Vestigium was still as cold as ever when Lu Yin looked out from his floating coffin. "Ba Se, are you there?"
“I am always here.”
"Let’s talk privately."
"Say what you wish to say."
"I want to know about the civilization that can teleport."
Ba Se remained silent for a moment. "Have you encountered them?"
"Yes." Lu Yin did not bother trying to hide anything.
Ba Se replied, "I cannot tell you. You must first complete a mission."
Lu Yin’s eyes flickered. "Do I really need to complete a mission for this?"
"As I told you, knowledge comes at a cost."
"Fine, what level does this knowledge correspond to?"
"A three-star mission will do."
"So I need to destroy the Seal-Eater Civilization?"
"That is indeed the mission that you have already accepted, and that will work."
Lu Yin challenged, "You’re not saying this just to get me to destroy the Seal-Eater Civilization, are you?"
"Every mission has a corresponding reward."
Lu Yin exhaled. "I just want to learn about this one civilization. Do I really need to destroy one with five Immortals? Isn’t that too steep a cost?"
"It’s up to you whether you’re willing or not," Ba Se responded.
Lu Yin helplessly thought for a moment and then shouted, "Furball, are you here?"
No response.
"Old Man Hehe, are you here?"
Again, no response.
"Lan Meng, are you here?"
Still, there was no answer.
Lu Yin was speechless. They were completely ignoring him.
"Ba Se, are those guys around?"
"I cannot say."
Lu Yin’s eyes flashed. "I’ve met one of those strange birds, the kind that can teleport."
He had no choice. Since he was unable to glean any information from Ba Se, he needed to see if he could learn something from the other members of Obscura.
"So it happened to go to your place? Hahaha, how unlucky for you, human brat! You’re in trouble." A burst of laughter rang out.
Lu Yin sneered. "Furball, now you talk to me. What’s with playing dead earlier? Are you afraid to face me?"
"Hmph! So you’re still talking tough even when your death is imminent."
"Who can make me face death? That strange bird? Sorry, but I already drove it off."
There was another burst of laughter, but this time, it was unfamiliar to Lu Yin. This was someone whom he had not heard before.
"Brat, if you want to learn about those strange birds, you need to complete a three-star mission. We can’t just tell you, though we can give you some pointers. For example, those birds don’t understand the concept of retreat," Furball gleefully shared.
Old Man Hehe said, “Their teleportation often occurs at random. In the cognition of those strange birds, the concept of fearing the unknown does not exist. And for an innate gift like teleportation, there is no notion of retreat, because they can appear before you again at any moment.”
Lu Yin’s expression grew serious. This was true. When fighting against ordinary enemies, driving them off meant that they had retreated. If battle resumed, they would have to travel back first. However, that strange bird could appear at any moment. How could its disappearance be considered a retreat?
"One more thing: those birds hold grudges, deep grudges. If you hurt them, unless you find a way to prevent them from finding you again, they’ll stick to you like glue until they’ve either achieved their goal or killed you. There’s no third option. Haha, your human civilization is in trouble," Furball gloated.
Lu Yin’s eyes narrowed. "Are you saying that the strange bird is going to go after my civilization again?"
"Definitely."
"Furball, did you lead the strange bird to my people?" Lu Yin suddenly shouted fiercely.
Furball sneered.
A familiar voice suddenly spoke up. "So it’s you. I remember you now. We’ve met before."
Lu Yin was surprised. "Che?"
The voice was far too familiar. While they had not spoken at length, Che was etched deeply into Lu Yin’s memory.
Sure enough, Che had called out.
This was the same individual who had offered Lu Yin advice in the Consciousness Megaverse. He was the first Immortal that Lu Yin had met, aside from Master Qing Cao.
Che was also a member of Obscura, which Lu Yin had already known. Despite visiting Vestigium a few times, he had never encountered Che. For an Immortal, it was perfectly normal to not appear for thousands of years at a time. On the other hand, Furball and the old guy remained in Vestigium, which was clearly abnormal.
Lu Yin had never thought that Che might suddenly show up.
Che laughed. "You remember me?"
Lu Yin exhaled. "Of course, though it’s been a while."
"Not long, only about a thousand years. I didn’t expect you to join Obscura. Welcome."
"Che? Do you two know each other?" Furball asked.
Che replied, "We met once."
"And you didn’t kill him? Too bad," Furball lamented.
Lu Yin arched a brow. "Furball, would you like to visit my human civilization? I’ll be sure to give you a proper welcome."
"Human civilization? Hmph! Any civilization that those birds target is doomed. Your human civilization is already finished. There’s no need to pay a visit," Furball said mockingly.
The old voice spoke up again. “Brat, those strange birds are known as the Plume Immortals. They belong to the Plume Civilization.”
Lu Yin’s eyes flashed. Plume Immortals? The Immortal Lord…
"A defining characteristic of the Plume Immortals Civilization is that they kill Immortals. That means that your human civilization is an ideal hunting ground for them, due to your impressive number of Immortals. Carefully consider how you should deal with them when you return."
Lu Yin could not understand this. "Why would Immortals kill other Immortals? Aren’t they afraid of increasing their karmic chains?"
"If you want to know more, you’ll have to complete a three-star mission," the old creature replied.
Lu Yin’s mood soured further.
Che spoke, "Lu Yin, one of the reasons why you were allowed to join Obscura is because of your ability to teleport. Those strange birds are both your enemies, as well as creatures Obscura needs to eliminate. I hope that you can successfully deal with one that has appeared."
Lu Yin asked, "Is what Furball said true? Do those strange birds really hold grudges?"
"Furball?" Che was left puzzled.
