would potentially make an attempt to absorb her power later that night.
As usual to his schedule, Donovan had arrived at the house to pick Arthur up.
However, his facial expression showed equal levels of suspicion and childish awe as Arthur entered the car.
Arthur noticed an army of tiny ducks had been stuck to the top of the dashboard on the passengers side with an adhesive putty, likely what he had on hand from his office supplies.
“How did you do it?” Donovan asked, and then continued with a slight hint of frustration in his voice, “and how many are there?
I keep finding more.” “What are you talking about?” Arthur asked with a cheeky grin, to which he immediately copped a rubber duck to the forehead.
Donovan shook his head and started the car as Arthur plugged in his seatbelt, “This is probably your best prank so far…
Mark my words, I’ll get you back for this.” As Donovan reached up and lowered his sun visor, a small duck dropped into his lap, which caused him to let out a small chuckle before it was added alongside the army of tiny ducks on his dashboard.
The remainder of the day progressed as normal, Arthur logged into the game and made his way to Megalopolis to turn in his wizard quests, the remainder of his group scattered and began doing their own things.
Maria travelled to Orchomenus to meet up with Holly, while Mason began training his blacksmithing and mining souls.
The rest of the group focused on quests around Macedonia and Megalopolis, planning to explore some of the other settlements on the eastern side of the wall, like Asea or Caphyae.
Several weeks had passed after this day, Arthur mostly focused on wizarding quests during this time as he believed the thieves guild would send word once they had more leads for him to follow or a target for him to kill, and he didn’t want to go past the wall into the frontier just in case something did come in.
Arthur paid several visits to the laboratory’s medical wing, but he found that the two engineers he had absorbed energy from previously were taking a while to build up enough energy for him to use.
This made him consider visiting Mallory several times, but every time he got close to her room, a strange discomfort washed over him and prevented him from moving further.
Due to the low energy Arthur wasn’t making much progress with the identification of his mother’s killers, however he did eventually watch her death unfold, the first time almost broke him, but as he witnessed the same event several times per week, he found himself growing somewhat numb to the pain.
Others began to notice the change, how he seemed eratic or undergoing a severe level of stress.
He was less sociable, lacked an appetite, dark circles formed under his eyes and he found himself falling ill more and more as his desperation slowly drove him to the brink.
It was time.
He needed answers and he couldn’t afford to wait until the two engineers he was familiar with stored up enough energy to use them again.
Doctor Hudson was already aware that he was somehow involved in the patients suddenly being cured of their ailments, but if he knew the extent of Arthur’s powers, Doctor Hudson likely wouldn’t let him anywhere near Mallory, let alone the other two, and his father would certainly hear of it.
And yet even with the stresses of his life, Arthur’s adventures continued within the world of New Genesis.
He had finally recieved contact from the thieves guild, and through several missions they had finally found the drug dealer causing them so many issues.
But it seemed as though picking off the spider’s legs wasn’t going to be so easy anymore, as they had finally decided to not go down without a fight.
Within the streets of Megalopolis, explosions rang out.
Two robed figures were engaged in a chase along the rooftops of the noble houses.
The one being chased down seemed to be effortlessly keeping their distance, it was as if their shoes never quite touched the tiles as they dashed along the surface.
Merlin, however, shattered several tiles as he stomped along the surface.
Graceful was not a word that could be used for him at this moment, he seemed almost blinded by rage, not sparing a second thought for the karma deductions he was currently experiencing by the excessive damage of property.
The hooded figure turned around for a moment before throwing out several flasks in Merlin’s direction.
The flasks exploded upon impact with the roof, causing severe damage and a large plume of smoke.
“ASHEN, YOU BASTARD!” Merlin shouted as he barely dodged the brunt of the explosion, slipping on a shattered tile and falling towards the street before barely being caught by one of his vines.
This sudden stop of momentum had caused the figure Merlin called Ashen to gain more distance, but he suddenly stopped and threw more flasks to the street below him, towards several civilians who had yet to evacuate the street.
In his haste, Merlin threw a handful of throwing knives in the flask’s directions, causing them to explode mid-air.
An additional throwing knife had embedded itself in Ashen’s calf, causing the figure to lose their balance.
As prototypes from Tiny’s early blacksmithing experiments, the throwing knives lacked lethal precision.
However, Merlin kept a few on hand, finding them surprisingly useful for utility purposes.
Merlin used his vines to propel himself back onto the rooftop, each tendril acting as an extra limb as he leapt from one rooftop to the next, rapidly closing the gap with Ashen.
Then, with a sharp whistle from his enemy, Merlin’s vines were abruptly severed.
The faint chime of a bell was the last sound Merlin heard before he plummeted toward the next rooftop.
The rough landing knocked the wind out of him, and before he could regain his footing, he rolled off the roof, crashing onto the street below.
Merlin felt several of his bones break, a sharp pain coursed through his body, but that wasn’t the end of his suffering.
Ashen laughed at him from the rooftop before throwing more flasks.
Merlin caught the glimpse of a second person standing beside him, someone familiar…
“Bell?” He muttered before being encased in a firey explosion.
Merlin felt sharp fragments slice against the skin on his face, and only after he read the notification did he realise what happened.
「Your “Replica Ghostsaw Mask” has been destroyed.」 Fragments of his mask fell onto the street, along with a small pool of blood.
There was nothing he could do at this point, he was completely outmatched, and this frustrated him to no end.
When Merlin glanced back up towards the rooftop, both parties had vanished.
He observed his surroundings, people were staring at him through windows, and it was only a matter of time before authorities closed in on his position and attempted to apprehend him.
Merlin dashed away from the scene of the crime while covering his face the best he could, ducking into the sewer system before changing his clothing and drinking a potion.
He left the sewer system when the coast was clear, and approached the area where the new thieves guild had been.
The fancy building that they had just moved into was now a smouldering pile of rubble.
Burnt to the ground without warning, and raided by an army of guards.
“They sure got us good…” Merlin said under his breath, his exhaustion was evident.
He entered a safe place before logging out for the day.
The warning that a log-out was happening soon had appeared only twenty minutes ago, meaning he had more time to spend within the game.
Arthur avoided attending the wrap up briefing, claiming he wasn’t feeling well, this went unquestioned as his current appearance corroborated his story.
Thankfully Donovan was already waiting for him, but before he could ask why Arthur had come out so early, Arthur asked him to bring him to the lab.