"That’s me," Furball chimed in, only to quickly realize what they had said. "Pah! That’s not me!"
"So it’s you. Quite fitting," Che agreed.
Furball flew into a rage. "Because of those two words alone, I’m going to destroy your human civilization!"
"Sorry, but given your strength, it would be hard for you to destroy human civilization," Che said.
The old one chimed in, "Not all human civilizations, just this particular one. Strictly speaking, they’re a bit of abandoned bait."
Lu Yin arched a brow. Do they all know?
Furball sneered. "Exactly, they’re just bait. Who could’ve thought that the bait tossed out by human civilization would grow? Still, it doesn’t matter. Without the inheritance of the Nine Ramparts, this human civilization is nothing."
"Furball, my human civilization invites you to be our guest," Lu Yin interjected.
Furball sneered. "Let’s first see if you can deal with that strange bird."
Lu Yin pushed the lid off of the red coffin and stepped out of it, exhaling.
While he had failed to learn detailed information about the Plume Immortals Civilization, he had learned a few snippets. Unfortunately, it was all bad news.
He shared the information with Greater Sancte Green Lotus and the others, causing everyone’s moods to grow heavy.
They had no idea where the strange bird might be. They were unable to seize the initiative and strike. Even if they did, it would be useless since the bird could instantly disappear.
This bird was not the same as Luo Chan. Even if Blood Tower or Green Lotus went all out, they would struggle to immediately catch the bird. This was especially because teleportation was their innate ability; there was no question that they had developed other abilities to complement it. After all, their inheritance had been passed down for countless years.
This was the most troubling part.
For the time being, they could not find any solution. The only choice was to have Green Lotus continuously observe the Heavenly Karmic Macrocosm so that he could warn them if the strange bird reappeared.
Lu Yin rubbed his head. He had assumed that, after dealing with the Nest civilization and gaining the ability to teleport, he would not be bothered by the ability ever again. Unfortunately, that same feeling of being suppressed was back.
This time, it was even worse than dealing with Luo Chan; that strange bird was quite powerful.
While it did not resonate with two cosmic laws and was not equal to Old First, the bird held an advantage in how fast it could move.
Two years passed in the blink of an eye.
The strange bird did not appear during that time. For two years, Lu Yin occasionally tried to test Vestigium for further information, but the members of Obscura were far from foolish. They were all shrewd, and no matter how he probed, he failed to get any more useful information.
He especially spoke with Che. This member of Obscura was always very polite, and Lu Yin felt that it might be possible to learn something.
But Che bluntly declined, though he apologized several times. He shared nothing about the Plume Immortals Civilization, leaving Lu Yin helpless.
The one he wanted to speak to the most was Lan Meng. If Lu Yin knew where Lan Meng was, Greater Sancte Green Lotus and the others could catch it. Then, through Lan Meng, they might be able to gather further information regarding the Plume Immortals Civilization.
Lu Yin considered Lan Meng to be the least threatening of the Obscura members.
In the Nine Odysseys Megaverse, on a huge branch in the Mother Tree’s canopy, Lesser Sancte Dan Jin looked at a bit of colored glass in her hand. "Senior Kang Tian, this is less colored glass than before."
In the distance, a massive snail opened its eyes to stare at Dan Jin. "You’ve had me spit it out for so many years. How much longer must I continue?"
Dan Jin bowed. "That isn’t something I can decide. I’m only responsible for transporting it."
Kang Tian was an Immortal, and hearing this was upsetting to it. "I’ve always been an Immortal. I’ve helped you deal with Obscura, and this is how you now repay me? I don’t want to produce any more!"
Dan Jin helplessly replied, "Then I’ll inform Greater Sancte Green Lotus of your decision. Please wait a moment, Senior."
Kang Tian closed its eyes, indifferent. It had produced colored glass for so many years, and it was tired.
Suddenly, an indescribable sense of horror fell upon the snail. It instinctively released a spatial mire while releasing a surge of Lifeforce from its entire body. It had only taken an instant for a figure to appear behind it. Yue Lu had arrived.
Staring at Kang Tian, the bird flapped its wings and flicked a feather out. It was the same Godplume Spear that had injured Ku Deng.
The feather pierced the spatial mire and the Lifeforce. Neither had any effect on the attack, and the feather continued on until it penetrated the shell on Kang Tian’s back, cracking it open. The feather completely passed through the shell, exiting. Kang Tian felt the cold touch of death reach out for it.
It stared blankly at Yue Lu, unable to understand why its defenses had been completely ineffective.
Even when it had joined forces with others to surround and kill Hui, its spatial mire had worked.
At that moment, karma descended, and Lu Yin abruptly appeared, but both were still a step too late. Yue Lu had already vanished, leaving nothing more than a satisfied smile behind.
It had appeared for an instant just to release a single attack, nothing more.
Even so, Kang Tian was gravely wounded.
Lu Yin looked at the snail. Its massive form shrank. With the hole through its shell, Kang Tian looked absolutely miserable.
Dan Jin saw everything, from beginning to end. She had seen the strange bird appear, release a single strike, and then vanish. It had all happened in the blink of an eye, and yet that single moment had been enough to badly injure an Immortal.
That strange bird’s existence cast a shadow over Dan Jin.
No, more accurately, it cast a shadow over the entire human civilization.
The strange bird was completely gone.
Green Lotus searched through karma, but he could find nothing. It was frustrating.
Lu Yin clenched his fists. Why had the defenses of an Immortal like Kang Tian not stopped any part of the attack?
Like Master Ku Deng, Kang Tian could not put it into words, yet it could clearly sense a disturbance in the way the cosmos’ laws aligned.
